Bhagat Singh’s statue to be placed in Lahore

A Pakistani institute that works for promotion of peace with India has welcomed the decision to rename a city centre in Lahore after Bhagat Singh, and said it plans to install a statue of the martyr there.

“This is a victory for people of all religions, and activists who had been rallying for this cause since long,” the Institute for Peace and Secular Studies (IPSS) was quoted as saying by the Daily Times.

The IPSS plans to place a statue of Bhagat Singh with a plaque displaying his poetry and biography at the newly named Bhagat Singh Chowk, it said.

Gadkari files defamation case against Digvijay Singh

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari Monday filed a defamation case against Congress leader Digvijay Singh for dragging his name into alleged irregularities in coal block allocation.

Gadkari appeared in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhesh Kumar to file the case.

According to the complaint, Digvijay Singh named him in the allocation of coal blocks to a company belonging to BJP’s Rajya Sabha member Ajay Sancheti. Sancheti has been alleged to be Gadkari’s close associate.

Teacher jailed for sex with teenaged girl

A music teacher in a British college has been banned for life from teaching and jailed for 14 months after he had secret sex sessions at his institute with a 16-year-old girl.

David Livesey, 27, from Prenton, Merseyside, sparked the affair with a suggestive comment on a photo of the girl in a prom dress on a social networking site, the Daily Express reported.

The Liverpool crown court heard that the man had an 11-month relationship with the girl, now aged 18, and sex sessions at St. John Plessington College, Wirral.

IAS officer arrested in UP for molesting woman on train

A senior Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh government was Monday arrested for molesting a woman on board the Lucknow Mail, police said.

The arrest was made by the Railway Police after the woman, who was on board the Lucknow Mail train, lodged a formal complaint on arrival in Lucknow, according to police.

Inspector General of Police (Railways) Ashutosh Pandey confirmed to IANS that senior IAS officer Shashi Bhushan was arrested on charges of molestation.

Five militants killed in Kashmir

Five separatist militants, all from Pakistan, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Monday, police said.

“Five militants have been killed in this encounter. All of them belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group,” a senior police officer said.

The officer said all the slain guerrillas were foreigners belonging to Pakistan.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the encounter site.
