Private plane lands on highway in MP; DGCA orders probe

A four-seater private aircraft with only the pilot on board made an emergency landing on a highway in Madhya Pradesh in rough weather today prompting aviation regulator DGCA to launch a probe.

The pilot was unharmed as the spectacle of the small aircraft touching down the highway in the morning hours brought traffic to a halt while leaving motorists startled.

“The Mumbai unit of the DGCA has started its probe into the incident. It has also written to the Baitul district magistrate on the issue,” DGCA sources told PTI here tonight.

President, PM greet nation on New Year’s Eve

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday greeted the nation on New Year’s Eve.

India set to attend Geneva II talks on Syria

India, which has always pressed for dialogue to solve the Syrian crisis, is all set to attend the Jan 22 Geneva II peace conference, said a government official Tuesday.

Around 30 nations are going to attend the conference in the city of Montreux, Switzerland.

While a formal invite is yet to be issued, India has been informed “fairly authentically” it would be among the countries to be invited, said external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin at a briefing here.

Man gets life term for murdering mother-in-law

A local court has sentenced a 40-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his mother-in-law in 2012.

Additional Sessions court judge V N Tambi in his verdict delivered yesterday held Shaikh Ahmad guilty of murdering Sairabi (55) at her village Pailpada in the district on July 31, 2012.

The court also handed down rigorous imprisonment of two years to Shaikh under section 201 of IPC for destroying evidence. Both the sentences will run concurrently.

Work in progress on coastal surveillance network: Antony

Defence Minister AK Antony today said that a coastal surveillance network was being established with 46 stations as part of it to ensure real-time coastline monitoring.

Pakistan condemns bomb attacks in Russia

Pakistan has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Russia’s Volgograd city which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

Replying to a question regarding the terrorist attack in the Russian federation, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson said that Islamabad opposes terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

“We strongly condemn the terrorist attack at the train station of Volgograd which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries,” the official said while extending condolences to the families of the victims.

Kejriwal hijacked Anna’s movement to become CM: Ramdev

Criticising Arvind Kejriwal for taking support from Congress to form government in Delhi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev today alleged that the AAP convener became the Chief Minister of Delhi by “hijacking Anna Hazare’s movement”.

“Kejriwal has got his desired (CM’s) post. He has achieved this position by hijacking Anna Hazare’s movement. He used Anna’s anti-corruption movement to reach there,” the yoga guru told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by Bhartiya Swabhiman Trust here.

Man kills wife by slitting her throat

A man allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat with a knife in Sector-82 here, police said today.

According to police, Grandeur Apartment resident Ajay Grover killed his 48-year-old wife Anju Grover last night when their two daughters were sleeping in the adjoining room.

After killing his wife Ajay went to their daughter’s room around 1 am and said he’s going. They did not understand as they were in deep sleep. The daughters discovered the body of their mother in the morning, police said.

Gas poisoning kills nine in China

Suspected gas poisoning claimed nine lives in a Chinese village Tuesday, authorities said.

Eight bodies were found in Guizhou province in a house of a villager named Zhang Zelong, Xinhua quoted an official with the government of Weining County, Bijie City as saying.

Police suspected a liquified gas leakage caused the death.

China hails Israel’s release of Palestinian prisoners

China has welcomed the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

But it also urged Jerusalem to stop settlements and work with Palestine to establish a proper atmosphere for peace talks.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made these remarks at a regular press briefing when asked to comment on Israel’s Tuesday release of Palestinian prisoners and its new plan to construct houses in the West Bank settlement, Xinhua reported.

US hails Chinese Uighurs’ release from Guantanamo

The US has hailed the release of last three Chinese Muslim Uighurs from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay as a “significant milestone”, BBC reported.

They were flown to the Slovakian capital Bratislava, where the US said they were “voluntarily resettling”. The Slovakian interior ministry said none of them were terror suspects.

Since 2001 the prison on Cuban soil has housed suspects detained by US forces during operations against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Syrian government evacuates 5,000 civilians: Red Cross

Syrian authorities have evacuated 5,000 civilians from the besieged town in north-east of Damascus, the international Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Syrian authorities have facilitated approximately 5,000 civilians to leave Adra, where the Al Qaeda-linked groups killed state servants and people from different minority groups which largely support President Bashar al-Assad’s administration, Xinhua reported.

AAP simplifies VAT filing system

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government today decided to simplify filing of the Value Added Tax (VAT) by the traders which has been a long standing demand by various traders’ associations of the city.

This was decided at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal here.

Talking to reporters Kejriwal said, “The Cabinet has decided to simplify filing of the VAT by the traders as demanded by them.”

Various traders’ association have been demanding the simplification of the VAT system.

Utah appeals gay marriage ruling to top US court

Utah appealed to the US Supreme Court to suspend a judge’s ruling allowing same-sex marriage in the western state, prosecutors said.

Its attorney general’s office filed an emergency request to stay a decision by judge Robert J. Shelby of Utah’s Federal District Court yesterday, who said the state’s law conflicts with the US constitution.

“Applicants respectfully apply for an immediate stay pending an appeal of a judgement and injunction … invalidating .. Utah’s marriage laws,” said the 101-page legal document, posted on the attorney general’s website.

Abbas threatens legal, diplomatic action against Israel

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas today threatened diplomatic and legal action against the “cancer” of Israeli settlement building, a day before US Secretary of State John Kerry visits.

“We will not remain patient as the settlement cancer spreads, especially in (east) Jerusalem, and we will use our right as a UN observer state by taking political, diplomatic and legal action to stop it,” he said during a speech in Ramallah to mark the 49th anniversary of the founding of the Fatah party.

Hamas rejects Egypt branding of Brotherhood as ‘terrorist’

Gaza’s Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya rejected Egypt’s branding of the Muslim Brotherhood a “terrorist” organisation, saying his Islamist movement would not abandon its links with the Brotherhood.

“No one can push Hamas to reject its ideology or its history,” he told a news conference yesterday, stressing he “rejects the description of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists”.

“We don’t expect a country like Egypt, which is a safe place for the Palestinian people and resistance, to abandon its (principles) and rank Hamas as a terrorist organisation,” he said.

Syria misses deadline to remove chemical weapons

Syria will miss a December 31 deadline for the removal of part of its chemical weapons arsenal for destruction, but international inspectors insisted the overall mission is still on track.

The delay came as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 130,000 people had been killed since the conflict began in March 2011, with the overwhelming majority caused by conventional arms.

The prospects for a peace conference slated for next month appeared to dim further, with Syrian media reporting the delivery of invitations to the meeting had been delayed.

Andhra Pradesh CM makes minor changes in ministers’ portfolios

In a minor change of portfolios of his ministers, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy handed over the charge of Legislative Affairs to S Sailajanath.

The move is politically significant since Legislative Affairs has hitherto been handled by D Sridhar Babu who belongs to the Telangana region, while Sailajanath is a vocal supporter of a “united” Andhra Pradesh.

Sridhar Babu has also been given additional charge of commercial taxes.

NIA not sharing information: Ranchi police

The NIA, which has detained persons from here in connection with the blasts in Patna and Bodh Gaya, has been accused of not sharing information about the same with the Ranchi police.

The NIA has refused to divulge information about the persons they had detained from Ranchi for interrogation in connection with the two blasts, a senior IPS officer said on condition of anonymity.

Unless the NIA arrests the suspects, no information is divulged about the persons detained, he said, adding that the agency is not sharing any information about the blasts case also.

Fire on cargo ship in Mumbai

A fire broke out on a Korean cargo ship anchored at the Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) here tonight, Naval sources said.

As per initial information available, nobody has been injured in the mishap.

Naval sources said the blaze started at around 9 pm but was put out within 30 minutes by six fire engines that were rushed to the spot which comes under Yellow Gate police station limits.

According to sources, the area where the ship ‘Soorong Song’ is docked at is not defence area.

Meanwhile, civic officials have informed that the fire started in the transformer of the ship.
