Rayalaseema delegation meets President over Krishna award

A delegation of elected representatives, including a Minister, from Rayalaseema met President Pranab Mukherjee in Hyderabad and sought his intervention in scrapping the award of the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal on the Krishna river waters dispute.

The delegation, which also had representatives from social groups, claimed the final award, given last month, was against the interests of Andhra Pradesh.

Iran says ‘good progress’ in nuclear talks

Iran’s chief negotiator today said talks in Geneva with world powers late into the night on implementing a landmark nuclear deal had made “good progress,” according to state TV.

“The negotiations continued until 4:30 am (0330 GMT) in Geneva and the two sides have made good progress on different issues, but we cannot prejudge the results before the end of the negotiations,” lead negotiator Abbas Araqchi said.

He added that there would “probably be another round of negotiations before noon and before announcing the results.”

New Indian Ambassador arrives in Abu Dhabi

The new Indian Ambassador to the UAE has arrived in Abu Dhabi to assume charge.

T P Seetharam, nominated as the Indian Ambassador to the UAE by the government of India last month, is expected to present his credentials to President of the UAE Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan soon.

Kerala-born Seetharam, 57, has served as Indian High Commissioner to Mauritius from September 2011 to November 2013.

Kallis a true champion, says Tendulkar

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar lauded Jacques Kallis Tuesday as one of the greatest all-rounders of the game and said the South African was “a true champion”.

Kallis called time on his illustrious 18-year Test career Monday, helping his side achieve a 10-wicket victory over India in the second and final Test at Durban to clinch the series 1-0.

Gavaskar says BCCI not to change DRS stance despite Kohli’s controversial dismissal

Indian batting legend and commentator Sunil Gavaskar said that the Indian cricket board would not change their controversial view on the non-use of the Decision Review System (DRS) despite lynchpin batsman Virat Kohli being given out caught behind to the first ball of the final day at Kingsmead on Monday.

11-year old girl goes on fast for prohibition

A 11-year old girl caused a flutter today when she launched an indefinite fast here demanding implementation of total prohibition in Tamil Nadu but gave up the protest after being persuaded by police.

Jothima, studying fourth standard, along with her father commenced the fast this morning at the District Collectorate.

Police persuaded both of them to withdraw the fast and disperse.

Masked criminals loot gold packets and cash from bank

A group of masked criminals allegedly looted 688 packets of gold jewellery worth Rs 5 crore and Rs 12,800 cash from the Odisha Gramya Bank’s Darpanarayanpur branch in Nayagarh district, police said.

The manager and cashier of the bank were injured in the incident, sources said.

The masked assailants, four in number, held the bank employees hostage and decamped with the packets at gunpoint, police said, adding a search is on to nab the criminals.

Tenant farmer commits suicide after suffering crop losses

A 40-year-old tenant farmer, grief-stricken after loss of his cotton crop, committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Krishna district.

M Lakshmaiah, a native of Gandepalli village of Kanchikacherla Mandal area, had taken two acres of land on lease for cotton farming. He suffered huge losses for two years due to failure of the crop, the police said today.

This year, the crop raised on the leased land was hit by incessant rains due to which he was unable to clear off his debts, the police said.

Yesterday evening, he committed suicide by consuming pesticide in his field.

Two kids beheaded in Central African Republic: Unicef

Two children were beheaded in the Central African Republic’s (CAR) capital as violence touched a “vicious new low”, the UN has said.

About 16 children had been killed in Bangui since Dec 5 and an increasing number of them are being recruited into armed groups, BBC reported citing the UN.

There were “unprecedented levels” of violence against children, the UN children’s agency, Unicef, said in a statement. One of the children who had been beheaded had also been mutilated, while another 60 had been injured in fighting since Dec 5.

China to improve rural schools

China has plans to improve schools in rural areas over in about five years, the education ministry has announced.

The programme will mainly cover schools in west and central China, with the addition of a few poor areas in the east, reported Xinhua citing a ministry statement.

The government will invest in school facilities including classrooms, dormitories, playgrounds, canteens, toilets and drinking water supply, as well as providing them with adequate teaching equipment, the statement said.

Frost damages crops in Chinese province

Freezing weather, snow and frost have damaged 670,000 hectares of crops in China’s Yunnan province, authorities said Tuesday.

The weather also damaged tropical and subtropical cash crops such as coffee and rubber, flowers and vegetables, reported Xinhua citing the provincial agricultural department in a statement.

The freezing weather and frost have inflicted a direct economic loss of 11.8 billion yuan ($1.9 billion) to the agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry and fishing industries, it added.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hails purge of uncle

In a first public reference to his uncle’s recent execution, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has spoken of the “elimination of factionalist filth” .

In a new year message broadcast on state TV, Kim said “resolute action” had strengthened the country’s unity, BBC reported Wednesday.

Last month North Korea announced it had executed Chang Song-thaek for “acts of treachery”.

Mohamed Morsi’s spokesperson held in Egypt

The Egyptian authorities have arrested ousted president Mohamed Morsi’s former spokesperson Yasser Ali, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim told media Tuesday.

Ali, who has also been a Muslim Brotherhood leader, “referred to Dokki police station in Giza”, Xinhua reported citing the minister.

Since Morsi’s removal by the military in early July, hundreds of Brotherhood members, including top leader Mohamed Badie, and thousands of their affiliates have been arrested over various charges.

Iran condemns bomb attacks in Russia

Iran has condemned the recent deadly bombings in Russia’s Volgograd city which killed at least 32 and left 28 injured, Xinhua reported.

Iranian Foreign Ministry’ spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham also extended Tehran’s condolence to the Russian government and nation over the terrorist bombings.

On Sunday, a suicide bomber ripped a railway station in Volgograd, killing 17 people and injuring 45. Another bomb went off Monday morning in a trolley bus in the same city, leaving at least 15 dead and 28 wounded.

The blasts have drawn widespread international condemnation.

Displacement on rise in CAR: UN

A new wave of displacement was triggered by insecurity in Central African Republic (CAR) during the past weeks, as the crisis in the impoverished country remains severe, a UN spokesperson said Tuesday.

“There has been a 70 percent increase in the number of people displaced in Bangui, from 214,000 on Dec. 17 to 370,000 today,” Martin Nesirky said at a regular news briefing at the UN headquarters, adding that a total of 785,000 people have been displaced across the country and some 2.2 million people are in need of assistance.

UN appoints Swiss as top relief official for Somalia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Philippe Lazzarini of Switzerland as his deputy special representative as well as resident and humanitarian coordinator in Somalia.

Lazzarini has extensive experience in humanitarian assistance and international coordination in conflict and post-conflict areas, including in Somalia where he has been the resident and humanitarian coordinator and UN Development Program (UNDP) resident representative since March, reported Xinhua citing Ban in a statement Tuesday.

Moretz joins ‘If I Stay’ cast

Teen actor Chloe Grace Moretz has landed a role in upcoming movie “If I Stay” and she will reportedly earn a seven-figure sum for her role.

The 16-year-old will essay a teen musician in the movie, based on Gayle Forman’s novel of the same name.

Since Moretz is a minor, producers had to file legal documents with the court asking for permission to hire her. The documents also reveal that she will make $500,000 as a base salary, reports tmz.com.
