Scientists identify and classify more than half a million galaxies

Researchers have identified and classified more than half a million galaxies, after seven years of close observation of the universe from the Observatory of Calar Alto (CAHA, Almeria) and a technique that is able to break the stars’ energy in their colors through astronomical filters.

In addition, this research has also allowed calculating the distances from these galaxies to us with unprecedented accuracy.

1984 anti-Sikh riots case: SC rejects Sajjan Kumar’s plea

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a plea for bail and relief made by Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The apex court dismissed Kumar”s petition to drop murder charges against him. It asked Kumar to face trial in a murder in Sultanpuri in Delhi, during the riots that followed the October 31, 1984 assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Kumar has been accused of murder, rioting and promoting hatred between communities which allegedly led to the deaths of six people in Sultanpuri.

We are committed to form Telangana: Manmohan singh

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Tuesday reiterated that his government was committed to the formation of Telangana.

Speaking to media persons after participating in all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the Prime Minister said that the process of law for creation of Telangana State. “We are committed to formation of Telangana,” he said. He also appealed to the political parties to cooperate in smooth functioning of the Parliament and make best use of time during Parliament’s short winter session.

CM doubles pension for disabled persons

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday announced enhancement of pension from Rs.500 to 1,000 to totally 100 per cent disabled persons in the State from January 2014 and Antyodaya Anna Yojana Cards to all eligible disabled.

Bangalore blasts accused Madani shifted to private hospital

Complying with the Supreme Court directive, Karnataka government today shifted jailed Kerala-based PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, a key accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case, to a private hospital here for treatment.

The apex court on November 18 directed the Karnataka government to shift Madani to Manipal Hospital, subject to the hospital agreeing to take him as a patient for treatment.

PM urges politicos to make best use of Winter Session

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday appealed to all political parties to make the best and optimal use of the limited time available to the two Houses in the Winter Session of the Parliament.

He further said that all urgent financial business would be transacted on a priority basis.

“On behalf of the Government, we will do everything in our power to ensure that both the Houses run smoothly and in this matter, we seek the cooperation of all segments of the two houses,” he told media here today.

Neglected babies likelier to develop ‘dangerous’ indiscriminate friendliness

Researchers have found that children who do not receive enough love from their mothers during early stages of life are more likely to develop a behavior called “indiscriminate friendliness”.

Scientists believe that the behaviour, which is characterized by an inappropriate willingness to approach adults, including strangers, is rooted in brain adaptations associated with early-life experiences.

Hong Kong confirms H7N9 bird flu’s first human case

Hong Kong has confirmed the city’s first human case of H7N9 bird flu. According to China Daily, Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man said that an Indonesian man was hospitalized in critical condition after he came in contact with poultry on his way to Shenzhen.

Wing-man added that all the family members of the 36-year-old patient have been sent to the hospital for check up and among them four people are already showing signs of the disease. (ANI)

Recipe: Masaledar chai

Ingredients:

1 cup water
½ tsp tea powder
A pinch of cardamom powder
2 tsp sugar
1-2 tablespoon milk
¾ tsp chopped/crushed ginger
A small piece of daal cheeni
½ tsp saunf powder

Procedure:

Heat some water in a vessel and add sugar. Once the sugar melts, add the tea powder, crushed ginger, cardamom and saunf powder and daal cheeni.
Once this mixture comes to a boil, add milk.
Masala chai is ready.

College girl run over

A college girl was run over and killed by a truck here on her way back home today.

Police said the incident occured at Beltala area on Uluberia-Amta road and the girl died on the spot.

The driver and the cleaner of the truck were arrested in connection with the incident, the police added.

Don’t show ‘Dhoom 3’ illegally: Delhi court

The Delhi High Court Monday asked cable operators and internet service providers not to illegally show upcoming Bollywood movie `Dhoom 3`.

Justice M.L. Mehta also asked various internet operators to block within 48 hours the sites which illegally show the movie after they received a written complaint from the production house.

The court`s order came on a plea filed by Yash Raj Films, the producer of the film, seeking a restraint order against various internet service providers and cable operators on showing the film illegally.

Indian, German experts to discuss laser, nano technology

Experts from India and Germany will take part in a scientific conference here later this week to discuss global advancements in laser technology and new generation nano materials.

The conference is being organised by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft or DFG) in collaboration with the Srinivasa Ramanujam Institute for Basic Sciences under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), the Goethe Zentrum and the Humboldt Club, Thiruvananthapuram.

Now, camera that takes 3D photos in complete darkness

A new has been developed that can create 3D-images in almost pitch-black conditions.

The researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which developed the camera, captured images of objects, using just single particles of light, known as photons.

According to the BBC, the team of researchers said the technology could be used to help soldiers on combat operations.

Ahmed Kirmani, who wrote the paper, said the research has been called ‘counter-intuitive’ as normally the number of photons detected would tell you how bright an image was.

ISRO’s GSLV D5 launch likely early next month

ISRO today announced that the launch of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV D5, which was called off at the 11th hour on August 19 due to a fuel leak in its second stage, is likely in the first week of January next year.

“After carrying out all preparatory works, the launch of GSLV D5 is likely by the first week of January next year. The exact date and time is yet to be fixed,” said ISRO sources.

The integration of the second stage of GSLV D5 has already been completed and integration of the cryogenic stage is planned on December 9, they said.

Daying Sanctuary bans entry within premises

Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary authorities in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh have prohibited entry sans permission within its premises.

The move followed recent ‘Salt Lick’ ambush laid by hunters, killing of a bird and disappearance of two camera trappings from the sanctuary, official sources informed here today.

There had been restriction of hunting and poaching to some extent in the sanctuary in past two years.

A war of words has broken out between three big names of Pakistan cricket with veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi describing former stars, Muhammad Yousuf and Shoaib Akhtar as “heckle and jeckle”.

The dispute broke out after Yousuf and Akhtar made critical comments about Afridi`s performance in Pakistan`s recent ODI series against South Africa on recent television talk shows.

Yousuf and Akhtar were particularly critical about Afridi but when the former captain returned home yesterday from South Africa, he minced no words in lashing out at his two former teammates.

Dhoni fends off CSA, BCCI spat with `just here to play cricket` argument

Captain MS Dhoni has said that the Indian cricket team has distanced itself from the administrative issues between Cricket SA (CSA) and the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India.

According to Sport24, CSA and the BCCI clashed on the scheduling of the tour, which was reduced to three One Day Internationals and two Test matches with the traditional new year`s Test in Cape Town scrapped altogether.

Dhoni said jokingly that a match could be arranged for the administrators so that they can go at each other, adding that they are busy playing cricket and had nothing to do with it.

Mamata launches booklet detailing speedy public service

In a bid to strengthen public service delivery mechanism in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday launched the ‘Somayer Sathi’ service booklet that states the stipulated period within which a service has to be made available to citizens.

Launched under the West Bengal Right to Public Services Act, 2013, the booklet unveiled in English would be available in Bengali subsequently.

L&T Construction gets Rs 1,471-cr order

L&T construction on Tuesday said it has secured various orders aggregating to Rs 1,471 crore since November with the majority coming from the power transmission and distribution segment.

L&T Construction, a brand of engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro (L&T), said new orders worth Rs 461 crore were secured by building and factories business, Rs 142 crore by water and renewable segment and the rest Rs 182 crore by heavy civil infrastructure business.

12 FDI proposals worth Rs 822 cr cleared: Govt

Government Monday said it has cleared 12 foreign investment proposals, including that of Swedish fashion major Hennes & Mauritz, totalling Rs 821.63 crore.

“Based on the recommendations of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in its meeting held on November 13, 2013, the Government of India has approved twelve (12) proposals of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) amounting to Rs 821.63 crore,” Finance Ministry said in a statement.

Vodafone’s proposal to increase its shareholding in its Indian arm to 100 percent from the current 64.38 percent was withdrawn from the agenda, it added.
