Russian aerospace defence drills satisfactory: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the results of this week’s snap check of the Aerospace Defence Forces as “satisfactory”, after hearing nine of the 11 missiles were intercepted during the drills.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu informed the president of the results at a meeting in the Kremlin.

The exercises, involving 8,700 people, 185 aircraft and 240 military vehicles, checked the combat readiness of aerospace defence units, air force units and air defences in the western military district, as well as military transport and long-range aviation command.

Four firefighters die in US hotel blaze

At least four firefighters died while battling a hotel fire in Houston, the fourth largest US city, Friday, officials said.

Over 100 firefighters were reportedly on the scene, and the Red Cross was also there providing assistance. But it could not be immediated ascertained what sparked the fire, Xinhua reported.

The fire broke out at the Bhojan Restaurant about 12.09 p.m. local time (Houston) and engulfed the neighbouring Southwest Inn in Houston, a US daily said.

EU urges Israel to stop settlements actives

The European Union (EU) has asked Israel to stop its settlement activities as they are illegal according to international law.

The foreign policy chief of the European Union (EU) Catherine Ashton on Friday urged Israel to stop its settlements actives.

“Settlements are illegal under international law and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible,” reported Xinhua citing Catherine Ashton, the foreign policy chief of EU, in a statement Friday.

The statement was made in the wake of recent reports about renewed plans for Israeli settlements in and around east Jerusalem.

IPL spot-fixing: Rajasthan Royals player Sidharth Trivedi will be prosecution witness

Rajasthan Royals player Sidharth Trivedi will be a prosecution witness in the IPL spot-fixing case in which three players of his team have been arrested.

30-year-old Trivedi, a pacer, had refused to accept an invitation by Ajit Chandila, a player arrested on charges of spot-fixing, to attend a party arranged by bookies. He had also refused money and gifts offered by the bookies.

“He is being made a prosecution witness,” a senior police official said.

Investigators believe that Trivedi’s deposition in the case will make their case stronger.

Dowry death: 12 people get life imprisonment

Twelve people were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court today in a dowry death case in the district.

Additional District and Session judge Shailendra Kumar also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 each on all the accused. In case of failure to pay the fine, their sentence would be increased by one year.

The victim’s husband Shambhu Kumar Arya is among the 12 convicts.

Sanjoo Devi, 23, was strangled to death in Saristabad locality of Jehanabad district on November 24, 2008.

China toilet baby’s mother near mental collapse: report

A mother whose newborn baby was rescued from a toilet pipe in China is in hospital after nearing “mental collapse” while the alleged father has requested a DNA test, state-run media reported today.

The mother of the child, who became lodged in the pipe after she gave birth on the toilet, is “on the edge of mental collapse, because she has not rested after giving birth, and is being treated in hospital” the Modern Gold Daily newspaper reported.

Engineer held for posting obscene pix in woman’s facebook

The Crime Branch of Odisha Police today arrested a young engineer on charge of posting of photograph and vulgar comments containing sexually explicit act on the facebook of a woman, the police said.

Sushant Kumar Mishra of Cuttack, was arrested based on technical and other evidences, a crime branch official said adding that the accused had become acquainted with the women through online chat.

Later, the official said, he allegedly uploaded her photographs and with vulgar comments containing sexually explicit act in her facebook and sent them in mobile phones.

3 held for duping Andhra-based real estate developer

Three persons were arrested here today for allegedly duping a real estate developer of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh on the pretext of providing cheap loan, police said.

Shalender Pratap Singh, Satender Kumar and Sonpal Singh were arrested from Rohini Sector 9 after one N Prakasham, a resident of Tirupati, lodged a police complaint that the trio duped him of Rs 12 lakh on the pretext of providing loan of Rs 1 crore at three per cent per annum, they said.

Prisoner dies of food poisoning in Goa jail, several take ill

A murder convict died of suspected food poisoning today and over 130 inmates of Goa Central Jail at Aguada and Sub-Jail at Mapusa near here took ill after apparently consuming the dinner prepared by prisoners last night, jail authorities said.

The deceased, identified as Mahadev Gaonkar, had been serving a five-year jail term, IG (Prison) Mihir Vardhan said.

“A total of 17 inmates are currently being treated at state-run Goa Medical College (GMC) while a team of doctors has been stationed at Aguada jail for medical check-up of all prisoners,” he told reporters.

Middle aged woman raped, accused held

A man from Behrampura area here was booked on the charge of raping a 35-year-old woman from Mumbai on the pretext of marrying her, police said today.

Aakash Bachani was booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after the woman lodged the complaint against him with Navrangpura police yesterday.

The woman alleged that Bachani befriended her via Internet and entered into physical relationship with her by promising to marry her but went back on his word, police said.

Madhuri to get intimate with Naseeruddin in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’

In the upcoming film ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, which is a sequel to Vidya Balan-starrer ‘Ishqiya’, actress Madhuri Dixit will do some intimate scenes with veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.

In the 2010-hit film ‘Ishqiya’, Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi did some intimate scenes, while in the sequel Madhuri and Naseeruddin will have some steamy love scenes.

US economy starting to pick up steam: Obama

US President Barack Obama today said the American economy is starting to pick up steam with the creation of some seven million jobs in the past 38 months.

“The good news is, today, our businesses have created nearly 7 million new jobs over the past 38 months. 500,000 of those jobs are in manufacturing. We’re producing more of our own energy, we’re consuming less energy, and we’re importing less from other countries,” Obama said at a White House event.

US President Barack Obama today said that NATO will hold a summit next year on the “final chapter” in its Afghan war and on a new training mission for after combat troops withdraw at the end of 2014.

Kerry’s comments at a news conference with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle came ahead of a preparatory meeting in Geneva next week on a US-Russian bid for a peace conference on Syria.

Family fears worst for US woman thought dead in Syria

The family of a US woman believed to have been killed in Syria was anxiously awaiting news of her fate today, after reports that she was shot dead by regime forces near the border with Turkey.

“Keep us in your prayers,” Carole Mansfield told AFP as she awaited confirmation from US officials that her granddaughter, Nicole Lynn Mansfield, was among three Westerners reportedly killed on Wednesday.

Mansfield, 33, grew up in Flint, Michigan and was raised a Baptist. She converted to Islam about five or six years ago and briefly married an Arab immigrant, her grandmother said.
