Techie returns from US to commit suicide

A techie based in the United States returned to his home state Andhra Pradesh only to end his life over alleged marital discord, police said Monday.

Immadi Anil Kumar, 30, was found dead in a cab outside the residence of his sister in Kukatpally here Sunday evening.

A native of Guntur district in coastal Andhra, Kumar had landed from San Diego Saturday and checked into a hotel in Kukatpally.

India offers help to Tajikistan on unconventional energy

India on Monday offered to train Tajik personnel in the field of renewable energy and said it was willing to set up pilot projects in Tajikistan.

Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said the Indian government was ready to help Tajikistan in the field on unconventional energy by training its people and set up pilot projects so that it can learn the benefits of alternative energy models.

He was addressing industrialists from the two countries in the presence of Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon.

East Delhi violence: 13 arrested

Thirteen people were on Monday arrested in connection with rioting in east Delhi in which one person was killed following rumours that a youth died after an accident at a vehicle checking picket.

Thirty-nine people, including 35 police personnel, were injured in last night’s arsoning and rioting in Mayur Vihar Phase-III area after enraged locals attacked police posts and damaged public property.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area following the rioting after spreading of rumours that the man, who fell from his scooter at a police picket, died.

Coal scam blackening country’s face: Narendra Modi

Attacking the Centre on the coal allocation controversy, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the scam was “blackening the country’s face”.

“On the lines of Gujarat, the Centre had decided to distribute soil health cards to farmers. I don’t know when they are going to do this. They are stuck in coal (scam),” Modi said addressing a national convention on agri-business here.

“The scam is blackening the country’s face as Delhi has got mired in coal.”

Scrap 90 coal block allocations: CPI(M)

Accusing the government of being “obdurate”, the CPI(M) on Monday asked it to immediately cancel 90 coal block allocations and order a probe into the issue to enable a discussion in Parliament.

It also demanded an inquiry into the CAG findings about alleged “diversion” of a “substantial per cent of coal” extracted from the mines which led Reliance Power to make “windfall gain of Rs 20,000 crore”.

Saudi targets its illegal private clinics

Saudi Arabia has launched a crackdown on illegal private medical practices. Saudi Arabian authorities Sunday announced to have started the crackdown, with the latest closure being of a medical complex, existing with one physician only, Xinhua reported.

The closedown took place after an inspection by officials related to the Health Affairs in Jeddah city. It was found that the doctor was offering his services for a number of clinics in the complex with the assistance of unlicensed woman doctor and three nurses.

‘Not same level of enthusiasm among US voters’

As the US presidential race enters its home-run, the campaigners for President Barack Obama’s second term concede that there is not the same level of enthusiasm among voters that was four years ago, but argue that Americans are not that dissatisfied with the administration.

Admitting that the race is running too close to predict with each coming day, the Democrats say.

No bail for Pakistan blasphemy girl

A young Christian girl arrested on a blasphemy charge that has sparked an international outcry will remain in a high-security jail till at least Friday as the court hearing her case was adjourned on Monday.

Judge Muhammad Azam Khan adjourned the case until September 07 because of a lawyers’ strike today.

The adjournment followed a request from the lawyer of Malik Ammad, the man who filed the complaint against Rimsha Masih.

Rimsha has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after she was arrested from the low-income Mehria Jaffar area on the outskirts of Islamabad on August 16.

Groom stranded as bride flees with money

A bridegroom and about 50 of his marriage party were stranded in Rajasthan’s Barmer town for a week as the would-be bride disappeared right before the ceremony, after duping him of Rs.3.75 lakh, police said Monday.

A first information report (FIR) was registered against the bride and two men who had fixed the wedding after taking the money, they added. One of the men was arrested Monday.

The incident took place in Sadar area of Barmer, some 550 km from Jaipur.

Government rejects BJP’s demands to end parliament logjam

CIL earned Rs 5,600 cr more than notified price in FY’12: Govt

The government Monday said it has not taken any decision to discontinue e-auction of coal through which the world’s largest coal producer CIL has earned Rs 5,600 crore more than the notified price in 2011-12.

“During 2011-12, the subsidiary companies of CIL have earned Rs 5,600 crore more than the notified price of coal by selling coal through e-auction,” Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal told Rajya Sabha on Monday.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has launched a mobile version of its website to help cellphone users seamlessly access information on the move.

“The URL of the mobile website is pib.Gov.In/mobile. Mobile users who want the full functionality and display of the regular website can access it through the URL pib.Gov.In,” a PIB official said.

The new site has been customised to display latest press releases on the home screen and offers links to other matters on the website, he said.

‘Ironical that Bose did not get Nobel Prize’

PM has no right to silence: BJP

Keeping up its attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the alleged faulty allocation of coal blocks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said maintaining silence is a privilege not available to the head of government.

“The government has not given any response to the series of allegations in the coal allocation. The prime minister has invoked his right to silence… A right to silence is available to an accused in court, it is not available to a prime minister,” Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley told a group of journalists here.

BJP not giving us fair option: Khurshid

Ruling out cancellation of allotted coal blocks, Law Minister Salman Khurshid Monday said the opposition was not giving the Congress-led UPA government a fair option to end the deadlock over the issue that has led to the BJP stalling parliament for more than a week.

Talking to IANS in the Parliament House complex here, the law minister said the opposition’s offer was akin to offering someone a respectable funeral if he hangs himself.

“What they are saying is like ‘I will give you a respectable funeral if you hang yourself’,” Khurshid said.

Gas tanker tragedy: Special Cabinet announces compensation

Today’s Special Cabinet Meet, convened to discuss compensation to the victims of the gas tanker tragedy in Kannur, declared several packages under three categories. Briefing on Cabinet decisions here, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said special packages under three categories were mainly for the affected parties, affected area and precautionary measures to be taken for transportation of inflammable material in the event of the tragedy that stole 19 lives. The families of those dead in the tragedy will be given Rs 10 lakh each as solatium, he said.

India beat New Zealand by five wickets

India won the second cricket Test by five wickets and whitewashed New Zealand in the two-match series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here Monday.

Set a target of 261 in the second innings, India made 262 for five after Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 51 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 48. India had made 353 in the first innings.

New Zealand made 365 in the first innings and 248 in the second innings.

Sahayak system being reviewed: Antony

The system of providing ‘Sahayaks’ to officers and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) has been taken up for review following recommendations of the Standing Committee on Defence, government told the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to the House, Defence Minister AK Antony said, “As per recommendations of the Standing Committee on Defence, the system of Sahayaks in the Army has been taken up for review.”

Sahayaks are authorised to officers and JCOs in the Army as per their entitlement while serving with formations functioning on war establishment, he said.
