Youth killed by lover’s family

In a case of honour killing, a youth was burnt alive after family members of the girl he loved allegedly set him afire in Indira Nagar locality here.

18-year-old Govind was set afire when he reached the girl’s house on the invitation of her family members on September 1, police said.

He was rushed to a hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries where he died during treatment yesterday.

Sunil Kumar, brother of the victim, has lodged an FIR accusing the girl and her family members of killing Govind.

Pakistani daily “DAWN ” seeks national debate on blasphemy

A leading Pakistani daily Monday sought a national debate on the blasphemy law and demanded a “wide-ranging overhaul of laws that are clearly prone to abuse at the hands of those with personal vendettas and of bigoted thought”.

An editorial in the Dawn said: “To anyone familiar with the fabrications that often surround allegations of blasphemy, the revelation that the imam of a local mosque involved in producing the ‘evidence’ of a young Christian girl’s alleged blasphemous act blatantly tampered with the religious paraphernalia will have come as no surprise.”

Editor of Pak’s english daily beaten up for watching TV

An editor of one of Pakistan’s leading English dailies was beaten up by four men outside his home in the port city of Karachi for watching TV and listening to music.

Though the incident occurred on August 27 and Zainul Abedin, op-ed editor of The News daily, reported the matter to police, no action has been taken by authorities so far, journalists in Karachi said.

Ajay Devgn to meet Sikh community over `Son of Sardaar

Amritsar: After several allegations that his upcoming film `Son of Sardaar` hurts religious sentiments, actor-producer Ajay Devgn is all set to meet members of the Sikh community here and show them the film.

The 43-year-old actor would be coming down to Amritsar tomorrow with his friend, Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, to meet SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) officials, Sikh lawyers and members of All India Sikh Student Federation (AISSF).

The film would be screened during the meeting in Amritsar.

East Delhi violence: FIR against unknown persons, over 20 held

BSNL’s losses widen to Rs 8,851 cr in FY’12

State-run BSNL’s losses widened to about Rs 8,850.70 crore during 2011-12 mainly due to regulatory expenses and non-receipt of funds for its rural landlines operations.

The company had reported a loss of Rs 6,384.26 crore in 2010-11.

Total revenue of the company for 2011-12 declined to Rs 27,933.5 crore during the year, compared to Rs 29,687.62 crore it posted a year ago.

5 dead as portion of temple collapses

Five persons were killed when a portion of a temple in Amravati district in east Maharashtra collapsed following heavy downpour on Sunday night.

The mishap took place at Kaundinyapur, about 30 km from Amravati, when the portion of ancient Sri Krishna temple gave in due to heavy rains accompanied by a thunderstorm, a senior police officer said, adding the debris is being cleared to find out more victims, if any.

The identity of the deceased is being established, he said.

Top officials from Amravati district administration and police department have rushed to the spot, he said.

Mobile phones are actually filthier than toilet seats because they are never cleaned even after being handled by different people, thus swarming with germs, say researchers.

Tests showed that up to 10 times the amount of pathogens which cause nausea and stomach upsets were present on a mobile phone than a toilet seat.

Charles Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, said during his ongoing experiments he has found that bugs get onto a phone because it is so close to our hands and mouths.

Hamas PM reshuffles cabinet

Gaza’s Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh Sunday reshuffled his cabinet, replacing seven ministers.

The new reshuffle included the ministers of agriculture, housing, finance, health, Islamic endowment, local government and justice.

No new ministers from other factions or independents are participating in the new cabinet. Only Hamas parliamentarian bloc granted the new formation the vote of confidence amid the absence of the other blocs.

“This shakeup is a routine procedure that is meant to improve the performance of the government,” said Haniyeh before the vote session.

Arab invasion in Syria ‘not an option’: UN envoy

The UN’s new envoy to Syria has said a military intervention in the country by Arab forces is not on the cards.

“A military interference in Syria means failure of diplomatic efforts,” said Lakhdar Brahimi Sunday in an interview to Al Arabiya television.

“For me, this option is not available, and personally, this will be neither today nor tomorrow nor after tomorrow,” said the 78-year-old diplomat while urging a ceasefire in the conflict, which claimed 25,000 lives since March 2011, according to UN’s estimates.

Jordan home to over 180,000 Syrian refugees

The total number of Syrians who have fled unrest in their country and arrived in Jordan since early 2011 has exceeded 180,000, according to Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

According to state-run Petra news agency, at a meeting with British envoy to the Syrian opposition John Wilkes in Amman, the Jordanian minister reviewed the consequences of the Syrian crisis on Jordan.

Over 500,000 participate in Moscow Day celebrations

Over 500,000 people took part in the festive events in Moscow Sunday as the Russian capital went into the second day of its 2012 City Day celebrations, the Russian Interior Ministry reported Monday.

“More than 500,000 people attended festive events, over 300,000 of them in the city centre,” the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia targets its illegal private clinics

Saudi Arabia has launched a crackdown on illegal private medical practices.

Saudi Arabian authorities Sunday announced to have started the crackdown, with the latest closure being of a medical complex, existing with one physician only, Xinhua reported.

The closedown took place after an inspection by officials related to the Health Affairs in Jeddah city. It was found that the doctor was offering his services for a number of clinics in the complex with the assistance of unlicensed woman doctor and three nurses.

East Delhi tense after ‘rumour’ of man’s death

Clashes erupted on Sunday night between locals and police in East Delhi with a mob torching a police booth and over half a dozen vehicles following the “rumour” of the death of a man who reportedly fell off his scooter at a police picket.

The rioting took place in Mayur Vihar Phase-III at around 7.30 pm. Police lobbed tear gas shells and used force to disperse the crowd. Some locals and policemen suffered injuries in the clash.

ASP reiterates charge against SP, seek CBI inquiry

The row between two IPS officers of East Godavari district took a new twist today, with the Asst Superintendent of Police Rampachodavaram Naveen Kumar reiterating his charges against the East Godavari Superintendent of Police Dr C Trivikram Varma and coming out with the fresh demand for CBI inquiry.

Police bust brothel racket, four persons held

City Police have arrested a female brothel house organiser, a sex worker and two customers and seized Rs 5,000 from them. On a tip off, Task Force, Central Zone Team conducted raid on a house at Bulkampet area, yesterday and apprehended them, a police release here said today. The organiser Ms Bujji was a native of Panasapadu Village, East Godavari District. She came down to Hyderabad to learn beautician course and stayed at D K Road, Ameerpet Hyderabad.
