Police file report against Prashant Bhushan

The Delhi Police Monday filed a report in a complaint against lawyer and erstwhile Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan for an allegedly seditious speech on Kashmir saying that they will follow the court’s direction.

The police filed the report before Metropolitan Magistrate Purshotam Pathak and said that the alleged speech by Bhushan was given in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

“The police is ready and willing to abide by any direction which the court may choose to pass in the matter,” said a police officer.

Coal row: CBI seeks more time from CVC to submit report

CBI has sought more time from Central Vigilance Commission to submit its status report on its probe into alleged irregularities in coal blocks allocation and utilisation.

CBI, which has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) after receiving a reference from CVC, could not finalise its report in three months time frame because of “complex nature” of the case, agency sources said.

They said a three-month time limit, which expired on August 31, is a flexible one and they can seek more time from the anti-corruption watchdog.

No bail for Pakistan blasphemy girl

A young Christian girl arrested on a blasphemy charge that has sparked an international outcry will remain in a high-security jail till at least Friday as the court hearing her case was adjourned on Monday.

Judge Muhammad Azam Khan adjourned the case until September 07 because of a lawyers’ strike today.

The adjournment followed a request from the lawyer of Malik Ammad, the man who filed the complaint against Rimsha Masih.

Rimsha has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after she was arrested from the low-income Mehria Jaffar area on the outskirts of Islamabad on August 16.

US Open: Paes, Sania advance to quarterfinals

India`s Leander Paes advanced to the quarterfinals of the men`s and mixed doubles events of the US Open tennis here at the Flushing Meadows.

Sania Mirza too advanced into the quarterfinal of the mixed event partnering Briton Colin Fleming Sunday.

It was also the end of road for Mahesh Bhupathi, who lost the first round of men`s doubles with Rohan Bopanna, as he decided to pull out of the mixed doubles event with Andrea Hlavackova. The sixth seeded pair of Bhupathi and Hlavackova gave a walkover to unseeded Spanish duo of Nuria Llagostera Vives and David Marrero.

Techie returns from US to commit suicide on Indian soil

A techie based in the United States returned to his home state Andhra Pradesh only to end his life over alleged marital discord, police said Monday.

Immadi Anil Kumar, 30, was found dead in a cab outside the residence of his sister in Kukatpally here Sunday evening.

A native of Guntur district in coastal Andhra, Kumar had landed from San Diego Saturday and checked into a hotel in Kukatpally.

MLA rips off shirt, Jharkhand assembly adjourned

Jharkhand assembly was adjourned twice today after an opposition MLA ripped off his shirt inside the house to press for demands.

As soon as the house convened at 11 am, opposition members trooped into the well of the house raising a din over a plethora of demands.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha(Prajatantric) MLASamresh Singh ripped his shirt, prompting Speaker C P Singh to first adjourn the house for an hour.

When the house assembled again, the opposition continued with the din leading to the adjournment till 12.30 pm.

Smiley Suri to make a comeback with ‘Kalygug’ sequel?

She debuted with hit film 2005 “Kalyug” and after two years Smiley Suri is likely to make a comeback with a sequel to her first film.

After “Kalyug”, which was about the porn film industry, she featured in a couple of more projects and her last release was “Crook” that came in 2010.

Sharing her future plans, she told IANS: “I will make a comeback soon for sure. The last two years were extremely bad for me. My dad passed away and I was in my shell. Now I have come out and am ready to face the camera.”

C M’s Indiramma Baata In Kurnool Dt Put-Off

The Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s ‘Indiramma Baata’ programme in Kurnool district today, was postponed to tomorrow, in view of the bad weather conditions.

The chief Minister was originally scheduled to leave for Kurnool by an helicopter from Begumpet airport today morning. But, due to heavy rain in Kurnool, the tour was put-off. The Air Traffic Control has also not given clearance for air travel of the CM as cumulo nimbus clouds formed on Kurnool. Hence, the Chief Minister’s Indiramma Baata to Kurnool was postponed.

Police arrest three chain snatchers, recover 31 tolas gold

The City Police on Monday arrested three alleged offenders who were allegedly involved in several cases of chain snatching.

Addressing a press conference, Assistance Commissioner of Police (Punjagutta Division) Venkata Narasaiah said that the accused – Shaik Mazhar, Syed Jaber and Mohd Sohai, aged between 19-20 years, were involved in chain snatching offences for the last six months. On a tip off, Punjagutta inspector P Sataiah along with his team, arrested the offenders and seized 31 tolas of stolen gold jewellery, worth about Rs 9.50 lakh from their possession.

Medical services hit as junior doctors in Andhra intensify stir

Medical services in the government-run hospitals across Andhra Pradesh were hit Monday as the junior doctors intensified their strike.

Emergency services in the Gandhi Hospital and Osmania Hospital in the state capital came to a standstill as junior doctors came out to protest the delay on part of the government to meet their long-pending demands.

Patients in the King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam and the Guntur Hospital were also suffering because of the strike.

The striking junior doctors alleged that the government failed to issue guidelines with regard to their rural service.

Draft GO for ‘B’ category seats in Engg colleges gets CM’s nod

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday approved the draft GO giving guidelines for online application for admissions to “B” category seats in Private un-aided Engineering Colleges in the State.

It may be recalled that on the Group of Ministers’ recommendations, the Chief Minister has directed that the guidelines shall be issued in line with orders of the Supreme Court. The GO will be issued shortly and it will bring transparency in admissions and ensure that seats are filled up on the basis of merit. By this, about 40,000 merit students will be benefitted.

Electronic cigarettes, touted as a safer substitute for cigarettes, could turn out to be a remedy worse than the disease and end up damaging the lungs, says a new study.

Electronic or e-cigarettes are devices that deliver nicotine through a vapour, rather than smoke. No combustion is involved but the nicotine is still derived from tobacco. However, there has been little scientific evidence to support claims either on its safety or efficiency.

Doctor held in Karanataka terror plot

Widening the net, police have arrested one more person allegedly linked with a terror module that was unearthed last week with 14 suspects now in custody.

The City Crime Branch picked up Dr Nayueem Siddique Sunday on the basis of information provided by those already arrested.

A laptop, mobile phone and Rs 10,000 in cash had been seized from Siddique, a native of Davangere, the CCB said in a release here.

Siddique was in touch with the other arrested and providing logistical and financial support to their activities, police said, adding, he was also working as recruiter for them.

Three killed, 600 affected in Bengal due to dengue

At least three persons have been killed and 600 people affected in West Bengal due to dengue, state Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said on Sunday.

“We have got reports that three dengue patients have died while another 600 are affected in the state,” Bhattacharya told reporters here.

Unofficial reports have however, claimed that more than 20 people have died.

The minister said the state government has alerted all hospitals and municipalities on the disease outbreak.

BJP not giving us fair option: Khurshid

Ruling out cancellation of allotted coal blocks, Law Minister Salman Khurshid Monday said the opposition was not giving the Congress-led UPA government a fair option to end the deadlock over the issue that has led to the BJP stalling parliament for more than a week.

Talking to IANS in the Parliament House complex here, the law minister said the opposition’s offer was akin to offering someone a respectable funeral if he hangs himself.

“What they are saying is like ‘I will give you a respectable funeral if you hang yourself’,” Khurshid said.

A caravan made up of a thousand camels loaded with a large stock of food grains belonging to Uthman (Radiallahu Anhu) arrived from Shaam (Syria). Several merchants offered to buy all of it. He asked them what profit they would pay. “Five per cent,” they said. He answered that he could get higher profit than that. They began to argue with him, saying that they did not know of any merchant who would offer him more than their quote.

No Americans killed in Peshawar blast: US

The US embassy here Monday denied that two Americans were killed in a car bomb attack in Peshawar.

An embassy spokesman said they had no reports of any Americans being killed, after provincial information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said Americans had died, reported Online news agency.

The US embassy released a statement by Department of State spokesperson Victoria Nuland which stated: “We can confirm that a vehicle belonging to the US consulate in Peshawar was hit in an apparent terrorist attack.
