Government clears India-Pak ODI series

The Home Ministry on Tuesday cleared Pakistan cricket team’s tour of India for a limited-over series beginning on December 25 and said that the government will provide foolproof security to the visiting team.

This was conveyed when a delegation of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh in Delhi on Tuesday, official sources said.

BCCI senior official Rajiv Shukla said that the board delegation discussed with the Home Secretary about security and logistical issues.

The 46-year-old Mexican beauty, who looks younger for her age, says she does not believe Botox can help either, the Daily Mail reported.

Workout in water to stay fit

Exercising in water is equally good for health as you do on land, says a study.

The study found that people who used an immersible ergocycle, basically an exercise bike in a pool, had just about the equivalent workout to using a typical stationary bike.

“If you can`t train on land, you can train in the water and have the same benefits in terms of improving aerobic fitness,” said Martin Juneau, director of prevention at the Montreal Heart Institute.

CRR cut: Growth more important than inflation, says Montek

Terming the decision of the Reserve Bank of India to cut cash reserve ration a step in the right direction, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Tuesday said the need to push growth should take precedence over combating inflation.

“I can see that the RBI remains concerned about inflation. I think we need to watch what happens in inflation but probably the need to push the growth at this moment is little higher on agenda than the concern about inflation,” Mr. Ahluwalia told reporters in New Delhi.

Sensex falls 205 points to 5-week low as RBI refrains from rate cut

The BSE benchmark Sensex on Tuesday shed 205 points to over five-week low of 18,430.85 on selling in banks and other rate-sensitive stocks after RBI dashed hopes of a rate cut, hiked loan provisioning norms and also cut economic growth projections.

After a better start, the Sensex rose by over 80 points in early trade on the back of hopes of a rate cut after the government yesterday announced a fiscal consolidation plan.

Mamata threatens agitation on TV digitisation issue

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday threatened to launch an agitation if television transmission was blacked out after the October 31 deadline for digitisation and accused the Centre of trying to adopt a path of “confrontation” with the states on the issue.

“When set top boxes are not in hand, analog system should be allowed to continue and the Centre has no right to blackout television. We can’t simply accept this stand of the Centre,” Ms. Banerjee told a press conference in Kolkata.

Centre to consider Punjab’s demand for more coal

The Coal Ministry Tuesday said it will consider the demands of Punjab government for providing more coal to power plants in the state.

“The Ministry of Coal will consider request of Punjab Government to ensure more coal for its Power Plant,” Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal has informed Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who called on him this afternoon.

Badal requested the ministry for temporary linkages or alternative arrangement of coal supply for Goindwal Power Plant which is to be commissioned in March, an official statement said here.

LPG consumers can now fill up KYC form till Nov 15

The government has extended by 15 days the deadline for filling the Know Your Customer (KYC) form by LPG consumers to November 15.

In a nationwide exercise to weed out multiple or ghost connections, the state-owned oil firms had previously asked their domestic cooking gas (LPG) distributors to collect and verify duly filled KYC forms from the consumers by October 31.

“We have now decided to extend the deadline by 15 days to November 15,” a senior Oil Ministry official said here.

Less than week after BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s name surfaced in an alleged wrongdoing in his business, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday accused his party of inaction against corrupt leaders.

Without naming Gadkari, Gandhi, addressing an election rally here – her second in the state – said: “No other party has fought corruption as we have. I want to ask the BJP what action has it taken against its own leaders who are accused of graft?”

“No action has been taken.”

Gandhi said the BJP is “not against corruption, but only against the Congress”.

Iran begins new military exercises

Iran’s regular Army has begun a two-day ground and air military exercise aimed at upgrading its combat readiness and increasing its deterrence against possible attacks.

State TV says the drills involve forces in a wide region in western Iran near the Iraqi border. It showed troops parachuting from helicopters near the towns of Sarpol-e Zahab and Qasr-e Shirin, about 700 kilometres west of Tehran.

The war games are taking place amid escalating tensions between Iran and the West over Iran’s disputed nuclear program.

500 BJP workers detained for holding protests in Hyderabad

Around 500 BJP workers, including former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and BJP national secretary Dr K Laxman, were taken into preventive custody for holding protests in front of the police commissionerate here today.

BJP’s Greater Hyderabad unit had organised a dharna opposite the Police Commissioner Office at Basheerbagh to protest cases registered against “innocent persons,” including the party’s workers, in connection with the recent incidents of communal violence in parts of the city, police said.

6.2 quake off British Columbia coast

The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.2 earthquake off the west coast of Canada is an aftershock of the magnitude 7.7 quake that struck Saturday night.

A geophysicist says the agency had no immediate reports that the latest quake that occured last night caused any significant damage or was widely felt.

The National Weather Service West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the last night quake was not expected to generate a tsunami.

Chidambaram not enthused by RBI’s stance

Apparently not enthused by the RBI’s cautious stance, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said that growth is as much a challenge as containing inflation and government would “walk alone” to face the challenge if it comes to that.

“Growth is as much a challenge as inflation. If government has to walk alone to face the challenge of growth, then we will walk alone,” he said in his reaction to the RBI’s second quarter policy review.

TDP suspends rebel MLA Praveen Reddy

The Telugu Desam on Tuesday suspended its MLA Praveen Kumar Reddy from Tamballapalli in Chittoor district, from the party with immediate effect after he met YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in the Chanchalguda prison here on Tuesday.

Praveen, elected to the state Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2009, recently criticised TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu after the latter wrote a letter to the Centre seeking immediate resolution of the Telangana statehood issue.

Pakistan: 24 killed in road accident

At least 24 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured when a van collided with a speeding truck in Pakistan’s Punjab province Tuesday, officials said.

The accident occurred on a busy highway in Bahawalpur.

The van, which was going to Ahmedpur Sharqia from Bahawalpur, collided head-on with the truck.

Twelve people were killed instantly and 12 others died in hospital, the officials said.

Seven women and three children were among the dead.

Several people were injured and some of them were in a critical condition, the officials said.
