Shah Rukh Khan plans to break Ramzan fast with fans in Dubai

Shah Rukh Khan, who will be visiting Dubai on Thursday to promote his upcoming flick `Chennai Express`, will break his fast along with fans.

Khan will be accompanied by his co-star Deepika Padukone and director Rohit Shetty, Gulf News reported.

The movie, which is the story of a man who travels from Mumbai to south India to discover himself and falls in love with the daughter of a don, is slated for August 8 release.

Pak Taliban planning to attack Musharraf’s farmhouse in Islamabad

Banned militant outfits in Pakistan have planned to attack former president Pervez Musharraf’s farmhouse in Islamabad, security agencies have revealed. Musharraf is being held at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse, which was declared a sub-jail, after being charged in multiple criminal cases. According to the Express Tribune, information gathered by the intelligence agencies revealed that militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan could carry out the attacks.

Sir Ian Wilmut – the pioneering scientist whose team unveiled Dolly as the world’s first cloned mammal in 1996 – has outlined how to help bring extinct woolly mammoths back to life.

The procedure, which echoed of techno-thriller ‘Jurassic Park’ – was spelled out by Edinburgh-based stem-cell scientist Wilmut.

Wilmut said in an article that it is unlikely that the extinct mammal could be cloned in the same way as Dolly, as much more modern techniques are needed to convert tissue cells into stem cells to achieve the feat.

Arctic ice melt not extreme, say researchers

Jamie Morison, a polar scientist at the UW Applied Physics Laboratory and principal investigator since 2000 of the North Pole Environmental Observatory, said that every summer when the sun melts the surface the water has to go someplace, so it accumulates in these ponds.

Researchers said that one of the issues in interpreting the image is that the camera uses a fisheye lens.

Visa bonds to impact India Inc’s UK investment plans: Ficci

Expressing concern over Britain’s plan to introduce a scheme of demanding a whopping 3,000 pounds visa bond from visitors from certain countries, including India, Ficci on Wednesday said the proposed move could “certainly impact” India Inc’s investment plans for the UK.

“It is indeed a matter of concern if the UK government actualises its plans to seek 3,000 pounds refundable bonds from Indians applying for UK visas in the immediate future… It could certainly impact the Indian industry’s investment plans for the UK,” industry body Ficci said.

Govt extends last date for filing income tax returns to Aug 5

The government on Wednesday extended the last date for filing of income tax returns by five days to August 5.

The due date, which was today, has been extended in wake of “unprecedented surge” in number of I-T returns being filed electronically.

“As a measure of taxpayers convenience, it has been decided to extend the due date of filing of returns from July 31, 2013 to August 5, 2013,” the Finance Ministry said.

As per the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), there has been an unprecedented surge in number of returns being e-filed.

Digvijay Singh justifies making Hyderabad as common capital

AICC General Secretary and in-charge for AP Congress Affairs Digvijay Singh on Wednesday justified making Hyderabad as the common capital for the two States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Talking to reporters here, Digvijay Singh said that there was no harm in sharing a capital as it would need some time to create a new capital for Andhra Pradesh. “People need to understand that unless a new capital is formed, Hyderabad will be the joint capital. Ultimately, it will be in Telangana,” he said.

Rate of interest subsidy for exporters hiked to 3%

Seeking to encourage exports, the government on Wednesday decided to raise the rate of interest on subsidy scheme for exporters to 3 percent and widen the coverage of the scheme to cover more sectors.

“The rate of interest subvention from tomorrow, which would be available to exporters, would be enhanced to 3 percent…That is deepening of the benefit”, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told reporters.

At present the interest subvention for exporters, which is a kind of interest subsidy, is at 2 percent.

India hopes to contain gold imports below last year’s level

India hopes to contain gold imports well below 845 tonnes that were shipped last year, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Wednesday, a week after the RBI restricted imports further by tying imports to exports volumes.

“We hope to contain gold imports at a level well below last year’s total imports of 845 metric tonnes and save considerable amount of foreign exchange, which will have a positive impact on the current account deficit,” Chidambaram said.

US against ‘zero option’ for its troops in Afghanistan

US is against the “zero option” for the number of troops that would remain in Afghanistan after 2014, arguing that the mission is still not yet accomplished, said a Pentagon official.

However, it would have no other option except for the “zero option”, if the United States didn’t successfully negotiate a security deal with Kabul that will give it a legal basis for having forces in Afghanistan after 2014, said Peter Lavoy, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asia Pacific Security Affairs.

Civilian casualties up 23 per cent in Afghan war: UN

Civilian casualties in the Afghan war rose 23 per cent in the first half of this year due to Taliban attacks and increased fighting between insurgents and government forces, the UN said Wednesday.

The increase reverses a decline in 2012 and raises questions about how Afghan government troops can protect civilians as US-led NATO troops withdraw from the 12-year war against the Taliban.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said 1,319 civilians died and 2,533 were injured as a result of the war from January 1 to June 30, up 23 percent on the same period in 2012.

India, Pakistan risk ‘surplus terrorism’ after Afghan pullout: US

India and Pakistan fears that any instability in the war-torn Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US troops could result in “surplus terrorism” in both the countries, a top US official has said.

At the same time he added that the US believes both India and Pakistan will play significant roles in Afghanistan in the coming years.

“I think both Pakistan and India will play and ought to play very important, significant roles going forward in Afghanistan” said Peter Lavoy, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asia Pacific Security Affairs.

Bradley Manning cleared of ‘aiding enemy’ but faces 136-yr jail

Bradley Manning, the US soldier who gave a number of classified files to WikiLeaks, has been cleared of aiding the enemy but still faces a potential life sentence in prison.

A US military court martial did not find Manning on a lock-up-for-life charge of aiding the enemy by leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind however convicted the 25-year-old soldier on five charges of espionage , five of theft, one of computer fraud and a series of other military wrong-doings.

A Gurdwara in California has been vandalised and the word “terrorist” scrawled on its walls in an apparent hate crime, days ahead of the first anniversary of the Oak Creek Gurdwara shooting in Wisconsin.

“The Sikh Gurdwara in Riverside was vandalised on the night of July 29 in an apparent hate crime. The word ‘terrorist’ was spray-painted around the complex,” the Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund (SALDEF) said.

The Russian Orthodox Church is preparing to give over 1.3 million US dollars to residents of Syrian cities, spokesman of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Ministry Vasily Rulinsky said.

In an interview with Izvestiya newspaper, Rulinsky said, “The Antioch Church’s Department for External Church Relations and Development helps. Clothes, mattresses, foodstuff and hygienic essentials are being given to those in need. Thus, our assistance will be very important.”

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s father Lon Snowden has reportedly said that his son’s case is different from that of WikiLeaks accused Bradley Manning.

According to the Politico, Snowden’s father said that people want to compare both cases of Edward and Manning but they are completely different because he thinks his son has exercised discretion in the information that he has shared.

The report added Snowden’s father saying that Edward certainly admires Manning whom he calls ‘a classic whistleblower inspired by the public good’.
