Zawahri vows al Qaeda to free Guantanamo inmates

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri slammed US treatment of hunger striking inmates at Guantanamo Bay and said the group would spare no effort to free them, according to an audio recording posted on the Internet on Wednesday.

Zawahri also said Shi’ite Hezbollah’s intervention in the conflict in Syria was an attempt to promote Iranian hegemony over the country.

“The (hunger) strike by our brothers at Guantanamo unmasks the true ugly face of (the United States of) America,” Zawahri said in an audio recording posted on an Islamist website and whose authenticity could not be verified.

Religious procession stoned, tension in Lucknow

Tension prevailed in the old city area here when members of two groups engaged in brick-batting and arson during a religious procession, police said wednesday.

The incident took place this morning when a procession to commemorate the death anniversary of Hazrat Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet, was being taken out in old city by the members of Shia community, they said.

As soon as the procession reached near Bhadeva telephone exchange in Bazar Khala locality some persons started pelting stones leading to a stampede-like situation.

Sharad Kumar is new NIA chief

Senior IPS officer Sharad Kumar was on Tuesday appointed as the new chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The post of the Director General (DG) of the agency was lying vacant for about last two months following the retirement of incumbent S C Sinha. Sinha was later appointed as a member of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Kumar is a 1979-batch Haryana cadre officer and he takes over the top post of the probe agency at a time when it is investigating important cases like Hyderabad blasts and the recent Bodh Gaya blasts in Bihar.

Days after pesticide-laced lunch killed 23 school children in Bihar, UN body Food and Agriculture Organisation today asked developing countries like India to speed up the withdrawal of hazardous pesticides from their markets.

“The tragic incident in Bihar, India, where 23 school children died after eating a school meal contaminated with monocrotophos, is an important reminder to speed up the withdrawal of highly hazardous pesticides from markets in developing countries,” FAO said in a statement.

Verdict on gang rape accused juvenile may be put off

The verdict on the juvenile accused in the Dec 16 gang rape case is likely to be put on hold as the Supreme Court Wednesday fixed for Aug 14 its hearing on a petition on the legally defined age for a juvenile.

Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy has petitioned the apex court, challenging the law fixing 18 as the age of juvenile, and the court Wednesday asked him to inform the Juvenile Justice Board that it will hear the petition Aug 14.

2 killed, over 40 feared drowned as bus falls into Bhakra canal

Two passengers were killed and at least 42 feared drowned after a Punjab roadways bus fell into a canal near Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab in the wee hours on Wednesday, police said.

The ill—fated bus was on its way from Delhi to Amritsar when the mishap took place around 2 a.m., police said.

The bus was swept in the gushing canal water about 3 kms downstream before getting stuck at Saundh headworks from where Bhakra Main Line Canal and Narwana Canal get separated, officials said.

BJP launches overseas unit in Canada

Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP) has launched a Canada unit with chapters in four major cities -Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa – to connect with the Indian diaspora.

The Canada chapter of India’s main opposition party was formally launched Monday by OFBJP global convener Vijay Jolly at a one day forum organized in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada under its “global community overreach programme”.

OFBJP Canada shall focus on improving cultural and heritage links between the people of Canada and India, Jolly said.

India is ahead of the world in prison reforms: Kiran Bedi

India leads the world in prison reforms even though the jails here are not as secure as those in the West, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has said.

“India is ahead in prison reforms. I am making a confirmed statement as I visited more than 40 prisons around the world. The reforms which we have been able to do are not seen elsewhere,” Bedi told reporters here.

In town to promote upcoming Hindi film ‘Calapor’ which is based on prison reforms, Bedi said jails in the western countries are very secure as they follow the rulebook strictly.

Bhim Sain Bassi, the new Police commissioner of Delhi, has his priorities clear – he wants to make the national capital safe for women.

Bassi, who took over from outgoing chief Neeraj Kumar, said on Wednesday that he will work to ensure that a slew of new steps are being introduced to ensure that women feel safe at all times in the city.

“We have identified routes which are frequented by ladies or young girls. Special patrolling is being ensured along those routes,” Bassi said in an interview.

Telangana issue: Cong MLA tenders resignation

P Ramesh Babu, a Congress legislator from Pendurthy Assembly constituency in the district, has resigned from his post to protest the Congress decision to form a separate Telangana state.

The MLA told PTI here today that he sent his resignation letter to Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar through fax last night.

“I am for united Andhra,” Ramesh Babu said, adding that he resigned from his post as he was upset over his party’s decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and carve out Telangana as a separate state.

Rain fury claims 51 lives in Madhya Pradesh

Excessive rains and flash floods have claimed as many as 51 lives in Madhya Pradesh in this monsoon season, besides damaging 7,824 houses and rendering scores of people homeless.

According to an official release on Wednesday, heavy rains killed 51 people and 215 cattle across the state.

About 10 people were killed in Sagar district, four each in Vidisha and Khargone, one each in Dindori, Bhind, Ujjain, Katni and Balaghat, five in Indore, three in Seoni, two each in Damoh and Ratlam, six in Dewas and seven in Rajgarh district, this monsoon.

Bandh in Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra against Telangana decision

Normal life was disrupted in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions on Wednesday as a shutdown began in the two regions against the decision of the Congress and the UPA to create Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh.

Educational institutions, commercial establishments remained closed and the services of state-run Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) were suspended in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra districts like Kadapa, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam and Krishna.

Girl student attacked in campus with axe, attacker dies

A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) female student was seriously injured in an attack by a male student with an axe in the college campus on Wednesday. While the girl’s condition is stated to be critical, the attacker later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The incident took place today morning around 11 am at the JNU campus where Akash and Roshni were studying Korean lanuage in the university’s linguistic department.

The attack took place in the room number 203 of the university after both the students reportedly enterted into an argument.

Divide Uttar Pradesh into four states, says Mayawati

The Bahujan Samaj Party demanded splitting of Uttar Pradesh into four smaller states Wednesday, a day after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) urged the government to form a separate state of Telangana.

“We have always supported smaller states,” BSP chief Mayawati said here at a press conference.

She said Uttar Pradesh should be divided into four smaller states — Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Pashchim Pradesh.

“When this population is divided between four states, development will increase,” she said.

In yet another first, the country’s largest prison Tihar Jail has now got its very own FM radio station.

Director General of Prisons Vimla Mehra today launched the ‘TJ FM Radio’ at Central Jail No 4 in the Tihar complex.

“The FM Radio has been established to meet the twin objectives of entertainment and training of prisoners as Radio Jockey (RJ). The prisoners can engage themselves in creative activities and also get trained as Radio Jockey (RJ),” Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said.

Yemen consulate to be set up soon in Hyderabad

Yemen’s consulate will soon be set up in Hyderabad. Yemen government has finalized the preparations. This was revealed by Ausaf Sayeed, India’s ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Yemen who has been appointed as Indian counsel General in Chicago.

Teenaged rape victim dies of injuries in Jharkhand

A girl who was allegedly raped and brutally thrashed Sunday in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand died of her injuries early Wednesday at a hospital in the state capital, police said.

Police said the teenaged girl, a student of an intermediate college (Class 11 and 12) was allegedly abducted when she was returning home and raped in Ramgarh district.

The girl, a resident of Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, was admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi for treatment. She slipped into coma, and died early Wednesday morning.

A mourning procession was taken out from historical Charminar yesterday evening, by All India Shia Conference to mark the martyrdom of Hazrath Ali. A large number of mourners participated in the procession. The procession passed through Pathargatti, Madina Circle, Chatta Bazar, Purani Haveli, Darushifa and AzaKhana-e-Zahra and reached Masjid Imamia Khanpura Kali Qaber. Champs India to start campaign against Pak

Defending champions India will take on arch-foes Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC cricket World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29 in 2015.

Placed in Group B, India, who won the 2011 event after defeating Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai, will start their title defence on February 15.
