Bihar observes Dolphin Day

Bihar observed Dolphin Day Friday to raise awareness about conservation of the Ganga river dolphin declared as India’s national aquatic animal.

“Dolphin Day is a step towards conserving the Ganga river dolphin and would be observed every year on Oct 5,” Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said at a workshop here.

“It is a part of the Wildlife Week being observed in Bihar (Oct 2-8),” he added.

`Khiladi 786` is my comeback as a `Khiladi`: Akshay Kumar

After a gap of 12 years, actor Akshay Kumar, is all set to stage his comeback as Bollywood`s original `Khiladi` in yet another film from the action-comedy series, titled as `Khiladi 786`.

After string of films in the `Khiladi` series, comprising Khiladi (1992), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (93), Sabse Bada Khiladi (95), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (96), Mr and Mrs Khiladi (97), International Khiladi (99) and Khiladi 420 (2000), the 45-year-old star is eager to reclaim the tag with the film, which releases on December 7 this year.

MPs to float forum to end stigma against leprosy affected

Indian MPs would soon float a forum to advocate elimination of stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy.

“Next parliament session, we will float a forum to end leprosy and advocate the rights of persons affected by the disease,” Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi said at an international symposium on leprosy and human rights in Asia.

Also supporting the cause were Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Lok Sabha member D Purandeshwari and Congress Lok Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh Madhu Goud Yakshi.

`Unhygienic` Britons are world`s worst flu-spreaders

Britons take fewer basic hygiene precautions like washing hands and sneezing into a tissue against catching flu than people in other countries, a new international study has found.

The survey by Harvard School of Public Health, showed that just one in five cavalier Brits tried to keep away from people with flu-like symptoms and fewer avoided shopping centres or sporting events during the flu season.

Researchers carried out surveys in the UK, the US, Argentina, Japan and Mexico soon after the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, the `Daily Mail` reported.

Sleuths of the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) today trapped a Deputy Commercial Tax Officer and a senior Assistant in Vijayawada district of Andhra Pradesh for accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000.

M V Ch Acharyulu Dy Commercial Tax Officer (VAT), Vijayawada-1 was caught red handed by the ACB officials when
he demanded and received the amount from the complainant for doing an official favour of releasing copper wire bundles belonging to Mahavir Company, Vijayawada, which were seized by the DCTO (VAT).

Government did not pay Sonia’s bills: PMO

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s office Friday denied the government paid the travel and medical bills of UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, describing as “untrue and misleading” the Rs.1,880-crore ($363 million) figure taken by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The clarification from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) came after Modi raised the issue of Gandhi’s foreign travel since 2004, saying these had been borne by the government.

“The PMO would like to put on record that the government has incurred no expenses on UPA chairperson’s visits abroad,” the PMO said in a statement.

Double bombing near Shiite mosque kills 5 in Iraq

Iraqi officials say a double bombing near a Shiite mosque in Baghdad has killed five people, including four worshippers.

Police say that the bombs went off outside the al-Sadrein mosque and at a nearby police checkpoint as noon prayers ended today in the mostly Shiite neighbourhood of Zafaraniyah in southeastern Baghdad.

They say at least 26 worshippers were wounded.

A medical official in a nearby hospital confirms the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of
anonymity because they are not authorised to talk to the media.

Fake ATM card racket busted in Guj; five arrested

Five persons were arrested after a large number of fake debit and credit cards were seized from them at Amit Nagar circle in Kareli Bagh area here, police said today.

The five accused are from Mumbai and were in Vadodara for the last couple of days, police said Police seized 546 blank ATM cards, 167 debit cards, a car and other materials including swiping writer, electronic card system printer and a laptop worth around Rs six lakh from these persons last evening, city police commissioner Satish
Sharma told PTI.

Woman gives birth in ambulance

A woman gave birth to a child in an ambulance after a government primary health centre at Shamli town refused to admit her citing lack of doctors.

The incident occurred last evening when one Irfan brought his pregnant wife to a primary health centre after she went
into labour.

She was referred to the district hospital due to non-availability of doctors.

However, she gave birth to the child on the way.

A probe has been ordered into the incident and strict action has been assured against those responsible for it.

Gujarat HC declines to hear bail plea of Sohrab case accused

The Gujarat High Court today declined to entertain the bail plea of a suspended police officer, who is an accused in the 2005 fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster, on the ground that the Supreme Court has transferred the case to Maharashtra.

N K Amin, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), was arrested in 2007. Justice Anant Dave declined to
hear Amin’s petition holding that this court no longer has the jurisdiction in the case as its trial has been shifted to the neighbouring state, and disposed of the plea.

PMO denies Modi’s claim of Rs 1880 crore expense on Sonia visit

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Friday rubbished the claim by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi that Rs 1,880 crore were spent on overseas visits of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, saying it was “untrue and misleading”. The PMO underlined that the government had spent no money on Gandhi’s overseas visits or her medical treatment abroad or in India.
