Maoists kill two teenagers

Two persons were shot dead by suspected Maoists in Khunti district’s Gadsitam village, the police said today.

Rajendra Singh (18 years) and Tinu Ohoda (16), who had been to jail earlier for their alleged link with the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), were killed last night, Superintendent of Police Amaranth Mishra told reporters here.

Both the CPI (Maoist) and the PLFI operate in the area and the police suspect the Maoists to be behind the killings for their PLFI links, the SP said.

YSRC protests against power cut and diesel prices

Hundreds of YSR Congress leaders led by Mr. Janardhan Reddy Rangareddy district unit president, staged dharna and rasta roko at district collectorate against power cut, hike in diesel prices and bus fares.

Senior cop who got shoelaces tied by constable suspended

The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), who allegedly got his shoes laces tied by a constable.

The behaviour of ASP, Traffic, Agra, VN Tiwari was found “highly irresponsible” by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav after which his suspension orders were issued on Tuesday night, official sources said in Lucknow.

A photograph of the officer was published in some local dailies in Agra in which a constable was tying the lace of the officer’s shoes.

The officer has been attached to Police Training Centre (PTC), Chunar, they added.

65-year-old woman beaten to death for practising ‘black magic’

A 65-year-old wife of a retired headmaster was on Wednesday beaten to death at her house in Kandlapalli village in the district allegedly by a man on suspicion that she practised ‘black magic’, police said.

K Jamuna (65) was beaten to death with a stick by her distant relative K Chander Rao (40) at her house in Kandlapalli village this morning, said Jagtial Assistant Superintendent of Police Rama Rajeshwari.

According to the officer, Rao suspected that Jamuna practised some witchcraft on a teenager son of his close relative.

Sohrabuddin case: SC permits Amit Shah to enter Gujarat

The Supreme Court Thursday lifted its order restraining former Gujarat minister for state of home Amit Shah – an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout case – from entering the state. It also shifted the case outside Gujarat.

The apex court bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, however, transferred the trial in Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausar Bi killing case outside Gujarat.

Africa gains as India and China compete: Daily

The rivalry between India and China will “help boost Africa’s success”, said an article in the state-run Chinese daily that asked whether the “traditional Indian grip” was likely to loosen as Chinese investors run across Africa for opportunities.

Over three million people jobless in France

The number of unemployed people in France has risen to over three million for the first time since 1999, according to the labour ministry’s latest statistics.

According to the ministry’s monthly report, 23,900 more unemployed people entered the sluggish domestic labour market, up 0.8 percent compared to July, registering the 16th consecutive monthly rise. Last month, the total number of jobless stood at more than three million, a record high in 13 years, Xinhua reported.

On a yearly basis, the figure jumped by 9.2 percent.

Railway takes responsibility for train-bus collision

The railways took responsibility for the train-bus collision that killed eight people in Bihar, Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa said here Thursday, a day after the tragedy.

“The accident which took place Wednesday was a sad incident and the railways is taking responsibility,” Muniyappa told journalists here.

Muniyappa, who arrived here Wednesday night to meet the injured in the Patna Medical College and Hospital, said an inquiry had been ordered.

“It was unfortunate. The accident had taken place at a manned railway crossing,” he said.

7 Killed, 30 Injured in Train-Bus Collision in Bihar

Seven persons were killed and over 30 injured on Wednesday when a train rammed into an engineering college bus at a manned level crossing in Bihar’s Siwan district sparking protests by students who tried to torch the train.

The incident occurred when Howrah-Kathgodam Bagh Express hit a bus belonging to the DAV engineering college near Chap Dhala locality as it was trying to cross the track at about 3pm.

The engine of the train derailed under the impact, superintendent of police Natasha Guria said.

Pakistani daily lauds equal rights to transgenders

Hailing a Supreme Court ruling that transgenders have the same basic rights as every citizen, a Pakistani daily Thursday said that for years the community had been ostracised socially and denied their rights to respectable jobs, property and inheritance.

An editorial in the Daily Times said that “the state of minorities in Pakistan, whether religious or otherwise, is dismal to say the least”.

In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry stated that transgender individuals have the same basic rights as every citizen of Pakistan.

Security will be ensured for sarpanches: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today promised security to sarpanches and panches amid reports of mounting resignations by them in the wake of attacks by militants.

Government will not remain a silent spectator to these attacks and would take all necessary measures to ensure their safety and security, particularly in vulnerable areas, he told reporters here.

Referring to the killing of three panchayat members this year, Omar said the state government would not allow the ultras to disrupt ongoing efforts to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in the state.

Threat to block NATO supply over anti-Islam film in Pakistan

Several extremist and hardline religious groups on Thursday warned they would block NATO supply routes to Afghanistan if the Pakistan government does not take action against the makers of the anti-Islam film in three days.

The groups made the threat during a conference held in the Pakistani capital to discuss the film.

Addressing the meet, Lashkar-e-Toiba founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed demanded that US President Barack Obama should ban the film.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Munawar Hassan said the US should frame laws to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s husband industrialist Feroz Gulzar has described as “rubbish” a Bangladeshi tabloid’s report that Hina was involved in a romantic relationship with PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto. Feroz Gulzar, speaking to The News, a daily newspaper from Islamabad, said this appeared to be part of a campaign to malign his spouse and create disharmony in their matrimonial life.

Hina’s husband said, there was no premise for such a trash and for the reason, he could not offer any comment on the so-called social media gossip.

The state government-run firm also recorded a sharp rise in income at Rs.1,029.88 crore, which was an increase of 41.7 percent over the previous year, as per the annual report tabled by company chairman Sunil Arora.

Google executive jailed in Brazil

The head of Google’s Brazilian operations, Fabio Jose Silva Coelho, was arrested here Wednesday for failing to remove from the Internet several videos deemed slanderous by a Brazilian electoral court.

The Regional Electoral Court in the western state of Mato Grosso do Sul ordered the arrest, the federal police said in a communique.

The crime, the announcement said, carries a punishment of a year in jail, but since this is “a crime of minor offensive potential”, Coelho will be released after signing a pledge to present himself for court proceedings.

24 killed as bus plunges into river

Twenty-four passengers were killed and over 30 injured, some of them seriously, when a state transport bus fell into Purna river in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district Wednesday, police said.

The mishap took place around noon in Sangrampur taluka when the overcrowded bus plunged into the river while crossing the old Khiroda bridge, they said.

The bus carrying more than 60 passengers, mostly students, was on its way to Paturda village near here when the accident occurred, they said.

Actress Shama Sikander, who became popular through the show “Ye Meri Life Hai”, says she does few projects because she wants good content.

“I have said no to a lot of things. Unless anything really excites me, I don’t do it. Money does not excite me. Money is a basic requirement for all of us, but one has to be mad enough to say no to money and to say no to all of this (shows),” Shama told IANS.

Congress using CBI against me to fight polls: Modi

In an attempt to counter the Congress in the coming state assembly polls 2012 end, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused it of using the CBI to fight elections.

“The CBI and not the Congress is contesting the state assembly polls against me,” sources quoted Modi as saying at the BJP’s national executive meet here.

According to BJP sources, Modi said the Congress, which used a section of the bureaucracy against him in previous polls, had now deployed “an investigation agency” (read CBI) to defeat him in the state elections likely to be held in December this year.

Boy falls into sump, dies

An eight year-old boy died after he fell into a sump in an under construction building while playing.

Wajid Pasha, a second standard student of a private school, was playing near the building which had an open sump. when he accidentally fell into it on tuesday, police said.

The boy was fished out from the sump today morning. A case had been registered against the owner of the building for “death due to negligence”, police said.
