CM reviews progress of COP-11

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday reviewed the progress of the COP-11 being held in Hyderabad and also the advantages Andhra Pradesh have from the biodiversity conference.

The Chief Minister enquired from various departments the steps being taken by Andhra Pradesh in protecting the Biodiversity. Officials told the Chief Minister as on Thursday, 1220 delegates from 164 countries are participating in the Biodiversity meet and it is going on successfully and all the international delegates are happy about the arrangements.

No differences within BJP on PM candidate: MP CM

Influential BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said the party would announce its prime ministerial candidate at an appropriate time as he ruled out any differences in the party on the issue.

Responding to questions, Chouhan said that the name of prime ministerial candidate would be announced at an appropriate time before the next general elections.

Chouhan, who is here on an official visit, said he has no plans to move to the center and intends to stay in Madhya Pradesh and focus his entire energy on its inclusive growth.

Court orders 3rd arrest of ex-Philippine president

The Philippine anti-graft court on Thursday ordered the arrest of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in the third corruption investigation against her, this one accusing her of misusing USD 8.8 million in state lottery funds during her last years in office.

Arroyo’s lawyers questioned the charges during oral arguments, and the court said it would take a second look.

Car bomb kills 5 in Baghdad: Iraqi officials

Iraqi police and health officials say a car bomb explosion in western Baghdad has killed five people and wounded 13.

Two police officers say the parked car bomb went off this morning in the upscale Mansour district but narrowly missed a passing convoy of employees working for a foreign security company.

They say three policemen were among those wounded in the attack. The police could not immediately provide the name of the security company.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as the new chief of Al Qaeda, may be in Pakistan, says a new book.

Zawahiri, an Egyptian cleric, became the new Al Qaeda chief after the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad town May 2 last year.

Imtiaz Gul, a Pakistani defence and security analyst, in his book “Pakistan: Before and After Osama” says: “Just as the search for bin Laden has been a pre-occupation for the past decade, the whereabouts of Zawahiri are now likely to engage the US and Pakistan intelligence.”

26/11 attacks: Abu Jundal to be produced before NIA court on Oct 8

The 26/11 key handler and LeT terrorist Abu Jundal was on Thursday remanded in judicial custody by a Delhi court after the Mumbai ATS produced him before it saying he was no longer wanted for his interrogation in cases registered against him in Maharashtra.

Jundal was produced before chief metropolitan magistrate Vidya Parkash by the Mumbai ATS and was sent to Tihar jail.

World Series Hockey from Dec 15

The second edition of the World Series Hockey is to be held from Dec 15 to Jan 20 with a total of 45 matches.

The tournament, to be played over five weeks, will have 14 matches less than the last edition played from Feb 29 to April 2.

Importantly, the number of teams have been reduced to seven from eight with the Chandigarh Comets and first edition champions Sher-e-Punjab uniting into one Punjab team.

Kayani backs Balochistan’s solution within Pak con

Amidst growing criticism of the role of the military and security agencies in Balochistan, Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has said his force will “fully back” any solution to the problems of the restive province that are within the country’s Constitution.

“The army will fully back any solution under the Constitution of Pakistan,” Kayani was quoted as saying in a rare public statement on the situation in Balochistan, which has been rocked by militant and sectarian violence for the past few years.

Police on Thursday cane-charged Congress workers and lobbed teargas shells when they tried to gherao Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s residence here.

Police used force to stop a large number of Congress workers, led by state unit president Kantilal Bhuria and leader of opposition Ajay Singh, when they were seen trying to break the barricades erected by police to prevent them from moving towards Chouhan’s residence.

Cipla`s anti-malaria drug receives WHO pre-qualification

Drug firm Cipla today said an anti-malarial drug developed by Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) has received pre-qualification from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The Mumbai-headquartered firm is manufacturing the fixed dose combination drug of Artesunate and Mefloquine (ASMQ FDC) under a technology transfer agreement with Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi).

This Cipla-manufactured ASMQ FDC is the first artesunate-mefloquine FDC to be prequalified by WHO and is recommended for the treatment of malaria, Cipla said in a statement.

Huge quantity of explosives seized in AP

Two persons were held after a huge cache of explosives was seized from their van near Rajampeta mandal of Kadapa district on Thursday, police said here.

About 2,000 gelatin sticks, 1,250 kg ammonium nitrate packed in 25 bags and 3,000 metre of fuse wire were seized from a van going from Kondapur to Chittoor during a routine checking exercise, Rajampeta rural police inspector Venkateswarlu said.

There were two persons in the van at the time of seizure who have been taken into custody, he said.

Further investigation was on, he added.

Granite scam: Firm of Alagiri’s son raided

As part of the ongoing probe into the multi-crore illegal granite quarrying scam in Madurai, police on Thursday raided the film production company of Union Minister MK Alagiri’s son, Durai Dayanidhi, an accused in the case.

The police team from Madurai searched the premises of Dayanidhi’s cinema company here for nearly an hour, sources said without elaborating.

Dayanidhi, for whom a special police team was on the lookout, and nine others are facing charges that companies owned by them mined sand and granite without permission.

Actor R. Madhavan has through a hard-hitting video joined hands with animal rights organisation PETA to expose the meat, egg and dairy industry cruelty, and sought to stop killing of animals.

The actor has shot the video “Glass Walls” for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for the World Animal Day Thursday and Vegetarian Awareness Month (October).

“I’m Madhavan, and I’m a vegetarian. When you see what goes on inside a slaughterhouse, I think you’ll lose your appetite for animal flesh, too,” Madhavan says in the video.

US crackdown on online fraud schemes from India

The US today cracked down on several online fraud schemes, mainly operating from India, that duped consumers into paying to clean their computers of bogus virus infections.

At the request of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a US District Court Judge ordered a halt to six alleged tech support scams pending further hearings, and has frozen their assets.
