Courts to become paperless: Khurshid

A move was afoot to computerise all courts across the country and do away with paper work which occupies a lot of space, Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said here on Thursday.

“Paperless courts would go a long way in achieving the objectives of the National Mission for Delivery of Justice. Already, there are at least 10 courts in Delhi where judges do not have to carry voluminous records to their homes. Tiny pen drives have replaced huge, bulky folders in these courts”, he told reporters.

Separatist guerrillas Thursday lobbed a grenade at a hotel wounding four paramilitary personnel, two of them seriously, in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The attack on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) took place in the northern town of Sopore.

A police officer said the guerrillas targeted the battalion headquarters of 179 battalion of CRPF near the main bus stand in the heart of the town, 54 km from here.

“The grenade exploded injuring four CRPF jawans. They were immediately evacuated to hospital. The condition of two is serious,” the officer told IANS.

PIL in SC seeking SIT probe in coalgate

Members of civil society including former CEC N Gopalaswami, ex-Navy chief L Ramdas and former Cabinet Secretary TSR Subramanian on Thursday approached the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into the coal block allocations scam.

They have filed a joint PIL along with other retired bureaucrats and NGO Common Cause pleading the apex court to quash the entire allocation of coal blocks to private companies made by the Centre from 1993 onwards.

Short film to create awareness on breast cancer

A 16-minute short film ‘We Can Defeat Breast Cancer’ is being launched by the NGO, Forum for Breast Cancer Protection at the FICCI auditorium here Oct 7 (Sunday).

The main aim of the film is to educate women on breast cancer and to give them simple tips on how to detect the symptoms of the disease.

The 16-minute film demonstrates the technique of breast examination by self as well as through mammography.

India and Bangladesh Thursday expressed concern over the growing menace of synthetic drugs and pharmaceutical narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances being siphoned off for abuse, and trafficked across their borders.

The two countries vowed to make sustained efforts to curb contraband smuggling across their international borders.

At a bilateral meeting of the chiefs of their respective narcotics control agencies here, the two sides agreed to share intelligence on drug trafficking and adopt a coordinated strategy to prevent cross-border smuggling.

Wife of Kingfisher employee commits suicide over salary woes

The wife of an employee of crisis- ridden Kingfisher airlines today allegedly committed suicide, apparently depressed over financial stress due to non-payment of salary to her husband.

Pictorial representationSusmita Chakarvarti (45), the wife of Manas Chakarvarti who is a ground staff in Kingfisher Airlines, was found hanging from the ceiling in her DDA flat in south-west Delhi’s Manglapuri at around 1:30 PM.

Women can now ride Yamaha scooters assembled only by women, a company official said Thursday.

India Yamaha Motor has hired a workforce of 200 women at its assembly line in Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh for scooters developed for women.

“Through this unique initiative, a first in Yamaha’s history, we are not just creating employment opportunities for young women recruits but also giving them classroom and on-the-job training,” said Roy Kurian, national business head, India Yamaha Motor.

Briton faces jail for sex in taxi in Dubai

A British woman in Dubai is facing up to three-and-a-half years in prison, if convicted, after being accused of romping naked in the back of a taxi in the Muslim emirate.

Expat Becky Blake, 29, appeared in the court Wednesday with Irish welder Conor McRedmond, 28, with whom she is accused of having sex after a 10-hour booze binge, The Sun reported.

Both have spent five days in jail in Dubai, where sex outside marriage is strictly prohibited, before being released on bail. They were charged with indecency and drinking offences.

2 killed as lorry hits motorbike

Two persons were killed in a ghastly road accident in this district on Thursday.
According to the information, a lorry dashed against a motorcycle near Orumbadu crossroads under Obulavaripalle mandal in the morning.

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal has called on Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and submitted a ten-page report on the Telangana March and the current political situation in the State.

Girl raped, Lover Stabbed In Chittoor

A young couple visiting the Kaigal waterfall under the Byreddipalli mandal of the district was attacked and grievously injured by unidentified persons on Thursday.
