Pak police arrests Musharraf over killing of Baloch leader

Pakistani police today arrested and interrogated beleaguered former President Pervez Musharraf over the killing of Baloch leader Akbar Bugti in a 2006 military operation, one of three high-profile cases that have dogged him since he returned to the country from self-exile.

A team of Balochistan Police arrested the former military ruler and grilled him for nearly four hours at his farmhouse on the outskirts of Islamabad, which was declared a “sub-jail” by authorities.

Sarabjit, ‘national martyr’, will be given state funeral: Punjab CM

Describing Sarabjit Singh as a “national martyr”, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said that the Indian death row prisoner, who died in Pakistan, will be given a state funeral.

49-year-old Sarabjit’s death was an “entirely avoidable tragedy”, Badal said while strongly condemning the “inhuman treatment and brutal murder” of the prisoner right under the nose of the Pakistani authorities.

Pakistan hands over body of Sarabjit Singh to Indian officials

The body of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who died early on Thursday following a brutal assault by other inmates of a jail here, was handed over to officials of the Indian high commission by Pakistani authorities.

The body will be flown from Lahore to Indian this afternoon, Indian and Pakistani officials said.

Earlier, Pakistan gave clearance for a special Indian flight to take back the body.

Two officials of the Indian high commission received the body. They will accompany the body on the special flight to India.

Mercury soars to 44 degrees

Heat wave conditions prevail in the State with temperatures hovering around 44 degrees in some places.

The highest temperature of 44 degrees was recorded at Rentichinthala followed by Nizamabad (43), Hanakonda, Medak and Ramagundam (42).

Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and the city recorded 41 degrees.

Food Minister K V Thomas moved the bill for passage and consideration but prevailing uproar over issues like Sarabjit Singh’s death, Chinese incursion and domestic issues including coal block allocation and other scams forced adjournment of the House for the day without passage of the measure.

Man throws acid on woman’s face

An unidentified man on Thursday threw acid on the face of a 25-year-old woman at the crowded Bandra Terminus railway station soon after she arrived here from Delhi to take up a job, police said.

The victim, identified as R Preeti, was attacked at around 8.15 AM by the accused, who had covered his face with a handkerchief, they said.

Preeti, along with her father, uncle and aunt, had arrived here today by Garib Rath from the national capital, they added.

Salman Khan expresses grief over Sarabjit Singh’s death

Bollywood star Salman Khan, who had launched an online petition asking for Sarabjit Singh’s freedom in 2012, Thursday mourned the death of the Indian death row prisoner in Pakistan.

“Freedom at last. Hope they give him to his family. We all tried, guess not hard enough. May god give his family strength and his soul rests in peace,” Salman posted on Twitter.

Last year, Salman had urged his fans and the public to join an online petition that he planned to give to the Pakistan government in a bid to free Sarabjit.

Fresh tremors rock Bhaderwah

Tremors on Thjursday shook Bhaderwah Valley and adjoining areas of Doda district, triggering panic among locals rattled by a series of quakes. The quake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shook the area at 6.04 am, the MeT Department official said. Two aftershocks of lesser intensity were felt till 9.36 am in the belt. However, there was no immediate report of any casualty or injury, officials said.

Sarabjit to be cremated in Bhikhiwind Friday; anger in town

Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who died in Pakistan early Thursday, will be cremated in his hometown Bhikhiwind in Punjab’s border district of Tarn Taran, amid great anger in the town.

Sarabjit’s family, which was in New Delhi, reached Bhikhiwind, 50 km from Amritsar, by helicopter Thursday evening. Scores of local residents gathered at the helipad to meet them and walked with them to their house.

Shiv Sena activists protest over Sarabjit’s death

A series of protest demonstrations were held in Phagwara over the death of Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani hospital, leading to diversion of international buses running between Delhi and Lahore in the neighbouring country.

Activists of Shiv Sena, led by its state unit vice-president Inderjit Karwal, took out a protest march from Hanumangarhi temple and converged on National Highway 1 at Sugar Mill crossing.

They blocked the traffic briefly in protest against the failure of Indian government to save Sarabjit.

Special aircraft leaves for Pakistan to bring Sarabjit’s body

A special aircraft has left for Pakistan to bring back the body of India prisoner Sarabjit Singh who died in a Lahore hospital Thursday, an official said.

“Aircraft to bring back Sarabjit Singh’s body has left for Lahore at 3.46 p.m. We expect aircraft to reach there in about 45 minutes,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told reporters here.

“It is an Air India aircraft… Regarding its flight back, it will fly from Lahore to Amritsar and two officials of Indian High Commission will accompany the body,” he said.

270 Indians in Pakistan jails

There were 215 fishermen and 55 other Indian nationals in Pakistan jails as of Jan 1 this year, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) announced here Thursday.

The figures were according to the lists exchanged between India and Pakistan on Jan 1 each year, MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said at a press conference on a day that Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh died in a Lahore hospital after being attacked by his fellow inmates.

Protests in Andhra town over rape, murder of minor girl

A shutdown was Thursday observed in Andhra Pradesh’s Nalgonda town to protest the rape and murder of a minor girl in the town two days ago.

Shops and business establishments remained closed on a call given by all the major political parties besides several non-political organisations to condemn the incident in the town, about 110 km from here.

An 11-year-old girl, missing since April 28, was found murdered April 30.

The daughter of an automobile mechanic, she had gone out to buy milk.

Indian embezzles 500,000 dirhams from UAE firm

A former Indian marketing manager of an event management company here has been charged with embezzling 500,000 dirhams from his employer using forged documents.

The 44-year-old man, identified only by his initials, AK, is said to have embezzled the amount by handing over 15 forged purchase receipts to the finance department of the company that organised nightlife events, the Gulf News reported Thursday.

He then sought urgent medical leave saying he had cancer in a bid to abscond.

Prosecutors have now charged him with abusing his former job and embezzlement.
