IAF to phase out MiG-27 combat planes by 2017

Concerned over recurring problems in MiG-27 combat aircraft engines, Indian Air Force is planning to phase out these Russian-origin planes by 2017.

IAF operates about 80 (four squadrons) of these aircraft in its fleet and due to the recurring problems in their engines, it had to ground all of them after a crash about two years ago.

“We are planning to phase out the MiG-27s, of which around 80 are still in service, by the year 2017,” senior IAF officials told a news agency here.

Govt will not roll back decision to allow FDI in retail: Sharma

Unfazed by the strong opposition to allowing FDI in retail even from some allies, the government today made it clear that the decision will not be rolled back as it is in the interest of farmers and consumers.

Ahmadinejad’s cameraman seeks asylum in US: report

A cameraman who accompanied Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the UN General Assembly here has stayed back and applied for an asylum in the US over fears of being persecuted in his home country, a media report said today.

New York City-based lawyer Paul O’Dwyer, who is working with US authorities on behalf of Hassan Golkanbhan, the cameraman who accompanied Ahmadinejad, said his client is afraid of persecution because of his perceived political
beliefs, CNN reported.

HC commutes life-term of a man who killed his wife

The Bombay High Court has commuted life-term of a man who killed his wife, to eight years, observing that the crime was committed on the spur of the moment after he saw his wife in a compromising position with
another man.

A division bench of Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode acquitted Vishwanath Shelar under the serious charge of murder and instead convicted him for culpable homicide and sentenced him to eight years in jail.

Shelar who has already spent over eight years pending his trial will now be released.

Puran Puri Recipe

Ingredients:
Chana Dal – 1 kg
Ghee – 2 kgs
Almonds – 1/2 kg, finely ground
Saffron – 1 tsp, soaked in milk and ground
Sugar – 3 kgs
Semolina – 1 kg
A round baking tin of 8 inch diameter

Method:
1. Boil the dal and strain through a cloth.
2. Squeeze out all the water and mash well.
3. Heat half the ghee in a large pan and fry the dal till it turns brown and the ghee separates.
4. Drain out the extra ghee.
5. Add ground almonds, saffron and sugar.
6. Cook to make a mixture that is pliable but neither too soft nor too dry. (this is called Puran)

Saudi beheads Syrian for drug smuggling

Saudi Arabia today beheaded a Syrian for drug smuggling, the interior ministry announced in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

Abdulrahman al-Sweidan was “arrested as he was attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotic pills into the
kingdom,” SPA reported. He was beheaded by sword in the northern region of Jawf.

That brings to 61 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on
official reports.

Amnesty International says 79 people were put to death in the Gulf kingdom last year.

1/2 chicken breasts, skinned and boned

1 cup low sodium chicken broth

Indo-US nuclear safety summit begins Oct 11

The American Nuclear Society will mark the fourth anniversary of the Indo-US nuclear deal with a nuclear safety summit here next week.

The second edition of Indo-US Nuclear Energy Safety Summit, scheduled Oct 11-12, will educate nuclear plant officials to better communicate with the people with lessons from expert communicators, including Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore.

Skeleton wearing jeans, t-shirt found in Darjeeling

A skeleton wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt was found in Kalimpong area of Darjeeling district on Tuesday, the police said.

Local people found the skeleton inside a jungle near Lower Bang bustee close to a stream and informed the police.

A pen was attached to the t-shirt while a bone of one of the skeleton’s legs was broken, the sources said.

The gender of the skeleton was yet to be ascertained, the sources said, adding that it was being sent to Kolkata for forensic examination.
