Dengue cases cross 100 mark in Delhi

With 18 more patients testing positive for dengue in the capital on Thursday, the number of cases has crossed the century-mark to touch 116.

All the 12 zones, except West zone, in the jurisdiction of South, North and East Delhi Municipalities recorded dengue cases, statements issued by civic bodies said. However, no deaths were reported today.

Out of the 116 cases, three have originated from outside the capital. A nine-year-old girl had died in the capital last Friday due to dengue.

Wife of Kingfisher employee commits suicide

The wife of an employee of crisis-ridden Kingfisher Airlines on Thursday allegedly committed suicide, apparently depressed over financial stress due to non-payment of salary to her husband.

Susmita Chakarvarti (45), the wife of Manas Chakarvarti who is a ground staff in Kingfisher Airlines, was found hanging from the ceiling in her DDA flat in south-west Delhi’s Manglapuri at around 1:30 pm.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Sonakshi befriends Simba

Sonakshi Sinha found a furry friend in Simba, a lovable Rottweiler puppy, while shooting in Patiala for her forthcoming Diwali release “Son of Sardaar” (SOS).

The actress spent most of her free time playing and taking care of Simba.

“There was a place close to our shooting location where Rottweiler puppies were bred.

Sonakshi is a dog lover. In fact she even had a pug earlier. When she saw this puppy in Patiala, she loved him so much that she immediately developed a special connection with him and she named the puppy Simba,” said a source from the production team.

Syrian crisis may spill over: UN chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said he is alarmed by the escalating tensions along the Syrian-Turkish border and warned that the Syrian crisis may spill over into neighbouring countries.

“As the situation inside Syria deteriorates yet further – including the atrocious terrorist bombings in Aleppo this week which killed dozens of people including civilians – the risks of regional conflict and the threat to international peace and security are also increasing,” Ban was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

US blacklists new alias of Al Qaeda-linked outfit

The US State Department has blacklisted the outfit Ansar al-Shari’a, which it said was a “new alias” of the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

The move bars American citizens from doing business with or providing support to the group, and freezes all of its assets under US jurisdiction, Xinhua reported.

A UN sanctions committee also added the outfit to its list Thursday, a move that subjects the group to a worldwide assets freeze, a travel ban and an arms embargo, the department said.

Spaniard held with 140 kg of explosives

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Spain for plotting to blow up a university with 140 kg of explosives, Xinhua reported.

The man, identified as Jose Manuel M.S. and hailing from Palma de Mallorca in eastern Spain, planned to attack the University of the Balearic Islands.

Police said the man wrote about his hatred for society in diaries and a blog.

He allegedly professed a special hatred for university students, which was why he chose to attack the university, police said.

SC refuses interim bail to Malegaon blast accused Purohit, others

The Supreme Court today refused to grant interim bail to ex-Army officer Shrikant Prasad Purohit, Pragya Thakur and other accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

A bench of justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad refused to grant any interim relief after senior advocate U R Lalit appearing for the accused contended they have been behind bars for four years and their petitions are not being heard by the apex court.

“We will not give interim bail at this stage,” the bench said.

The 88-year-old DMK leader, who had announced a human chain protest in black attire against the “anti-people policies” of the Jayalalithaa government tomorrow but later changed it to a door-to-door pamphlet distribution campaign, said the police had not permitted the originally planned protest.

Two Killed As Lorry Hits Motorbike
