Fines from men travelling in women’s only coaches have swelled Delhi Metro coffers by a staggering Rs.32 lakh ($60,394) in the two years since the rule was introduced on Oct 2, 2010, an official said.

In August alone, 1,538 men were penalised Rs.3.8 lakh but they continue to break the rule with impunity, the official said. This, in spite of the fact that the first coach of each train is reserved for women only and this is prominently marked on both the train and on the platform.

Young India turning to ageing hearts, says survey

Though India boasts of its young population, a survey by a UN panel has indicated that the country has around 90 million ageing people and the figure is expected to touch a whopping 315 million by 2050.

The United Nation Population Fund survey has asked the government to work out on how to cope with the ageing population. The government must invest in social security and health care of older people, it said.

The UNFPA survey, partnered with many other organisation, has noted that aged population is growing rapidly in many developing countries.

224 million Indians are undernourished: Report

India has 224.6 million undernourished people as nearly a fifth of the country’s population does not receive the minimum number of calories required by an average individual, says the newly launched Global Food Security Index (GFSI).

Sixty-eight point seven percent of the population in India lives below the global poverty line, the index said.

Maharashtra aims to boost organ donations, widens net

In a bid to boost organ donations, the Maharashtra government has initiated several measures aimed at strengthening the health network and widening the net of prospective donors, a top official said Monday.

The state government issued a government resolution (GR) making it mandatory for hospitals to inform about their ‘brain dead’ patients to organ transplant centres through Divisional Transplant Co-ordination Committees, said the health department official, requesting anonymity.

The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), or Heartmate II, is surgically inserted between the chest and upper abdomen and is powered by a battery. The titanium device is connected to a monitor worn outside the body that controls the blood flow.

There was not any hectic activity in Shamsabad Police Station till 3 PM yesterday. Suddenly police vehicles brought Congress M.P.’s arrested from the camp office of CM Shamsabad Police station.

Mr. Poonam Prabhakar, MP told the newsmen that when they went to the camp office of the CM to meet him. They were arrested and shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Airport Police Station at Shamsabad. He said that they are demanding their right but it is not being given. At 7 p.m. they were shifted to the residence of Dr. K. Keshava Rao. He asked the CM to resolve Telangana issue soon.

Two killed in Nepal landslide, five Indians missing

At least two people were killed and over a dozen, including five Indians, were reported missing when five vehicles were hit by a landslide on a highway in Nepal Sunday night, police said Monday.

The landslide occurred along the Mechi highway near Ilam in eastern Nepal, the myrepublica.com website reported.

Two bodies have been found and search for the rest is on. Police said one body was identified.

The second is of a woman, who was yet to be identified. Both were found 100 metres below the hilly road Monday morning, police said.

Cauvery row: Protests continue in Karnataka for second day

Protests rocked the Cauvery river basin district of Karnataka for the second day on Monday over release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu with police taking about 100 people into custody after they squatted on tracks and detained the Mysore-Shirdi express at Gejjalagere village.

People in Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts also protested against the release of water in line with a Supreme Court directive.

The government began releasing water from Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams early on Sunday to ensure flow of 9,000 cusecs of water to the neighbouring state.

US drone strike kills 3 in Pakistan’s tribal regio

At least three suspected militants were killed on Monday in a US drone strike in the lawless North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan, security officials said.

The CIA-operated spy planes fired four missiles at a vehicle carrying militants, the security officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

Three suspected militants were killed instantly. The attack took place in Khaider Khel area of Mir Ali district, 30 km from Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency.

US and Afghan officials consider the area a stronghold of Taliban and Al Qaeda elements.

Declared dead, militant arrested 20 years later

A Sikh militant, who was declared dead 20 years ago, was arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police, an official said Monday.

The militant has been identified as Sukhwinder alias Sukkha.

Police said on the basis of information, raids were conducted in various areas of Punjab, Haryana, Gurgaon, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

“The militant had taken on another name to mislead authorities. He was arrested two days ago,” a police official said.

CAG not exceeding mandate, rules apex court

The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) that contended the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) was not mandated to go into policy decisions of the government to arrive at presumptive losses.

The PIL petitioner, economist Dr Rakesh Gupta contended that the CAG exceeded the brief of constitutional mandate by commenting on policy choices of the government in arriving at presumptive losses running into lakhs of crores of rupees in reports on civil aviation, the power sector and the allocation of coal blocks.

Actress Lindsay Lohan assaulted inside hotel room

Actress Lindsay Lohan was reportedly assaulted by a man inside a hotel room here.

She told police that she was assaulted inside W Hotel here early Sunday morning by Christian Labella, 25, a man she met at Manhattan nightclub 1Oak.

According to Lohan, Labella had taken photos of her on his cell phone while they were hanging out at the hotel with a couple of her friends in her 15th floor room. When she saw the photos on his phone, she confronted him and took his phone.

Lohan said Labella then threw her on the bed, causing scratches, and even punched her.

Five foreign militants killed in Kashmir

Five separatist militants, all from Pakistan, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Monday, police said.

“Five militants have been killed in this encounter. All of them belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group,” a senior police officer told IANS.

The officer said all the slain guerrillas were foreigners belonging to Pakistan.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the encounter site.

ICSE reduces examination fee for Class X and Class XII

The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations, which runs around 2000 schools across the country, has decided to reduce its examination fee for Class X and Class XII students by over 50 per cent from next year.

“We have decided to reduce examination fees from Rs 2100 to Rs 1000 this time,” said CISCE chairman Jose Aikara.

“The Council had increased the examination fees as it required funds for various purposes. The Council has decided to cut the amount from next year for the benefit of students,” he said on the sideline of a function here.

Six die after drinking illicit liquor

Six persons died and five others were taken ill after drinking illicit liquor at a village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, official sources said monday.

The victims drank the liquor in Neknampur village under Deoria police station area of the district last night, Sub-divisional officer, West, Kundan Kumar said.

Four of those taken ill were admitted to the primary health centre and another to the Srikrishna Medical College and Hospital at Muzaffarpur, he said.

Senior officials were at the spot.

ASI arrested for taking bribe

The vigilance bureau monday arrested an assistant sub-inspector of police from Runni Saidpur police station in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district for taking a bribe of Rs. 5,000, official sources said.

Acting on a complaint, a vigilance team laid a trap and caught the ASI Rampukar Safi taking the money from a person named Nandubhai Patel of Manichowk locality, the sources said.

The ASI had demanded the bribe for arresting an accused in a case, they said. The bribe was recovered from Safi, the sources said.

Kingfisher flights axed due to engineers strike

Kingfisher Airlines faced fresh turbulence with about two dozen flights being cancelled following a strike by maintenance engineers, an airport official said Monday.

Aircraft maintenance engineers, whose aircraft airworthiness clearance is mandatory for any flight to take off, struck work suddenly Sunday night over non-payment of salaries and dues for almost six months.

A Kingfisher spokesperson confirmed the development and said: “They have been threatening, and even manhandling the employees who are reporting to work as usual.”

Arvind Kejriwal today played down criticism by Anna Hazare of his anti-corruption group getting into politics, saying there was no fight between the two and they were combating graft through different routes.

Kejriwal, who met Hazare for the first time after they split on the question of forming a political party, said, “We came to meet him as he is in Delhi. We have a relationship. There is no fight between us. He himself has said the goal is same though the paths are different”.
