Shahid escapes serious injury in fire

Actor Shahid Kapoor, who has been shooting hardcore action sequences for Prabhudheva’s “Rambo Rajkumar”, managed to escape a serious injury.

It happened Friday when the 32-year-old was shooting at Kamalistan Studio for a scene where he has to enter a burning house. He finished his shot and was stepping out of the burning house, when some hot chemical solution dripped on to his back and arms.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar files writ in HC

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar filed a writ petition in Patna High Court today seeking the closure of a road constructed on her land at Chandwa village in Bihar’s Bhojpur district without consent.

Hearing the petition, a single bench of Justice Jaynandan Singh directed Principal Secretaries of Panchayati Raj and Rural Works Departments to submit their explanations in this regard by May 6.

The judge also asked the officials to tell the court about the policy of acquisition of such land.

The petition was filed by Kumar through her power of attorney holder Mukti Nath Tiwari.

Pakistan urged to end Taliban attacks

Pakistan’s government should take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of candidates and political activists at risk of attack from the Taliban and other militants, Human Rights Watch said Monday.

Parliamentary elections in Pakistan are scheduled for May 11.

Since April 21, when campaigning formally began, the Taliban and other armed groups have carried out more than 20 attacks on political parties, killing 46 people and wounding over 190.

Earlier in April, another 24 people were killed and over 100 injured in election-related attacks.

Sarabjit to be treated in Pakistan, says panel

Sarabjit Singh will continue to receive treatment in Pakistan, said a medical panel formed to decide whether the Indian death row prisoner, who was grievously injured in an attack in Kot Lakhpat jail, needs to be taken abroad.

The four-member medical panel has shot down the possibility of Sarabjit Singh being sent abroad for specialised treatment and decided that he would continue to be treated in Pakistan, Geo News reported Monday.

The panel has informed the caretaker Punjab government of its decision, sources were quoted as saying.

60,000 Indians register at Indian missions in Saudi Arabia

Around 60,000 Indian workers have registered in the Indian embassy in Riyadh and the consulate general in Jeddah in the wake of the new Saudi labour policy, according to India’s Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi.

These people have been rushing to take advantage of an amnesty scheme being offered by the country’s ruler King Abdullah, the Saudi Gazette reported Monday.

The new policy, called Nitaqat, makes it mandatory for all Saudi companies to reserve 10 percent of jobs for Saudi nationals.

Parliament adjourned over coal blocks till Tuesday

Both houses of parliament were adjourned till Tuesday as the BJP Monday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over the contentious issue of coal blocks allocation.

Three car bomb attacks leave 8 dead, 50 wounded in southern Iraq

At least eight people were killed and 50 others injured when three car bomb attacks hit two cities in southern Iraq on Monday, an interior ministry source said.

Two car bombs exploded in a market in Amarah, some 300 km southeast of Baghdad, killing six people and wounding 30 others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another car bomb struck Diwaniyah, some 160 km southeast of Baghdad, killing two people and wounding 20 others, he added.

Indian in Bahrain stabbed in passport row

A 35-year-old Indian man in Bahrain was stabbed, allegedly by one of his employers, in a row after he went to collect his passport.

Radhakrishnan Thankappan Nair sustained injuries in his hand and shoulder and is being kept in the intensive care unit of the Salmaniya Medical Complex in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, the Gulf Daily News reported Monday.

According to the report, when Nair, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram in India’s Kerala state, went to get his passport ahead of a planned holiday, his employer allegedly told him that he would get it only if he signed a blank document.

13-year-old gang-rape victim again tries suicide

A 13-year-old victim of gang-rape, who was recuperating in hospital here after consuming an overdose of sleeping pills April 20, yet again tried to commit suicide late Sunday night at the hospital, her relatives said.

The girl was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from Hedgewar Hospital April 22, after she had taken an overdose of sleeping pills following her gang-rape during nine days of captivity by her attackers.

India to Pakistan: Release Sarabjit

Appealing for Sarabjit Singh’s release, India Monday asked Pakistan to take a “sympathetic and humanitarian” view on the Indian death row prisoner who is battling for life after being beaten in jail in Lahore.

The possibility of transferring Sarabjit Singh to India for treatment could be considered in order to provide him the “best medical treatment available here”, the ministry of external affairs said.

Two killed in Assam police firing, curfew imposed

Two people were killed and seven others injured Monday after police opened fire to disperse an irate mob in Assam, forcing the administration to impose indefinite curfew in the violence-affected area.

Assam’s Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S.N. Singh said the incident took place after the recovery of a man’s body from Rakshasini area of Goalpara district. The victim, Taher Ali, had been missing since Sunday evening.

Joint committee to be formed to help Indians workers in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia and India have decided to form a joint committee to address all problems facing Indians working in the Gulf Arab nation, the Al Eqtisadiya newspaper reported on Monday.

The decision was made here on Sunday during the visit of India” s Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi.

The two sides have agreed to have more transparent recruitment policies for Indians in Saudi Arabia, the paper said, quoting Ravi, who also said there will be a memorandum of understanding for the best interests of employers and employees of both countries.

An Australian Muslim teenager has claimed she was held against her will at a Brisbane service station after a worker confused company policy and refused to serve her. Hafsah Negussie, who wears a veil while in public, said she tried to pay for her goods and go, but claimed the attendant locked the doors when she attempted to leave, reports the Courier Mail. The incident, which occurred at a BP service station in Brisbane”s southside in December last year, was reported to police but no official report was filed until Negussie came forward again in April.

1,000 Sri Lankan boat people returned by Australia

The Australian government repatriated 25 more Sri Lankans who tried to illegally migrate, bringing the total number of boat people returned to over 1,000, the Australian embassy said Monday.

The group was advised of its status and that all its 25 members were subject to removal from Australia as none raised issues that engaged Australia’s international obligations, Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.

Without valid visa, the 25 had no legal right to remain in Australia, the statement said, adding that all were recent arrivals.

Man killed in Delhi road accident

A 35-year-old-man was killed and five people, including two children, were injured after a speeding SUV hit a stationary truck and a motorcycle here, police said Monday.

The accident took place late Sunday night at Mehrauli in south Delhi.

“The Scorpio (sports utility vehicle), which was going towards Ghitorni village, first hit Sanjeev, who was crossing the road and then hit a parked motorcycle on which two children, aged 8 and 10 years, were sitting and then it rammed into a truck parked at the roadside,” said a police officer.
