Christian children accused of insulting Islam, freed

A 9 and a 10 year-old Egyptian Christian children were released by an Egyptian Court.

Both were accused of insulting Islam by allegedly urinating on a paper containing verses of the Quran.

According to an AFP report, the prosecutor Abdul Maguid Mahmoud took the decision because the accused are minor.

Nabil Naji Rizq, 10, and Mina Nadi Faraj, 9, were to have been held and questioned for a week at a juvenile facility.

Court sentences five of family to death for honour killing

A Delhi Court Friday awarded death sentence to five members of a family convicted earlier for killing a young couple to death in 2010 in the name of honour.

Additional Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar Singhal sentenced to death the parents of the girl, Suraj and Maya, uncle Om Prakash, aunt Khusboo and brother Sanjeev.

Asha, 19, was beaten, and then electrocuted along with her 20-year-old boyfriend Yogesh.

The family reportedly did not want the two to marry because the boy was from a lower caste.

Supreme Court rejects Jagan’s bail plea

In a major setback to YSR Congress Party leader Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, the Supreme court Friday declined to grant him bail in the disproportionate assets case

While declining to grant bail, the apex court bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam rejected the petition, saying: “You will have to wait.”

The rejection of the bail plea came after Additional Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran told the court that Jaganmohan was involved “in very serious economic offences which were unparalleled”.

Bihar observes Dolphin Day

Bihar observed Dolphin Day Friday to raise awareness about conservation of the Ganga river dolphin declared as India’s national aquatic animal.

“Dolphin Day is a step towards conserving the Ganga river dolphin and would be observed every year on Oct 5,” Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said at a workshop here.

“It is a part of the Wildlife Week being observed in Bihar (Oct 2-8),” he added.

Natarajan says no to missile firing range in Andamans

The environment ministry has rejected an Indian Navy proposal to test fire missiles at the Tillachang sanctuary in the Andaman and Nicobar islands as a firing range would destroy the habitat of the megapode, an endangered ground bird species.

“The matter came up during the meeting of the National Board for Wildlife last month and many non-official members raised concern about it. I decided yesterday (Thursday) that the range should not come in that area,” Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here Friday.

“Kingfisher must satisfy DGCA before resuming ops”

As Kingfisher Airlines extended its partial lockout by a week till October 12, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said on Friday the debt-ridden company will have to satisfy airline regulator DGCA on safety before it gets permission to fly again.

SIT suffers setback as court refuses to cancel Yaser and Jaber’s bail

In a major setback to SIT, the 8th additional Metropolitan Session Judge of Nampally Criminal Court has dismissed the petition filed by SIT to cancel bail of two sons of Maulana Mohammed Naseeruddin, president Wahdat-e-Islami, Mohammed Muqeemuddin Yaser and Baleeghuddin Jaber.

In September the Indore court had acquitted Yasser and Jaber in criminal conspiracy case.

Woman among four arrested for attack on Brar

Four people, including a 40-year-old woman, have been arrested for the assassination attempt on Lt Gen (Retd) K.S. Brar, who led the Indian Army operation into the Golden Temple at Amritsar in Punjab in June 1984, police here said.

Brar, who was on the hit-list of Sikh militant groups, was on a private visit to London when he was viciously attacked on the evening of Sep 30. The retired general and his wife Meena returned to India Oct 3.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 16 runs to reach the final of the World Twenty20 tournament here Sunday.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene (42) steered Sri Lanka to a competitive 139 for four on a difficult surface and then the bowlers came up with a brilliant effort to limit Pakistan to 123 for seven in the first semifinal here.

The inclusion of left-arm spinner Rangana Herath (3/25) in the playing eleven worked wonderfully for the hosts with other significant contributions coming from speedsters Lasith Malinga (0/19) and Angelo Matthews (2/27).

India tests Dhanush ballistic missile

India Friday tested its nuclear-capable ballistic missile Dhanush from a naval ship in the Bay of Bengal in Odisha, an official said.

The missile was fired from a naval ship somewhere between Puri and Visakhapatnam as part of the training exercise of the Indian Navy.

“The test was successful,” Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesperson Ravi Kumar Gupta told IANS.

Dhanush is a naval version of the nuclear-capable ballistic missile Prithvi. It has a range of 350 km.

The former replied, ‘Allah is sufficient as a witness.’ The second said, ‘I want a surety.’ The former replied, ‘Allah is sufficient as a surety.’ The second said, ‘You are right,’ and lent him the money for a certain period. The debtor went across the sea. When he finished his job, he searched for a conveyance so that he might reach in time for the repayment of the debt, but he could not find any.

Samsung Electronics estimates record operating profit

Samsung Electronics estimated Friday its fresh record quarterly high of operating profit for the third quarter at $7.29 billion.

At 8.1 trillion won or $7.29 billion, the preliminary operating profit estimated by Samsung in the July-September period was up 90.59 percent from a year earlier, topping the previous record high of 6.72 trillion won tallied in the prior quarter, reported Xinhua.

Sales were estimated at 52 trillion won in the three months ending Sep 30, up 26 percent from a year before. The figure was up 9.24 percent from three months earlier.

Twelve-year-old Brit schoolgirl has more IQ than Einstein

With an IQ of 162, a 12-year-old schoolgirl in UK has been rated brainier than even Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

Olivia Manning, from Liverpool, has been accepted into Mensa, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world after she got a whopping score of 162 in an Intelligence test.

Her score is not only two points better than German genius Einstein and physicist Hawking, it puts her in the top one per cent of intelligent people in the world, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

Being honoured with entry into Mensa means she will join a network of brains from across the globe.

Nigeria to double cocoa production by 2015

Nigeria will double its production of cocoa, one of its major export crops, from 250,000 to 500,000 metric tonnes by 2015, Minister of Agriculture Akinwumi Adesina said.

Adesina told an audience at the First International Cocoa Conference held in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria, that 3.6 million hybrid cocoa pods would be distributed free to cocoa farmers in the country to meet the target, reported Xinhua.

The new hybrid cocoa pods were developed by Nigerian researchers for local farmers.

Bank of Japan keeps key rate unchanged

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) Friday decided to keep the monetary policy unchanged.

The BOJ’s Policy Board voted unanimously, to keep the key short-term interest rate at around zero to 0.1 percent and decided to keep the size of its asset purchase program at the current 80 trillion yen, after expanding the fund by 10 trillion yen at the previous meeting Sep 19, reported Xinhua.

The BOJ’s assessment on domestic economy is “leveling off more or less”, as the exports and industrial production weaken by strong yen and economic troubles in Europe.

Fresh draft of Swiss letter submitted to Pakistan court

The Pakistani government Friday submitted to the Supreme Court a fresh draft of a letter that has to be sent to Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. However, the court said the draft was not in the spirit of its order.

Federal Law Minister Farooq H. Naek presented the amended draft of the letter to be sent to Swiss authorities when the Supreme Court resumed the hearing in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) implementation case, reported Dawn.

A five-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the case.
