Obama wins another term in White House

Barack Obama has won a second term as US president, defeating his Republican rival Mitt Romney in a closely contested battle that seemed almost to close to call till the end.

Obama, who four years ago was elected as the US’ first African American president, won 274 electoral votes, four more than what was needed to win.

As celebrations broke out across the country, a victorious Obama tweeted: “Four more years.”

“We’re all in this together. That’s how we campaigned, and that’s who we are. Thank you,” said another tweet from Obama, the son of a Kenyan father and a white American.

Sonia to inaugurate rail coach factory in Rae Bareli

UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate a modern coach manufacturing factory in her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Barreli on Wednesday.

The inauguration of the Rs 1,685 crore coach factory was delayed for more than a year due to the vexed issue of compensation to farmers whose land was used for the factory.

The issue is being settled now as railways have decided to provide jobs to all the affected land owners, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

ED authority summons Jagan, others in money laundering cas

New Delhi: The adjudicating authority of the anti-money laundering Act here has summoned YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy and others in connection with an ED attachment order worth Rs 51 crore.

The Enforcement Directorate, last month, had issued attachment orders against Reddy and his associates in connection with its money laundering probe and the authority will now confirm or reject the same after hearing both the sides.

Jundal remanded in Crime Branch custody

A local court in Gujarat on Tuesday remanded LeT operative and key 26/11 handler Abu Jundal in one-day Crime Branch custody for his alleged involvement in spreading terror to avenge 2002 post-Godhra riots.

After the expiry of his remand yesterday, the Crime Branch today produced Jundal before the court of metropolitan magistrate BJ Ganatra and sought his remand for 14 days in an alleged conspiracy that was aimed at taking revenge of the 2002 riots by spreading terror in the state.

Student commits suicide in Osmania University

Frustrated over the delay in formation of a separate Telangana state, an Osmania University student committed suicide, leading to tension in the campus Wednesday.

V. Santosh, a degree student of a college in the city, hung himself from a tree in front of Arts College in Osmania University, which has been witnessing violent protests by students for last three years demanding separate statehood to Telangana.

Free legal guidance to police victims

(Siasat News) A few miscreants targeted the innocent Muslims recently in Sabzi Mandi, Kulsoompura, Musheerabad and other areas. In many cases, they caused injuries to youths also. Despite this, police arrested these youths in an organized way instead of arresting the culprits. It registered fake cases against them under various sections of IPC.

Majlis Bachao Tehrik (MBT) in its emergency meeting held yesterday decided to provide free legal assistance to such victims.

Asifnagar Traffic police misbehaves

(Siasat News) There was commotion in Mehdipatnam area when Asifnagar Traffic police started harassing the public in the name of traffic violations. In one such incident, despite payment of fine amount, the policeman locked the vehicle and started misbehaving.People got irritated and within a few minutes, a large number of persons assembled at Mehdipatnam crossroads and protested against he misbehavior of the police. Asifngar police dispersed the crowd by resorting to lathi charge but Mr. Narsaiah, Inspector of Police refuted that lathi charge was used.

Curbs on women at Haji Ali shrine, evoke protests

Mumbai’s iconic and religious shrine Haji Ali Dargah has barred women from entering the sanctum sanctorum housing the tomb of the 15th century Sufi saint, a decision that has sparked condemnation.

The management of the Sufi shrine, which is visited by tens of thousands of devotees every year, however, said on Tuesday women are allowed within the dargah’s large and open premises.

“Women are not allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Dargah,” said Rizwan Merchant, trustee of the Haji Ali Dargah Trust and also a noted criminal lawyer.

Police Commissioner denies connivance with Hindu organizations

Commissioner of Hyderabad City Police, Mr. Anurag Sharma refuted the charges leveled against him that he has any nexus with Hindu organizations. A local newspaper carried this news item . He told that during his entire service, he didn’t have connivance with any Hindu or Muslim organization. He is a disciplined police officer and maintenance of law and order has been his first preference. He has been taking steps for avoiding any unpleasant incident.

Minorities budget Rs. 489 crore – Tulasi Reddy

Dr. N. Tulasi Reddy, Chairman of 20 point Economic Programme implementation Committee disclosed in a review meeting convened yesterday to take stock of the implementation of the programme that Congress Govt. has allotted Rs. 489 crore in the budget for Minorities. During TDP’s regime from 1995 to 2004 only Rs. 99 crore were spent on the Welfare Schemes of Minorities. Congress Govt. has spent Rs. 924 crore during its rule. During this financial year Govt. has allocated Rs. 489 crore for Minorities, out of which Rs. 197 crore have already been released.

Mr. Anurag Sharma, Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad made a surprise visit to the city of Hyderabad last night. He surveyed the areas where section 144 is promulgated in the wake of recent communal riots.

A line of Texans snaked around a red brick school, one of 776 polling places in or around the nation’s fourth largest city of Houston, to cast their votes in the 2012 US presidential elections. The sentiment and mood among the voters indicated this was a tight race for incumbent President Barrack Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney.

“I’m not voting for Obama. I hate to say I’m voting for Romney, but I’ve got to vote for somebody,” said Lee Kemick, 48, who is in sales.

“I believe Obama inherited a terrible situation with the economy and then did nothing to make it better.”

Man dies while waiting in line to vote in Puerto Rico

A 63-year-old man died Tuesday while he was waiting in line to vote on election day in Puerto Rico, the police reported.

The man, identified as Robert Median Sotomayor, died near a polling place in Adjuntas, in southern Puerto Rico, after falling to the ground and suffering convulsions.

The man, whom eyewitnesses said was not involved in any incident, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A sessions court on Tuesday granted bail to 14 accused in custody for their alleged role in the Azad Maidan violence on August 11. The court had last week granted similar relief to 14 accused while the Bombay high court gave bail to four accused in this connection. Five of the 63 persons were earlier discharged after police found that there was no case against them.

RSS disapproves of Gadkari’s comments on Vivekananda

RSS today disapproved of Nitin Gadkari’s comments on Swami Vivekananda saying one should be “careful” about public sentiments, but refrained from saying anything on his continuation as party chief in the wake of letters against him by Ram Jethmalani.

“People like Swami Vivekananda are very respected people across the world. So when we talk about them…we have to keep in mind that sentiments of millions of people are attached to them and we should be careful about that,” RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said.

Hours before the polls closed in the US presidential election, some voters took to social media sites to post pictures of their completed ballots, which is illegal in several US states according to The Citizen Media Law Project (CMLP), a research center at Harvard University that explores cyberspace trends.

“Voting is a very private matter, and attempts to record at the polling place are subject to strict regulation to safeguard voter privacy, protect against voter intimidation, and to ensure the proper functioning of the voting process,” wrote representatives from the CMLP.
