President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit is contesting the Lok Sabha by-election from the Jangipur constituency as a Congress candidate.

FIIs pump over Rs 3,300 cr in stocks in Oct so far

Overseas investors poured in more than Rs 3,300 crore in the country’s stock market last week as the government continued with its reforms to boost economic growth and investor sentiment.

During October 1-5, FIIs were gross buyers of shares worth Rs 13,094 crore, while they sold equities amounting to Rs 9,714 crore translating into net inflow of Rs 3,381 crore (USD 645 million), according to the data available with market regulator SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India).

An Indian initiative is lighting up Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s birthplace in Pakistan as part of a little publicised project aimed at energy cooperation, including tapping alterative sources of energy, in the subcontinent.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has set up two power micro-grids in Chak 313 village of Pakistan’s Sahiwal district as part of the initiative.

RIL hits overseas markets with third bond issue, raises $1.5 bn

The country’s largest corporate Reliance Industries (RIL), which is sitting on a cash pile of nearly Rs 73,000 crore, is on a debt-raising spree again and has mopped up USD 1.5 billion through an overseas bond sale progamme over the weekend, two people with the direct knowledge of the development said.

With the latest debt raising, the Mukesh Ambani-led oil, gas, petrochemicals and retail giant has raised USD 4 billion so far this year, with the first two being a USD 1.5-billion issue in February and another USD 1 billion issue in May.

Hefty hike for airline chiefs; Kingfisher CEO among top

Air carriers may be flying through rough weathers, but their top executives have got handsome pay hikes, while CEO of crisis-ridden Kingfisher has emerged as the second-highest paid among all his peers at Vijay Mallya-led UB Group.

Among the country’s three listed airlines also, Kingfisher CEO Sanjay Agarwal’s pay package was the second highest in the last fiscal ended March 31, 2012, as per the remuneration details provided in their annual reports.

Recently, Kingfisher had to announce a temporary lockout due to employee unrest, triggered by non-payment of salaries to the staff.

32 Americans join Pakistan anti-drone rally

Thirty-two Americans, most of them women, have joined a massive anti-drone rally in Pakistan led by former cricketer Imran Khan.

The campaigners of the US anti-war group Code Pink are here to draw attention of the American public to the impact of the US drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

The group, which describes itself as a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement, is working to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Geo TV reported.

15 dead in Karachi violence

Fifteen people have died in violence in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, the Dawn reported Sunday.

A clash between two rival gangs Saturday left seven people dead, including the gang leaders. Seven more were shot dead in different parts of Karachi.

A bullet ridden body was also found. The businesses were closed after tensions gripped the city.

Police begins probe into ‘conspiracy’ against N D Tiwari

Police have begun a probe into the claim of N D Tiwari’s close aide that the veteran Congress leader was given sleeping pills for several years as part of a conspiracy.

“On the basis of media reports, we have ordered investigation into the claims of Bhawanidutt Bhatt, an OSD of N D Tiwari, that Tiwari was given sleeping pills after he became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand (2002-07),” SSP Neeru Garg said here today.

Gilani says ‘not happy’ with PPP govt led by Ashraf

Differences between Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Yousuf Raza Gilani have come to the fore, with an “unhappy” former premier speaking out for the first time against PPP-led government for its inability to avert his son’s arrest and for “unceremoniously” changing bureaucrats appointed by him.

Gilani was convicted of contempt and disqualified as a lawmaker by the Supreme Court in June after he refused to act on orders to revive graft cases against Zardari in Switzerland. He was replaced by Raja Pervez Ashraf as Premier.

Things were unbearable in presidency: Gilani

Former Pakistani prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that things had became unbearable for him to continue living at the presidency after his son was “held” at the gate.

Gilani was reportedly living in a presidential suite of four bedrooms on the sixth floor of the Aiwan-e-Sadr since his ouster in July.

Gilani said there was no political prisoner during his rule but his son was made one.

“I abandoned Aiwan-e-Sadr when things got beyond the limits of tolerance,” Geo TV quoted Gilani as saying at his home in Lahore Saturday.

Telangana Political Joint Action Committee chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Sunday denied having any differences with Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Ban alcohol, demand Maharashtra’s Chandrapur tribals

Tribal women from Maharashtra’s Chandrapur have sent 80,000 postcards to Chief Miniter Prithviraj Chavan asking to make the district liquor-free, a social activist said Sunday.

“This is a last-ditch effort by the tribal women of the district to demand a ban on liquor,” said Paromita Goswami, a lawyer and social activist, who led the postcard campaign.

“The demand to ban liquor is being made since 2010. We have been asking a reassessment of the state government’s policy on liquor in the district, including the sale of country liquor and Indian made foreign liquor,” Goswami told IANS.

Iran’s Parliament drops impeachment over economy

Iran’s parliament has abandoned its planned impeachment of a Cabinet minister over the free-fall of the country’s currency.

Iran’s parliament speaker Ali Larijani today stopped a debate on impeaching Sports and Culture Minister Mohammad Abbasi, saying some lawmakers withdrew “because of economic situation,” indicating that fixing the economy was more important than political moves.

Ten lawmakers signed the original impeachment petition, the minimum number required.

80 % of urban working Indian women fat

About 80 percent of urban Indian working women in the 25-45 age group are fat because of sedentary lifestyle and changing food habits, a survey by a health organisation has revealed.

“Most of the women who were obese said they were overweight because of sedentary lifestyle, lack of time to walk or exercise due to work pressure, and not having healthy food,” Heal Foundation president R. Shankar told IANS here.

According to new studies, taking supplements has a beneficial effect on memory and may work by increasing the efficiency of brain cells.

N Korean soldier defects to South across border

A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the heavily armed border between the two countries after killing two of his superiors, the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The soldier claimed he shot dead his platoon and squad chiefs while on guard duty at a North Korean picket facility near the Demilitarised Zone shortly before crossing the border yesterday, the JCS said.

South Korean border guards took the soldier into custody and are currently questioning him, it added.

British PM David Cameron has made his debut on popular micro-blogging site Twitter in an effort to reach out to the public as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party.

In his first tweet, @David_Cameron wrote: “I’m starting Conference with this new Twitter feed about my role as Conservative Leader. I promise there won’t be ‘too many tweets…'”.

Previously, tweets from Cameron were published through @Number10gov, the official feed for the PM’s office, the BBC reported.

13 killed, 9 injured in accident in China

Thirteen people were killed and nine others seriously injured after two passenger buses collided on a highway near Zibo in east China’s Shandong Province on sunday.

A passenger coach run by the Shanghe County Long-distance Transportation Company of Jinan City hit a sedan then broke through median barriers and collided with another coach travelling in the opposite lane, Wang Jiguo, chief of the Zibo Traffic Police Brigade said.

Drones could soon ‘refuel’ themselves mid-air

Drones could soon handle mid-air refuelling by themselves, without the involvement of human pilots, US military flight tests have shown. The findings raise the possibility of automated “flying gas stations” topping off robotic aircraft over future battlefields.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) regularly uses unmanned drones to target militants in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen.

The US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently flew two modified RQ-4 Global Hawk drones in close proximity to simulate mid-air refuelling.

Sudan military plane crash kills 17

At least 17 soldiers were killed in Sudan Sunday when their plane crashed near Khartoum, Xinhua reported.

The aircraft, carrying 21 soldiers, crashed in Omdurman city. Four others were injured.
