A gang leader in Britain fled a raided place after a hiding little boy emerged and gave him his pocket money. The thief was later jailed for about seven years for causing violent disorder at the house.

The frightened 11-year-old emerged from hiding under a bed to strike the deal and handed over his four pounds (about $6) pocket money. The baby-faced gang leader fled the raid after that, a judge heard.

Ricky Purcell, 20, “whose masked thugs had burst in armed with knives and hammers” amazingly agreed to leave with the cash, The Sun reported.

There are more temples than toilets in India, BJP, Congress slammed Jairam Ramesh

The BJP hit out at rural development minister Jairam Ramesh on Saturday for his comment that there are more temples in the country than toilets, saying he should not make such statements which hurt the “fine fabric of faith and religion” in the country.

“Making of toilets and having faith in a religious place of worship are two different things. India is a multicultural country where we should have unblemished faith in a temple, a mosque, a gurudwara or a church. You cannot juxtapose the two,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

EC to take up special drives for enrollment of voters

The Election Commission of India will conduct a special drive for enrollment of voters in 15 constituencies of Hyderabad district.

As per the schedule, the draft electoral rolls in respect of 15 Assembly Constituencies of Hyderabad District have been published on October 1 at all designated locations of EROs, AEROs Offices and Polling Station building locations. Further, Special Campaign will be conducted on October 7, October 14 and October 21 at all Polling Station locations.

Congress on Saturday appeared to disapprove of Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh for his comment that there are more temples in the country than toilets, saying “we respect the sanctity of every religious place”.

KS Brar attack case: Barring three men, 9 get bail

Barring three men, the Scotland Yard on Saturday released on bail the remaining nine persons, including two women, arrested in connection with the attack on ‘Operation Blue Star’ hero Lt Gen (retd) KS Brar.

The New Scotland Yard in a statement said “three men – aged 33, 34 and 25 – remain in custody. The remaining nine are now bailed to return in November pending further inquiries”.

Three others who were arrested on suspicion of immigration law violations, unconnected with the probe into the attempted murder, were referred to the UK Border Agency, the statement said.

Cong should come clean on allegations against Vadra: BJP

Bomb kills woman, injures other in northern Nigeria

A bomb explosion near a state-owned National Television Authority (NTA) station in a northern Nigerian state has killed a woman and injured five children.

Spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushua Shuaib said the overnight bomb blast occurred in Jalingo town in Taraba state.

He said a similar blast in the town had killed one person and left 14 others wounded on Thursday.

Though no group has claimed responsibility, the only terrorist group that has been carrying out such bombing campaigns in the country is the Islamic sect known as Boko Haram.

SP to support UPA, but oppose anti-people policies

Samajwadi Party on Saturday said it will continue to oppose the UPA government’s “anti-people” policies but will support it in a bid to keep the “communal forces” at bay.

Recipe: Corn Rolls

Ingredients:

• 2 cup boiled Corn Seeds
• ½ cup All-Purpose Flour
• 4 Green Chilies
• 3 tbsp Coriander Leaves (chopped)
• Salt and Pepper (to taste)
• ½ tsp Sugar
• 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
• 1/3 tsp Baking Soda
• Bread Crumbs (to coat)
• Ghee or Oil (for frying)

For the Batter:

• ¼ cup Rice Flour
• ¼ Gram Flour
• ¼ tsp Baking Soda
• Salt (to taste)
• 2 cups Water

Method

• Combine all the batter ingredients to obtain a thin batter. Keep aside.

garam masala- 1 tsp

curry leaves- a few
coriander leaves chopped
oil- 1 tbsp
salt to taste

For the dough:

Wheat flour- 1lb
ghee or butter- 1 1/2 tbsp
salt to taste

Instructions

Make the dough using the above ingredients and keep it aside for 1/2-1 hr. Keep the dough covered with a moist cloth.

BJP slams Congress for ‘double standards’ on FDI

Alleging that Congress has been following double standards on FDI policy, the BJP on Saturday said the party leading the UPA has no moral right to seek the support of the Opposition and the nation for its so-called reforms.

Chargesheet filed against Kanda in flight attendant’s suicide

The Delhi Police Saturday filed a chargesheet against former Haryana Minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, who is accused of abetting the suicide of his former employee Geetika Sharma.

The chargesheet was filed by police before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) D.K. Jangala. Police have also booked Aruna Chaddha, former official of Kanda’s now-defunct MDLR Airlines where Geetika had worked.

ACMM Jangla took cognisance of the chargesheet and posted the matter for Oct 9 for further hearing.
“I take cognisance of the chargesheet,” the court said.

Freedom fighter and former governor of Uttar Pradesh B Satyanarayana Reddy died in a private hospital here on Saturday morning.

He was 86.

The veteran politician had been suffering from a lung disease for some time now and was admitted to a private hospital here a few days ago.

Hailing from Shadnagar in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, Reddy took part in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and faced arrest.

In 1978 he was elected to Rajya Sabha on behalf of Janata Party and for a second term in 1984 as Telugu Desam Party nominee.

Former DMK minister arrested

Tamil Nadu Police Saturday arrested former DMK minister K. Ponmudi in a red sand quarrying case.

Ponmudi was the minister for mines and minerals and higher education in the previous DMK government that was voted out last May.

Ponmudi’s arrest in Villupuram, around 150 km from here, comes a day after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea.

The police have registered a case against Ponmudi on a complaint that his son, Gowtham Sigamani, and other close relatives were involved in quarrying of red sand and not paying any fee to the state.

BJP on Saturday demanded a “fair” probe into the allegations against Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra by civil society activists Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan that he was hugely favoured by realty major DLF.

Communist rebel leader captured in Philippines

Philippine troops have captured a senior communist rebel leader who had received military training in Libya and carried a USD 135,000 bounty.

Regional military spokesman Col Generoso Bolina says New People’s Army regional chief Benjamin Mendoza and three other suspected insurgents were arrested in the early hours today outside their hideout in suburban Quezon City.

He says Mendoza underwent commando, heavy weapons, bomb-making and sniper training in Libya in the early 1980s.
