US Offers Tens of Millions More in Funding for Syria Rebels

For a long time, the Iraqi government tried to stay out of the civil war going on just across their border in Syria, but as the battle lingers, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has announced he wants to see a negotiated settlement.

To that end, Iraq is pushing a two-stage plan that would bring both sides together for talks on an inclusive political transition that would end the fighting. They are urging UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to push the plan as well, and given his apparent lack of any better ideas, it seems the plan may have currency by default.

US Envoy: Preparations Made for Attacking Iran

In an interview today with the Times of Israel, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro denied any disagreements between the US and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the prospect of war with Iran, insisting the two are “totally in sync.”

Shapiro, who recently got into a shouting match with Netanyahu in front of a Congressional delegation, insisted that the US has made all the “necessary preparations” for attacking Iran, and believes they have coordinated well with Israel.

OU students plan rally from Arts College to Tank Bund

Osmania University Students JAC has said that it would be only the Congress March on September 30, instead of Telangana March.

The OUSJAC leaders said that Congress MLAs and Ministers, who had resigned, would alone participate in the Telangana March. They appealed to the students of the region to come to the Osmania University Campus for participating in the students’ rally from the Arts College to Tank Bund on September 30 from 10 am. The JAC also made it clear that they would not leave the city till the Centre announced separate Telangana State.

Humiliated by Australia in their opening Super Eights match, a jittery India will have to pick up the pieces from their all-round failure and come up with an inspired performance against arch-rivals Pakistan in their do-or-die game in the World Twenty20 here tomorrow.

India’s heaviest satellite GSAT-10 successfully launched

India’s advanced communication satellite GSAT-10 was successfully launched early today on board Ariane-5 rocket from Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana.

GSAT-10, with a design life of 15 years is expected to be operational by November and will augment telecommunication, Direct-To-Home and radio navigation services. At 3,400 kg at lift-off, GSAT-10 is the heaviest built by Bangalore-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation. It was ISRO’s 101st space mission.

Gearing up for the high-voltage clash against arch-rivals India, Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez said his team has the edge going into tomorrow’s World T20 Super Eight game after the morale-boosting win over Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men in a warm-up match.

Youth dies in police custody in UP

A youth died in police custody here after which three policemen, including the Station House Officer, were placed under suspension and a case lodged against them, police sources said on Saturday.

Deepak Yadav (25) was taken to Kotwali police station yesterday and his family members were informed that he was ill late in the night.

Before his relatives could reach the police station, Deepak was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the sources said.

Deepak’s brother Rajiv has alleged that he died after being assaulted by policemen.

Maoists kill two in Bihar

An elected rural representative and his son were shot dead by Maoists in Bihar’s Vaishali district, police said on Saturday.

The armed Maoists late Friday night killed Umesh Singh and his son Kunal Bharti in Suki village, about 65 km from here, Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sinha said.

According to police, Maoist guerrillas stormed into Singh’s house and dragged him and his son out.

“They first chopped off Singh’s hands and legs and shot him and his son dead,” a police official said.

Three girls drown in Bihar

Three girls, including two siblings, got drowned Saturday in a water body in Pahachha village in Bihar’s Jamui district, police sources said.

Bablu Singh’s two daughters – Beauty Kumari (9) and Chhoti Kumari (6) and Lallan Singh’s daughter Shikha Kumari (8) were taking bath in the pond ‘Badi Ahar’ as they accidently slipped in the deep waters, sources said.

All three bodies have been fished out.

Missing Indian-American student found dead in US

The body of an Indian-American student of Northwestern University, who was missing since last week, has been found floating between two boats at a harbour in Wilmette, Illinois, university officials say.

18-year-old Harsha Maddula, Northwestern pre-med sophomore and straight-A student, disappeared on last Saturday after attending an off-campus party with friends. A fisherman found Maddula’s body floating between two boats near the Sheridan Road Bridge at the harbour in Wilmette on Thursday night, according to ABC News affiliate WLS-TV.

“We will do what is good for the country… reforms are not one-off process,” he said. The Prime Minister was responding to questions on demands for rollback of decisions on FDI in multi-brand retail, diesel price hike and cap on subsidised LPG cylinders by the opposition.

Indian communication satellite successfully launched

India’s heaviest communication satellite with 30 communication transponders was launched successfully early Saturday by an Ariane-5 rocket from French Guiana in South America, ISRO said.

The GSAT-10 satellite weighting 3,400 kg and India’s 101st space mission “is in good health” and would be operational by November, the Bangalore-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement here.

Two die as plane crashes during Indonesian airshow

The pilot and co-pilot onboard a small plane were killed Saturday after the plane crashed in Indonesia’s Bandung airport following a failed manoeuver during an air show, Air Force spokesman Agung Sasongko said here.

The plane, owned by the Indonesian Aerosport Federation, went down and exploded, the spokesman said.

“The crash took place when the plane was performing a show. The two people on board were killed,” Agung told Xinhua by phone.

The crash took place as the plane flew too low after conducting five loop manoeuvers in Bandung Air show, the Metro TV reported.

Ganesha procession begins in Hyderabad amid tight security

Thousands of devotees hit the roads in this southern city Saturday as the annual Ganesha procession began amid unprecedented security.

Armed policemen kept a tight vigil at sensitive points along the procession route in the old city, as hundreds of trucks carrying idols began their journey from different locations towards Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of the city.

Over 30,000 policemen and personnel from the central paramilitary forces, the majority of them in the communally sensitive old city, have been deployed to maintain law and order.
