Calling obesity a disease increases weight gain in overweight people

A new study has warned that terming obesity as an illness or a disease makes overweight people less alarmed about their health because they think that they have no control over their weight.

For the study, University of Minnesota researchers asked over 700 people to read one of three articles, News.com.au reported.

While one article was from the New York Times regarding the move to categorize obesity as a disease, the second article focused on tips for managing weight and the third one urged that obesity is not a disease.

Third-hand smoke just as lethal as first-hand smoke

A scientist at the University of California, Riverside suggests that second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke are just as deadly as first-hand smoke.

While first-hand smoke refers to the smoke inhaled by a smoker and second-hand smoke to the exhaled smoke and other substances emanating from the burning cigarette that can get inhaled by others, third-hand smoke is the second-hand smoke that gets left on the surfaces of objects, ages over time and becomes progressively more toxic.

Testosterone therapy ups heart attack risk in men under 65

A new study has revealed that men under the age of 65, who have a history of heart disease, are at a higher risk of a heart attack shortly after beginning testosterone therapy.

The joint study, conducted by UCLA, the National Institutes of Health and Consolidated Research Inc., found that there is a two-fold increase in the risk of a heart attack, confirming earlier studies which claimed the same.

The research was prompted by three small earlier studies that had raised concerns about possible adverse cardiovascular outcomes associated with testosterone therapy.

Salman says that he is not averse to doing remakes

Salman Khan today dismissed reports that he was averse to acting in remakes after his recent movie “Jai Ho”, which is the remake of Chiranjeevi-starrer Telugu film “Stalin”, failed at the box office.

“I will do remakes. Who said I won’t do them? I never said that I won’t do remakes. Mumbai Police Commissioner quits; may contest polls

Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has resigned from service amidst reports that he was keen on contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

The 1980-batch IPS officer yesterday submitted his resignation letter to the Maharashtra Home Ministry, which forwarded it to the Chief Minister’s Office for acceptance, police sources said today.

Singh, who was due to retire next year, is reportedly considering contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls either from Mumbai or Uttar Pradesh, his native state.

Addressing the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) national executive committee meet here, Kejriwal said: “I have made a list of corrupt people. This is just the beginning and the list will grow. I am presenting the list in front of you, and you decide whether these people should be voted or not.”

Woman put on fire

A day after a 23-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by a gang at Railway quarters, police suspect that one of the accused, Ishaq, develop resentment against the victim as she had lodged a police complaint against him two months back for cheating.

According to a police officer, “The accused had allegedly cheated the victim promising to marry her a year ago. When she lodged a complaint with Chilkalguda police against him, he planned to take revenge,”. The victim is at present undergoing treatment at Gandhi hospital.

Woman, son die of suffocation

A woman and her four-year-old son died of suffocation in a factory fire here early Friday, an official said.

The fire broke out on the ground and first floor of a garment factory in east Delhi at 5 a.m.

“Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes but the smoke was very dense,” said a fire official. Another worker Sharar, 26, suffered injuries.

Telangana: Will protect my state at any cost: Kiran Kumar

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday asked the central government to respect the will of the people of the state, which he claimed, is reflected in the resolution passed in the legislature rejecting the state reorganization bill.

The chief minister said resolutions passed in assembly and council indicated that people of Andhra Pradesh stand for a united state.

The resolutions passed by voice vote in both the houses request the president not to forward Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2013 to Parliament.

One injured in Florida college shooting

At least one student was reportedly critically injured during a shooting incident in the campus of a college in the US state of Florida, Xinhua reported citing college authorities on Thursday.

Police detained two people for investigation, but their names were not being released.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot on campus, the Eastern Florida Sate College said on its Twitter account.

“The Palm Bay campus, one of the college’s four campuses, was locked down and people are asked to stay inside with doors locked.”

Man jumps before Delhi Metro train, dies

A man died Friday after he jumped in front of a Delhi Metro train, an official said.

“The man jumped in front of the Metro at 9.42 am and was immediately sent to hospital,” a Metro official told IANS.

The incident took place at the Tilak Nagar Metro station due to which train services between Dwarka and Noida and Vaishali in Uttar Pradesh were disrupted.

“We were stuck at the Tilak Nagar station for almost half an hour,” Monica Chettri, who was travelling to Noida, told IANS.

The Metro official said services have been restored.

Protestors block roads in Assam over land dispute killing

Protesters on Thursday said that they will continue to block roads connecting Assam with Arunachal Pradesh till the latter hands over miscreants involved in a violence that claimed 10 lives.

Ten people were killed and 12 others injured after a dispute over eviction from encroached land in Sonitpur.

US to seek death penalty for Boston bomber

US federal prosecutors will seek death penalty against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the man accused of killing three people and injuring over 200 with homemade bombs at the Boston Marathon last year.

“After consideration of the relevant facts, the applicable regulations and the submissions made by the defendant’s counsel, I have determined that the United States will seek the death penalty in this matter,” Xinhua quoted Attorney General Eric Holder saying in a statement.
