People have a right to seek employment anywhere: Shinde

Against the backdrop of MNS chief Raj Thackeray threatening to throw Biharis out of Maharashtra, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today said people have a right to seek employment anywhere in the country.

“Everybody has a right to go anywhere and seek employment,” he told reporters outside Parliament House.

On Thackeray targeting certain news channels, he said, “It is not fair to target media. At times media criticises people and it should be accepted.”

Pakistani actress Salma Agha’s daughter Sasha is set to make inroads into the Hindi film industry with Yash Raj Films’ “Aurangzeb”. She will play a glamourous role.

A total of 90 coal blocks face de-allocation threat

Amid the raging row over coal block allocation, as many as 90 mines face the threat of de-allocation as these are under scanner for non-production.

Of these, 58 coal blocks are in the immediate focus with an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) set to decide their fate today.

The government has already issued de-allocation notices to these 58 blocks — 33 alloted to government firms and 25 to private entities.

Besides these, there are 32 more whose cases would be reviewed by the IMG in its subsequent meetings, sources said.

India should address rights issues: Human Rights Watch

India should accept the recommendations by UN member states to address the country’s “most serious human rights problems”, Human Rights Watch said Monday.

During the September session of the UN Human Rights Council, India will submit its responses to the 169 recommendations made at its second review on May 24.

The wide-ranging recommendations call upon India to ratify multinational treaties against torture and enforced disappearances, and repeal the much-abused Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

China sees soaring smartphone market

China’s smartphone market saw its sales volume soar to 38.19 million units in the second quarter, according to a report released Monday by market researcher Analysys International.

The figure represented a 22.5-percent increase compared with that of the previous quarter and a sharp rise of 127.1 percent over the corresponding period in 2011, reported Xinhua citing the report.

Tanzeem Insaaf has expressed great concern over presenting Hyderabad as the hub of terror activities and on the complaints of Muslim youth being targeted.

Leaders of Tanzeem Insaaf Syed Aliuddin Ahmed Asad, Muneer Patel, Mohammed Yousuf, Mir Maqsood Ali, Syed Amir Mohammed Amjad and Syed Hameeduddin Ahmed Mahmood told that Muslim youth are first accused, arrested and harassed after which they are acquitted by the high court declaring them innocent. It puts a question mark on the performance of agencies keeping eye on law and order situation.

Film ‘Deccani Souls’ to be displayed in Hyderabad

Director Kaz Rahman has prepared a film ‘Deccani Souls’ to reveal those wounds which will be displayed in the city from Thursday.

Over 300 arrested at party held without liquor license

Over 300 people including 114 women and four organisers were arrested after police raided a party at a hotel where liquor was being served allegedly without a license in Wagholi near here, police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided the party at Maya lounge and bar in the early hours of Sunday and arrested 300 men and women, mostly in their 20s, partying there and four organisers for holding a party without a valid liquor permit.

New technique can extend life of hip replacements

Scottish researchers have developed a new technique which they claim could pave the way for hip replacements that last a lifetime.

Researchers from Glasgow`s Southern General Hospital are developing prototypes of a new system that aims at combating problems of the body forming soft tissues around hip replacements.

The new technique coats key surfaces with a “nanopattern” pitted plastic to encourage stem cells to form bone in contact with the new joint, the BBC News reported.

Usually, a hip replacement needs to be changed every 15 years.

Women exposed to PFCs have obese babies

Pregnant women who are exposed to common environmental chemicals, especially polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs), have smaller babies at birth but larger at 20 months, according to an Emory University study.

PFCs, used in the production of fluoropolymers, are found widely in protective coatings of packaging products, clothes, furniture and non-stick cookware. They are persistent compounds found abundantly in the environment.

PFCs have been detected in human sera, breast milk and cord blood.

SC partially lifts ban on iron mining in Karnataka

In partial relief to the mining industry in Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Monday lifted the ban on iron ore in three districts of the state.

The apex court lifted the ban in A category mines in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts after the court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) recommended that mining leases, consisting of 21 operational and 24 non-operational, be allowed to carry out mining operations.
