‘Kejriwal used Anna for making political party’

New Delhi: A day after Anna Hazare distanced himself from the political ambitions of his one-time team member Arvind Kejriwal, senior Congress leader Jagdambika Pal on Saturday said the veteran Gandhian was used by his team members for fulfilling their own agenda.

Speaking in response to Anna Hazare’s blog posted on Friday, Pal said: “Now it is clear to everyone that Anna wanted to run campaign for Lokpal but Arvind Kejriwal and others used him for making political party. Now it is clear that they had the intentions of using Anna for their political ambitions.”

Teenager gangraped in Haryana, 4 accused arrested

Chandigarh: In yet another incident of gangrape involving a teenage girl in Haryana, a Class XI student was allegedly sexually assaulted by four men in the godown of a shop in Gohana town in Sonepat district.

All four accused have been arrested, Gohana’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Yashpal Singh Khatana, said Saturday.

The 16-year-old girl, a student of a private school, was raped on Thursday afternoon when she had gone to the shop to buy something.

Andhra Pradesh Andhra: Six killed in road mishap

Six persons were killed and eight others injured when their auto-rickshaw collided with a lorry at Gajapathinagaram village in neighbouring Vizianagaram districton Saturday, police said.

While three passengers were killed on the spot as many succumbed to their injuries while being shifted to a local hospital, they said.

The mishap occurred when the auto driver rammed into the sand-laden lorry while overtaking another vehicle, police said.

The deceased have been identified as P Tata (60), L. Chandrudu (55), Ramalakshmu (48), T Simhachalam (65), T. Adinarayana and K.Appalanarsi.

No more fasts, says Anna Hazare

Anna Hazare has said that he will not resort to fasting any more to press for his demands, and will fight for his causes through agitations.

“Now onwards I will not undertake fast. In future I will fight for my causes through agitations,” Hazare said Friday night at a Ganesh mandal ceremony in Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial township near here.

The anti-corruption crusader also said he would continue to work to send “clean” people to Parliament.

He said a large number of retired IAS officers had shown their willingness to join his movement for a corruption-free India.

2,000-year-old beef found in NW China

Chinese archaeologists have said that a black substance found in an ancient tomb in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province is a 2,000-year-old portion of beef.

“After months of high-tech analysis scientists confirmed the substance’s makeup,” Hu Songmei, a paleontologist from the provincial archaeological institute said. The tomb was discovered during a two-year excavation project conducted by the institute that began in 2009 in the Wanli village in the provincial capital of Xi’an.

Thousands rally against anti-Islam film in Pak

Thousands of people marched through streets of Pakistan’s biggest city Karachi on Saturday to protest against an anti-Islam film that angered Muslims across the globe.

Workers of some religious parties marched through the M A Jinnah road with banners and placards denouncing the US and the film and also trampled American flags.

They also chanted slogans including “Hang the American film maker” and “We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the honour of Prophet Mohammed”.

The rally ended peacefully without any incident of violence.

Accused in terror case handed over to Maha ATS

Police today produced three accused before a local court after completion of their interrogation in connection with an alleged terror plot.

The First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court remanded two of these accused in judicial custody till October 11, while the third has been handed over to ATS Maharashtra, police sources said.

The case was registered at the Basaweshwara Nagar Police Station a month ago.

Investigation is continuing, police said.

Continuing her tirade against the Congress-led UPA, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Saturday accused the central government of “looting in the name of reforms”.

“Reforms are meant to usher development for the people. Nowadays, the trend is whenever any anti-people decision is taken, it is taken in the name of reforms. In the name of reforms and ‘aam admi’, loot is going loot,” wrote Banerjee on Facebook.

PM has done U-turn on FDI in retail: BJP

BJP today refused to buy Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s contention that no international pressure was behind the decision to allow FDI in multibrand retail and charged that he has done a U-turn on his own stand till 2004 against the policy.

“It is strange and it is time the Prime Minister clarifies on this. In 2002 and 2004, he had spoken against FDI in multi-brand retail. He has taken a U-turn somewhere between 2004 and 2010,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

He was administered the oath of the office by President Pranab Mukherjee.

10 babies die in Pakistan hospital

At least 10 new-born babies died due to interruptions in oxygen supply caused by power breakdown in a children’s hospital in Pakistan’s Sindh province over the last 24 hours, police and hospital sources said Saturday.

According to police, four children who were in the intensive care unit died late Friday night when power broke down at the government hospital in Larkana city, Xinhua reported.

KCR will be beaten if he participates in March

TDP senior leader Motkupalli Narasimhulu has said people would thrash the TRS chief Chandrasekhara Rao if he participated in the Telangana March scheduled for Sunday.

State BJP chief gets threatening on Facebook

Andhra Pradesh BJP unit chief G Kishan Reddy today lodged a police complaint alleging that he received a death threat from a Pakistani national on a social networking site.

In a complaint registered at the cyber crime department, Reddy stated that he had received a threatening message on the Facebook, posted by one Ikram Shah, a Pakistani national, poliec said.

According to police, the youth had asked Reddy to desist from making statements against the Muslims who were staging protests against a controversial film deemed offensive to Islam, or else he would be eliminated.

Hrithik to romance Katrina again in a Hollywood remake

Actor Hrithik Roshan will be seen romancing Katrina Kaif once again in the Hindi remake of the Tom Cruiser starrer Hollywood film ‘Knight and Day’.

‘Knight and Day’ is a 2010 romantic action comedy Hollywood film starring Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film, directed by James Mangold, had received mixed response.

March in Karachi against anti-Islam film

Thousands marched in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi Saturday against an anti-Islam movie made in the US, which has sparked protests across the world, the local media reported.

Moderate Sunni groups organised the procession which concluded peacefully after leaders delivered speeches and demanded an international law to ban insult to religions under the excuse of freedom of expression, Xinhua reported.

The leaders denounced the US for refusing to ban the blasphemous movie despite demands from the Islamic countries.

Millions bid adieu to Lord Ganesha in Mumbai, Maharashtra

Millions of people in Mumbai and across Maharashtra trooped out on the streets Saturday to bid adieu to the elephant headed-Lord Ganesha at the end of the 10-day Ganeshotsav (festival) amid tight security at the immersion ceremonies, officials said.

The day was marked with colourful revelry among men, women, youth and children, dancing and singing bhajans as over 90,000 big and small idols of Lord Ganesha were taken out since Saturday morning in Mumbai.

Another estimated 400,000 idols were taken out for immersions in the rest of Maharashtra in the state’s biggest religious festival.

Despite permission, Government creating hurdles for march: Telangana JAC

Telangana groups fighting for separate statehood to the region Saturday accused the Andhra Pradesh government of creating hurdles to foil the Telangana march despite giving permission for it.

Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convenor M. Kodandaram and other leaders alleged that the police were continuing arrests of Telangana activists coming to the city from various Telangana districts.

They demanded that the arrests be stopped immediately and both the government and the police cooperate with the JAC in the conduct of peaceful march on the banks of Hussain Sagar.

Clinton unveils USD 45 million in new aid for Syria

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today unveiled a total of USD 45 million in new funding for humanitarian aid and to help the civilian opposition in Syria.

Some USD 30 million will go towards aid, bumping up the total US funding for humanitarian relief to USD 130
million with a further USD 15 million for the civilian Syrian opposition, she told a meeting of the Friends of Syria.

The talks were attended by nine Syrian activists, who have been working with local coordination committees in cities such as Homs.
