Social crusader Anna Hazare on Saturday said that an investigation should be launched into the charge of corruption in property deals at Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

If investigation proves charges against Robert Vadra incorrect, then he can file a defamation case, suggested Hazare.

On Friday, India Against Corruption flung an explosive charge of corruption in property deals at Vadra, triggering furious denials from both the government and the Congress party.

Imran Khan sets off on peace march to S Waziristan

Hundreds of supporters of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on Saturday set off on a motorcade “peace march” to the terrorists-riddled South Waziristan to protest US drone strikes in the tribal belt.

Khan and several key leaders of his Tehrik-e-Insaf party, including former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, set off in a motorcade of some 130 vehicles from the Islamabad Motorway this morning, apparently undeterred by government warnings of possible suicide attacks.

Kingfisher needs to submit detailed plan to DGCA, Ajit Singh says

Troubled Kingfisher Airlines would have to submit a detailed plan to aviation regulator DGCA before they are allowed to resume flights, civil aviation minister Ajit Singh said today.

Asked whether the DGCA was likely to move ahead with suspending or cancelling the crisis-ridden carrier’s flying license, he said it was for the regulator to decide after it studies their reply to the showcause notice issued to them.

Blast at scrap shop two dead

A blast occurred at a scrapyard in the Punjab’s industrial city on Saturday, leaving two persons dead and injuring five others.

The blast took place in Samrala, Ludhiana.

The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.

The Punjab Police are investigating the incident. More details are awaited.

NCP demands CBI probe into Nifty ‘flash crash’

NCP today demanded a CBI probe into the 900-point ‘flash crash’ of National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty, which had halted trade on the exchange for about 15 minutes.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said a CBI probe was necessary to find out the “conspiracy” behind the incident.

“This was a conspiracy to destabilise the economy, which was looking good after the Centre’s reform measures. Small investors have been looted and the need of the hour is to go into the root cause of the conspiracy,” NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said.

Myanmar extends fight against drug

Myanmar has extended its 15-year drug eradication plan by another five years, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The programme was to end in 2014 but has now been extended till 2019.

The Golden Triangle, covering an area of 950,000 sq km, is one of Asia’s major illegal opium-producing areas. The region overlaps with Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

Myanmar is taking a lead role in fighting drugs and is increasing cooperation with various stateholders, Home Minister Lieutenant-General Ko Ko said.

Cauvery water row: Shutdown hits normal life in Karnataka

A day-long shutdown to protest the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu crippled life in Karnataka on Saturday.

The statewide shutdown called by farmers and pro-Kannada organisations is supported by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular.

Uneasy calm prevailed in Bangalore and other cities and towns of the state.

“The 12-hour shutdown began at 6am. There were stray incidents of road blockade, forcible closure of shops and damage to a couple of state-run buses,” a senior police official said here.

Pitch used for 1st semifinal was not ideal for T20: ICC CEO

ICC CEO Dave Richardson on Saturday admitted that the strip used for the first semi-final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan was not “ideal” for T20 cricket but mentioned that pitch preparation is a difficult task in the prevailing climatic conditions in the Island nation.

Braving acute pain, Sharmila Nicollet shot a superb round of 72 but it came a bit late as she crashed out at the midway stage of the Lacoste Ladies Open de France, here.

Sharmila, who hurt herself in the first round, and shot a disappointing 80, came out for the second round after taking pain killers, and carded a 72.

Three of family murdered in Mulayam’s constituency

Three people, all from the same family, were killed in Mainpuri on the night of Friday-Saturday, police said.

Om Prakash (55), his wife Gunjan Devi (44) and their nine-year-old daughter Shalu were found with their throats slit, police said, adding that it appeared, prima facie, to be a case related to old animosity.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mainpuri Shalabh Mathur told IANS that the incident took place in Lakutpur village under Kishni police station in Mainpuri, about 220 km from the state capital.

Islamic Artwork on pavement spark tensions in France

Calligraphic verses from the Noble Qur’an and Hadith of Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.S) on a pavement sparks furor in French Muslim youths.

It allowed people to walk on the Holy verses of Qu’ran. It was actually an artwork called ‘Technologia’ by Mounir Fatmi, which contain projecting of video images on the Pont-Neuf bridge’s pavement in France.

It was planned to put cordons in place to insure the projections could not be walked on, but accidentally started on Tuesday night without installing any.

Buoyed by his comfort with Hindi and Bollyood’s relaxed pace, southern star Prithviraj Sukumaran, who will soon be seen in “Aiyyaa”, is eager to find a firm foothold in Hindi filmdom.

“I want to go slow with southern movies. I will do one-two films a year. So, that means three months, and the rest of the time I want to give to my new found Bollywood career,” Prithviraj told IANS, a few days before his Bollywood debut with Rani Mukerji.

Man held for traveling on fake passport
(Siasat News): The immigration officers of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport arrested a man for making an attempt to travel on a fake passport and handed him over to Shamshabad RGI police.

As per the details, Abdul Razzaque, 26, native of Kerala state, had visited Dubai in 2009 on a visit visa. As soon as the term of the visa expired, he pasted his photograph on the passport of one V V Mukesh and reached Hyderabad.

However, he could not dodge the immigration staff. Further investigations are on.

Chinese railways carried 1.44 bn passengers

China’s railways carried 1.44 billion people in the first three quarters of the year, up 4 percent from a year earlier, the railways ministry said Saturday.

In the first nine months, the country’s railways delivered 2.91 billion tonnes of goods, a statement said, adding that supplies of goods were affected by a downward economic trend during the period, reported Xinhua.

Goa’s deputy CM post based on Karnataka model: Parrikar

The appointment of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Francis D’Souza as deputy chief minister in Goa has been adapted from the models in Karnataka and Maharashtra, according to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Parrikar earlier this week had said that D’Souza had been chosen for the post of deputy chief minister, and a formal notification would be issued Monday.

“There is a deputy cheif minister in Karnataka and Mumbai (Maharashtra). It’s the same thing here,” Parrikar told reporters after a meeting of BJP legislators.
