Students Teargassed In Osmania Campus

The Telangana bandh called to protest against the arrests of pro-activists of separate state during the “Sagara Haram” march on Sunday received a mixed response on Monday.

The bandh call was given by the Student JACs of Osmania University and Kakatiya University and supported by the TJAC besides some political parties to condemn the police high-handedness and unprovoked detention of scores of separatists who were on their way to participate in the march.

Suspension of IPS Sanjiv Bhatt revoked

On the recommendation of the Union home ministry, the Gujarat government on Monday revoked suspension of IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in one of three cases against him.

“However, as Bhatt has also been put under suspension in two other cases, he will remain under suspension till those cases are pending,” said state’s principal secretary (Home) S K Nanda.

French secret agent shot dead Gaddafi on Sarkozy’s order: media report

A French secret serviceman shot dead Libya’s former strongman Col Muammar Gaddafi and not a lynch mob of rebels as he lay trapped and cornered in a sewage pipe in his home town of Sirte, The Daily Mail reported.
The French secret agent is said to have infiltrated a violent mob which had encircled the Libyan leader on October 20, 2011, in a sewage pipe in his home town, and shot him in the head, the newspaper report says.

Errabeli wants T-MPs to protest before Sonia’s residence

Telangana TDP Forum convenor Errabelli Dayakar Rao has demanded that the Congress MPs of the region stage dharna in front of AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s residence if they were really sincere on Telangana statehood.

Speaking to the media, Dayakar Rao alleged that the Congress leaders were misguiding the Telangana people on formation of separate Telangana State. He announced that the TDP would support a Telangana Bill if it was introduced in Parliament.

Congress MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao on Monday denied the allegations that Seemandhra leaders were obstructing the formation of Telangana formation.

Talking to reporters here, Sambasiva Rao said that the leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema region were just expressing their opinion that they were against the bifurcation of the State. Congress advocates patience on Telangana issue

Congress today advocated “patience and peace” on Telangana saying the issues related to separate statehood demand were “contentious” and required engagement of all stakeholders in Andhra Pradesh.

Noting that he understands the “emotion and anxiety” involved in Telangana, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said these are “contentious” issues for which there are “no easy solution”.

Airtel moves High Court against DoT on 3G roaming

Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel Monday moved the Delhi High Court against the Department of Telecommunication’s (DoT) notice asking telecom firms to stop intra-circle 3G roaming services.

In its petition, Bharti Airtel said the “decision of DoT is against the public interest as it adversely affects the interest of the customers and the subscribers who are benefiting from the 3G arrangements.”

Rupee at over 5-mth high, closes at 52.40 against dollar

The rupee on Monday staged a strong recovery by washing out initial losses to close 45 paise higher at 52.40, an over five-month high, on sustained capital inflows and heavy dollar sales by exporters and banks.

A weak performance by the American currency in overseas markets also helped the rupee rise for the third straight day, said forex dealers.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local unit resumed lower at 53.00 a dollar compared to last Friday’s close of 52.85.

BJP leader LK Advani on Monday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was critical of FDI in retail during the NDA rule and had told the Federation of Maharashtra Traders in 2002 that the government had no proposal to invite such investment.

“God help this country”, the Supreme Court observed on Monday, as it chided the Government on the issue of providing accommodation in the national capital to members of tribunals.

Trinamool Congress(TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee, who organised a rally at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday days after pulling out of the government and withdrawing support to UPA, may join opposition NDA, NCP general secretary and MP Tariq Anwar said here.

Egypt’s ex-presidential candidate referred to criminal court

Ahmed Shafiq, who has lost Egypt’s first democratically-held presidential elections to President Mohamed Morsi, was referred to a criminal court along with ten other Aviation ministry officials over alleged charges of profiteering and seizing public funds.

The referral petition said the defendants had agreed to allocate ministry-owned lands to private firms without calling for tenders as stipulated by the law.

Moscow court postpones Pussy Riot appeal

A Russian court today postponed the appeal of three members of jailed rock band Pussy Riot until October 10 after one group member fired her lawyers.

The three performers were sentenced in August to two years in prison for hooliganism for performing a “punk prayer” against President Vladimir Putin at Moscow’s main cathedral.

Band member Yekaterina Samutsevich announced at the opening of the hearing that she has fired her three lawyers over an unspecified disagreement. Samutsevich said she found another lawyer but had failed to sign a contract.

Libya attack a terror assault: US intelligence

The US intelligence has revised its assessment of the attack on the consulate in Libya that killed ambassador Christopher Stevens, saying it now believes it was a deliberate terrorist assault, CNN reported.

In a statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence sought to explain how it has revised its view of the Sep 11 attack on the diplomatic post that killed Stevens and three others.

The assessment moves away from the initial belief that the Benghazi attack began spontaneously following a protest over an anti-Muslim film.

Australian ex-TV host jailed for child porn

A former Australian TV personality has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for watching child pornography.

Andy Muirhead, 36, the former presenter of the ABC TV show Collectors, pleaded guilty in Tasmania’s Supreme Court to two counts of accessing child porn via internet and one charge of possessing child exploitation material, The Australian reported.

The court was told that Muirhead had viewed thousand of images over 16 months, at times on a daily basis. Some were described as “sadistic” and featured children as young as three.
