Lohan assaulted inside hotel room

Actress Lindsay Lohan was reportedly assaulted by a man inside a hotel room here.

She told police that she was assaulted inside W Hotel here early Sunday morning by Christian Labella, 25, a man she met at Manhattan nightclub 1Oak.

According to Lohan, Labella had taken photos of her on his cell phone while they were hanging out at the hotel with a couple of her friends in her 15th floor room. When she saw the photos on his phone, she confronted him and took his phone.

Lohan said Labella then threw her on the bed, causing scratches, and even punched her.

Pen drives main threat to cyber security: Army

Despite a ban, use of pen drives has emerged as the main threat to cyber security in defence forces as it is responsible for over 70 percent of such breaches in the three Services.

The use of pen drives as an easy-to-carry storage device has increased in the recent past and internal reports have confirmed that over 70 percent cyber security breaches in the armed forces are due to their unauthorised use, Army officials told here.

“These pen drives, which are mostly manufactured in China, have emerged as a big threat to our cyber security systems,” they said.

J&K assembly condemns anti-Islam film

The Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly Monday unanimously passed a resolution condemning the anti-Islam film that has evoked violent reactions in some Muslim countries.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the state cabinet had already condemned the film that has hurt the feelings of millions of Muslims across the world.

“We have already condemned the film in the cabinet,” Abdullah told the 10-day autumn session of the state assembly which started here Monday.

World’s elderly could number two billion by 2050

Six of family charred to death in fire in TN

Six members of a family, including four minor children, were charred to death in a fire that engulfed their house at nearby Thoppuvalasai on Monday morning, police said.

The deceased included a man, whose wife is working abroad, his four minor children aged between 13 and one and his father, police said.

All the family members were asleep when the fire broke out, police said, adding that the cause of the fire is being ascertained.

Madhu Koda’s bail petition in money laundering case rejected

Jharkhand high court today rejected a bail petition moved by former chief minister Madhu Koda in a money laundering case against him pertaining to Rs 1,340 crore.

Justice H C Mishra, who had on Friday reserved the order, dismissed the petition after the counsel of the ED objected the petition on the ground that there was direct involvement of Koda in the case.

Koda contested that only Rs 20 crore was detected by the probing agency and how could the case sustain to the tune of Rs 1,340 crore and that he was not related, directly or indirectly, in the case.

Schools, colleges closed in Hyderabad, Telangana

Several educational institutions in Telangana region, including in Hyderabad, were closed on Monday following a bandh call by pro-Telangana groups.

Telangana student unions, including Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee gave a bandh call on Monday, protesting the alleged highhandedness of police during the ‘Telangana March’ in support of the separate statehood demand on Sunday.

State Road Transport Corporation said it had not cancelled bus services, but rescheduled them in some areas of Hyderabad.

Five Germans die in China accident

Six people, five Germans and a Chinese national, died and 14 passengers were injured after a tourist bus collided with a truck and caught fire Monday near here, police said.

The bus was carrying a group of German tourists and was driving on a pivotal expressway linking Beijing with Shanghai when the accident happened at 8.30 a.m., reported Xinhua, quoting the police.

The tour group was organised by the Beijing-based China Youth Travel Service.

Witnesses said they saw a few people escape the flames.

A photo posted on the web showed the whole vehicle engulfed in flames.

Kingfisher flights axed due to engineers strike

Kingfisher Airlines faced fresh turbulence with about two dozen flights being cancelled following a strike by maintenance engineers, an airport official said Monday.

Aircraft maintenance engineers, whose aircraft airworthiness clearance is mandatory for any flight to take off, struck work suddenly Sunday night over non-payment of salaries and dues for almost six months.

A Kingfisher spokesperson confirmed the development and said: “They have been threatening, and even manhandling the employees who are reporting to work as usual.”

WB minister’s son suffers burns trying to commit suicide

The son of a minister in the West Bengal government suffered severe burns when he tried to set himself on fire at his residence here early on Sunday.

The police said Sayan Biswas, 22, son of minister for horticulture and food processing Ujjal Biswas, poured petrol on himself and lit a match stick.

His father rushed to save him and burnt his hand in the process, additional SP of Nadia district Arindam Dutta-Chowdhury said.

Sayan was taken to the Krishnagar Shaktinagar District Hospital and later referred to the Apollo Hospital in Kolkata.

Maoists kill 2 CRPF jawans

Two CRPF jawans were Monday seriously injured after being shot at by Maoists during a combing operation in the forests of West Midnapore district.

District SP Sunil Chowdhury said that joint security forces were involved in a fierce gunbattle with the Maoists in Goaltore area’s Metla forest since last night during which R L Reddy and Bijoy Mahalakshmi were shot at in the morning.

The two jawans have been rushed to the district hospital in a critical condition, he said.

Police suspect that some Maoists have also been injured in the exchange of gun fire.

Man kills wife, hangs self over father-in-law’s greed

Enraged by his father-in-law’s refusal to return cash and jewels that he had handed over for safe-keeping, a man strangulated his wife to death and later hanged himself in Mungeli district, Chhattisgarh, police officials said Saturday.

Sub-divisional Officer of Police, Mungeli, JPN Singh said, “Bodies of a young couple were found in the house of their relative. The deceased have been identified as Pramod Satnami (25) and his wife Tulsi Satnami (23).
