DD Urdu to present documentary on Khudabaksh Library prepared by MANUU

A documentary film on well-known and historical Khudabaksh Library, Patna prepared by Instructional Media Centre, Maulana Azad National Urdu University will be telecast on June 2, 2013, 8 am and 5:30 pm on Doordarshan Urdu Channel.

The Khudabaksh Library located at the foot of River Ganges in Patna has a rich collection of 21000 eastern manuscripts and 2.5 lakh printed books. The library now is completely working under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

LPG subsidy in bank accounts in 18 districts from today

The cooking gas (LPG) consumers in 18 districts will get Rs. 435 in their bank accounts when they book an LPG cylinder from today onwards, as the government rolls out its ambitious Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme to cut its fuel subsidy.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dr. M. Veerappa Moily will launch the scheme in Tumkur in Karnataka, while Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Lakshmi Panabaka will start the scheme in Hyderabad.

Bihar official cooked food in silver pressure cooker

A Bihar official used to cook his food in a silver pressure cooker, leaving a Bihar Police raiding team bewildered.

The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) team of the Bihar Police was flummoxed when it recovered during raids on the government engineer a silver pressure cooker. The vessel was later produced in court, an official said here Saturday.

“It surprised us all that a silver pressure cooker was recovered. It was brought to the court as evidence,” a team official told IANS.

NATO to meet on Afghanistan next year : Obama

US President Barack Obama said Friday that NATO leaders will meet again next year to discuss troop withdrawals from Afghanistan.

The Afghan war dominated Obama’s meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the White House, Xinhua reported.

Obama said they discussed the steps to be taken after 2014 to enhance the ability of the Afghan security forces to “control their own borders” and secure Afghanistan from being used “as a base for terrorism in the future”.

Narayana Murthy returns to Infosys as Executive Chairman

In a major top management re-shuffle, Infosys today said it has re-appointed N R Narayana Murthy as Executive Chairman and Additional Director with immediate effect.

The decision was taken at a board meeting held earlier in the day, Infosys said in a statement, adding the appointment will be with effect from June 1, 2013. Veteran banker K V Kamath would step down from his position as Chairman of the Board and take up the role of Lead Independent Director, it added.

Srinivasan cornered further, may quit soon

Pushed into a corner, the embattled N Srinivasan’s days as BCCI President appear to be numbered as more Board officials have threatened to quit following the resignations of two senior functionaries in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing scandal.

According to top BCCI sources, a message has been conveyed to Srinivasan that he should step down on his own failing which more Board officials will put in their papers to bring about a constitutional crisis in the body.

Girl attempts suicide after harassment by 4 youths

A teenage girl attempted suicide in Thane after being allegedly harassed by four youths, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday evening at Salvad locality in Boisar when the 17-year-old poured kerosene and set herself afire, they said.

The girl suffered 70 per cent burns and was rushed to the Rural Hospital initially and later shifted to Masina hospital in Palghar where she is battling for her life, police added.

The U.S. city hit by a deadly tornado less than two weeks ago was slammed again, and the Oklahoma medical examiner’s office said five people were killed. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a mother and baby were among the dead, and emergency officials said reports of injuries were “widespread.”

Tornadoes hit Oklahoma City on Friday evening, smashing vehicles along a major highway during rush hour. Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph said troopers found woman and baby near a vehicle along Interstate 40 west of the city.

Govt plans universities for minorities in 5 states

The UPA government is planning to take a major step before the 2014 General Elections. According to a leading daily, the government has a plan to set up five universities with as much as 50 percent reservation for the minorities.

The daily has quoted Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan as saying that socio-economic backwardness would be the key determinant for the reservation. He further clarified that the minorities would not comprise just religious minorities, but also those mentioned in Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution.

Heavy rains lash Bangalore, cripple normal life

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds and lightening lashed this tech hub late Friday, crippling normal life, inundating low-laying areas and throwing vehicular traffic out of gear across the city.

Direct cash transfer for LPG consumers starts today

Direct transfer scheme for LPG cylinder subsidy has come into force from June 1. Under the scheme, the government will transfer Rs 435 directly in the bank accounts of LPG consumers in 18 districts of the country.

Consumers will get the money each time they book for an LPG refill. These consumers then will have to buy cooking gas at market price. The government hopes to save Rs 8,000-10,000 crore annually after the scheme is rolled out all over the country.

Makkah building eight tunnels to ease congestion

Eight tunnels are being constructed in Makkah to help ease congestion in the city, according to Arab News.

The projects include two tunnels for pedestrians, three emergency tunnels for rapid evacuation purposes, two tunnels for sewage and electricity, and one for services.

“The tunnels are constructed as part of King Abdullah Project for Expansion of Makkah and holy sites,” one source said, adding that they would be ready for use shortly.

Shia educationist shot dead in Karachi

A prominent Shia educationist and his driver on Friday were shot and killed by unknown attackers in Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi, police said.

Syed Azfar Rizvi was in his car with the driver when unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire at them. Both Rizvi and his driver succumbed to their injuries on their way to hospital. Their bodies have been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, police said.

Rizvi was head of the Dhaka Group of Educational Institutions and served as an honorary secretary of Anjuman-e-Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan.

NATO ministers to review cyber defence

NATO defence chiefs will meet in Brussels next week to review measures for protecting member countries from cyber attacks, a diplomatic source said Friday.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will be among the ministers meeting Tuesday and Wednesday.

NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in March the alliance planned to “strengthen cyber-security” in response to “regular” computer attacks.

Nawaz Sharif expresses concern over US drone strikes

Nawaz Sharif, who is set to become prime minister of Pakistan, Friday expressed strong reservations over US drone attacks inside Pakistani territory.

The drone strikes were not only violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty but also against international laws and UN charter, reported Xinhua citing Sharif, the chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in a statement.

The concern was conveyed to the US Charge d’affaires in Islamabad, said a spokesperson for Sharif.

Syria seeks to revive fighter jet deal with Russia

Syria wants to revive a contract to purchase MiG-29M/M2 fighter jets from Russia in the wake of upcoming expiration of an EU embargo on arms sales to Syria, the representatives of aircraft maker MiG said Friday.

“A Syrian delegation is currently in Moscow. We’re discussing details and timeframe of a possible contract,” MiG head Sergei Korotkov told journalists without elaborating.
