Hospital told to pay Rs.20 lakh to sanitation worker’s kin

A hospital here was Friday ordered to pay Rs.20 lakh to the family of a sanitation worker who died while cleaning a manhole opposite the hospital.

The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) ordered the ESI Hospital Noida to pay Rs.20 lakh to the family of Babloo, who died Feb 24.

According to police, Babloo was ordered to enter the manhole of the sewer line where he fell unconscious due to the presence of methane gas.

Kirori Mal College building under Delhi HC scanner

The Delhi High Court Friday asked Kirori Mal College to apprise it on the condition of its building while hearing a plea filed by a student who fell from a hostel balcony.

Justice Sunil Gaur asked the college management to inform the court as to when the building was built, and its condition and maintenance.

A college student had filed a police complaint March 29, 2013, against the college after he fell from the balcony of a hostel building and was injured.

AP CID seeks ban on the website of Playwin online lottery

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Andhra Pradesh police today sought a ban on the website of ‘Playwin’ which has allegedly been selling online lotteries banned in the state.

CID Additional Director General of Police T Krishna Prasad said that Sikkim government and its marketing agent (Essel Group Lottery Company) organise online lotteries in the lottery free zone states including Andhra Pradesh and the Essel Group Lottery Company sells online lotteries through their website.

Pietersen hits out at Prior

Kevin Pietersen blasted his ex-team mate Matt Prior for saying that the England dressing room was a better place without the former England captain.

Pietersen took to Twitter to say that Test vice-captain Prior should focus on his own form since he was under pressure to retain his place in the Test side from ODI keeper Jos Butler after a disastrous Ashes.

“Fewer Q&A’s, more Sussex nets methinks, @MattPrior! #josbuttler,” Pietersen tweeted.

Mild quake hits northeast India

A low intensity quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale shook India’s northeastern states Friday evening, officials said.

“The quake occurred at 6.41 p.m. There has been no report of casualties or damage to property so far,” an official of the state disaster management centre told IANS.

The official said the epicentre was in northwestern Tripura along the India-Bangladesh border.

The tremor was also felt in southern Assam and parts of Bangladesh.

Friday’s earthquake was the third in the past six days in northeast India.

A deserted housewife of Nellore district here on Friday attempted suicide by consuming rat poison before the office of the Human Rights Commission.
The housewife, Mastanamma, who was rushed to Osmania General Hospital, belongs to Nellore district. She was married to one Shiva last year. However, her husband married another woman some ten days back and deserted her.

Six girls fall from roof, die

At least six girls died Friday after falling from the roof of a house in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, police said.

The accident took place when the girls were playing in Tunkuppi village, about 100 km from here. The government announced a compensation of Rs.1.5 lakh to the kin of the victims.

30% class III kids have problems with multiplication: Survey

Sixty-six per cent of Class III students in the country are able to answer mathematics questions correctly but 30 per cent still have problems handling simple multiplication, a survey released today said.

It also found that 64 per cent of the children were able to answer language questions correctly. Seventy per cent of the kids were able to handle simple multiplication and 84 per cent of the students data relevant to their context.

Explain use of substandard material: SC to Railways

The Supreme Court Friday sought responses from the central government and the Indian Railways on the use of substandard material in the coach interiors that released toxic fumes thus causing the death of passengers due to asphyxiation during incidents of fire.

The bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi issued notice on a plea by petitioner advocate Abhay Singh seeking direction to the government to ban the use of substandard and inferior material in cushions, cushion covers, curtains, flooring and wood partitions.

CRPF should be equipped with modern weaponry: President

President Pranab Mukherjee Friday said the CRPF should be equipped with modern weaponry to boost its confidence.

Mukherjee called the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) a “pan-India force” which has taken “pioneering steps towards modernisation and enhanced combativeness”.

“But more needs to be done. Ground level tactics have to be made more innovative by the adoption of state-of-art planning strategies,” Mukherjee said at a function to mark the diamond jubilee year of the CRPF.

N.D. Tiwari’s mediation plea dismissed in paternity suit

The Delhi High Court Friday dismissed a plea by veteran Congress leader N.D. Tiwari seeking mediation in a paternity suit filed by a man for Tiwari to be declared his biological father.

Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw dismissed Tiwari’s plea after 32-year-old Rohit Shekhar, who claims that the 90-year-old Tiwari is his biological father, and his mother Ujjwala Sharma refused to mediate saying they would contest the case.

Taking note of the contentions, the court fixed the case for final hearing April 21.

BJP to sneak in casino policy in Goa budget session: Congress

The BJP will use the short five-day Goa assembly budget session to sneak in the casino policy that allows for transfer of casino licence, state Congress president John Fernandes said Friday.

Fernandes said the transfer of casino licence clause was being slipped in the proposed casino policy to facilitate the sale of an existing casino licence to a mega corporate entity.

Two brothers shot dead in road rage

Two brothers were shot dead Friday by three people following a scuffle over a minor issue of overtaking a vehicle here, police said.

Sahab Singh, 40, and Kaptan Singh, 35, were shot dead when the vehicle they were travelling in was reportedly stopped near their house at Bawana area by a man in a car at 10.30 a.m.

The man was furious as one of the victims did not allow him to overtake their car.

AAP questions health secretary’s transfer

The AAP Friday alleged that former health secretary Keshav Desiraju was transferred because he opposed the return of Ketan Desai into the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Desai, a former MCI chief, was arrested on charges of bribery in 2010.

Desiraju “was unfairly and arbitrarily transferred” by Health and Family Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as he (Desiraju) was against the return of Desai to the helm of the MCI, the AAP said in a statement.

Opposition represents minority: Ousted Ukraine president

Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych emerged Friday in a border town of Russia after hiding for a week, saying the opposition represents a minority of the population.

Yanukovych, accompanied by several bodyguards, arrived at an exhibition centre in Rostov-on-Don around 5:09 p.m. in his first public appearance since he was sacked by opposition-held Ukrainian parliament Saturday, Xinhua reported.

He said power in Ukraine has been seized by nationalists “who represent absolutely minority of the population”.

TRS decision on merger with Congress March 3

TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao said his party will decide March 3 whether or not to merge his party with the Congress.

He told reporters here Friday that he alone can’t take a decision on the issue.

Jagga Reddy plans massive bike rally from Sangareddy

Petrol, diesel prices hiked

Petrol price was raised Friday by 60 paise a litre, minus taxes, while the diesel rate was hiked by 50 paise per litre. The revised prices will take effect from midnight, it was announced.

Diesel prices were last increased by 50 paise per litre on Jan 31, while petrol price was kept unchanged.

Allowing for local taxes, the price of petrol per litre will be Rs.73.16 in Delhi, Rs.80.96 in Kolkata, Rs.82.07 in Mumbai and Rs.76.48 in Chennai, while that of diesel per litre for the four metros, respectively, will be Rs.55.48, Rs.60.09, Rs.63.86 and Rs.59.17.

Chinese defence minister meets Sharif

Chinese Defence Minister Chang Wanquan Friday met Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Asif Sandila here to discuss military cooperation between the two countries.

The prime minister expressed his continuation of support for the One China policy and said friendship with China was a significant element of Pakistan’s foreign policy, reported Dawn online.

Chang assured Sharif of continuation of China’s cooperation with Pakistan in the field of military and defence.

51,000 hospitals set up, upgraded in 10 years: Azad

The government has set up and upgraded 51,000 hospitals in the country during the last 10 years, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Friday.

The hospitals came up at the district, sub-district, community and primary health centre levels, Azad said here while announcing the upgradation of the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi.

Azad said the centre has allocated Rs.1.5 billion for the project.

He added that the government has allocated Rs.152.99 billion to Uttar Pradesh in the last nine years under the National Rural Health Mission.

Three women Maoists with rewards on their heads nabbed

In a major blow to the Odisha Maobadi Party (OMP) led by Sabyasachi Panda, three women ultras carrying cash rewards on their heads have been arrested and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition seized in Gajapti district.

The three were arrested during a raid on an OMP camp at Mukhi jungle near Dimbiri Pankal village under Mohona police station limits last night based on intelligence reports, DIG (Southern Range) Amitabh Thakur said today after producing them before the media.
