7 officials jailed for fraudulent land allocation

A special court Monday sentenced a former registrar of cooperative societies and six other government officials to one year jail in a Rs.4,000 crore fraudulent plot allotment scam, while four others got three years in jail.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Vinod Kumar convicted former registrar of cooperative societies (RCS) Narayan Diwakar and six public servants for their alleged involvement in the Rs.4,000 crore cooperative group housing scheme scam.

CPI warns of more problems if centre delays Telangana

CPI National secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy has demanded that the Centre concede separate Telangana State without losing time.

Addressing a public meeting on the congregation of CPI’s Telangana Prajaporu Yatra here this evening, Suravaram said that the Centre must amend the Constitution if necessary to respect the desire of Telangana people. It was not proper to the Centre to obstruct creation of separate State on the pretext that a resolution was not passed in the Assembly. He also said that the Seemandhra people have to respect the sentiments of the Telangana people.

UP Haj Arrangement will be over by Sep 11

The Uttar Pradesh government Monday asked officials to complete all arrangements by Sep 11 for the departure of Haj pilgrims from the state.

In separate letters written to district magistrates of Lucknow and Varanasi, Chief Secretary Jawwed Usmani directed them to review the progress of work in this regard by convening a meeting of the officials concerned.

The chief secretary pointed out that this year about 32,000 pilgrims would be visiting Saudi Arabia for Haj, out of which about 11,500 and 4,400 would be from Lucknow and Varanasi, respectively.

Logjam :Government, BJP refuse to bend, parliament crippled

The logjam over ‘coalgate’ crippled parliament for the ninth day Monday, with the BJP adamant on the cancellation of the controversial coal mines allocation and the government refusing to bow down.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram signalled the government’s desire to stand firm, by dubbing the BJP’s call for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation as “outrageous”.

“The demand for the prime minister’s resignation is outrageous, they know it will never be done,” the minister told the media here.

Spurned lover kills four, self

Spurned by the family of a girl he wanted to marry, a 23-year-old man Monday shot her dead along with three others and then killed himself, police said.

Ravi began the killing spree in Sanjay Enclave in Delhi, his first victim being Renu, a relative who was vocally opposed to his marrying teenager Baby.

When the house owner, Sheila, tried to come to the rescue of Renu, she too was gunned down, police said.

The twin murders took place in the morning.

Police commissioner’s plea to media for restraint

Bangalore City Police Commissioner B Jyotiprakash Mirji today requested the media to exercise retraint while publishing and telecasting “unverified” reports on the ongoing terror suspects investigations.

“The issue concerns national security, is also communally sensitive and should not vitiate law and order. I request the media to be more responsible and cooperate with police,” he said, addressing editors of print and electronic media after some speculative reports appearing in a section of the media.

Passengers can register their complaints/suggestions related to catering services rendered at stations on South Central Railway and also on trains on South Central Railway system over this helpline number.

Police arrest three chain snatchers, recover 31 tolas gold

The City Police on Monday arrested three alleged offenders who were allegedly involved in several cases of chain snatching.

Addressing a press conference, Assistance Commissioner of Police (Punjagutta Division) Venkata Narasaiah said that the accused – Shaik Mazhar, Syed Jaber and Mohd Sohai, aged between 19-20 years, were involved in chain snatching offences for the last six months. On a tip off, Punjagutta inspector P Sataiah along with his team, arrested the offenders and seized 31 tolas of stolen gold jewellery, worth about Rs 9.50 lakh from their possession.

Blair and Bush should face trial for war crimes in Iraq, demands Tutu

Tony Blair and George W Bush should be taken to the International Criminal Court in The Hague over the Iraq war, Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said.

Writing in the UK’s Observer newspaper, he accused the former leaders of lying about weapons of mass destruction.

The Iraq military campaign had made the world more unstable “than any other conflict in history”, he said.

Mr Blair responded by saying “this is the same argument we have had many times with nothing new to say”.

Case filed against MNS chief Raj Thackeray in Bihar

A complaint case was today filed in Nalanda district court against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for his comments against the people of Bihar.

A social activist Biresh Pandey filed the case in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Krishna Bihari Pandey under several sections of IPC.

The petitioner submitted that the people of Bihar felt insulted and their sentiments were hurt by Thackeray’s recent speech in which he had described Mumbai-based Biharis as infiltrators and threatened to drive them out of the city.

UP Govt not in favour of FDI: Akhilesh

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said his government was not in favour of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as it would cause loss to small traders.

Addressing a traders convention here, Yadav said that until and unless there was advice of the traders, no such
decision would be taken.

He claimed that it was the SP government which did not allowed imposition of Value Added Tax(VAT) in the state and
also abolished octroi in a bid to facilitate the traders.

Cop killed in road accident

An assistant sub-inspector of police was today killed in a road accident here in South 24 Parganas district.

Biswanath Chakraborty, 38, was going on his motorbike from Sonarpur when his two-wheeler clashed with a taxi coming from the opposite side, police said.

He was immediately rushed to a private nursing home where he was declared dead.

Chakraborty was posted in Baruipur police station.

YC and NSUI take out procession to protest MNS chief comments

Youth Congress and NSUI workers today took out a procession to protest against comments made by MNS chief Raj Thackeray against Biharis.

Led by the YC state unit president Lallan Kumar and former MLC Vijay Shankar Mishra, YC and NSUI workers held
protest march from the Akashwani Square to Dak Bunglow with 250 donkeys carrying photographs of Raj around their neck.

The protesters also shouted slogans against the MNS chief describing him as a “traitor” and demanding “capital
punishment” for him for his provocative speech last week.

India offers help to Tajikistan on unconventional energy

India on Monday offered to train Tajik personnel in the field of renewable energy and said it was willing to set up pilot projects in Tajikistan.

Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said the Indian government was ready to help Tajikistan in the field on unconventional energy by training its people and set up pilot projects so that it can learn the benefits of alternative energy models.

He was addressing industrialists from the two countries in the presence of Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon.

Chief Justice of India names Justice Kabir as his

Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia, who retires this month, has recommended the name of seniormost Supreme Court judge Justice Altamas Kabir as his successor, setting in motion the process of change of guard in the apex court.

Sources in the Law Ministry said Justice Kapadia, due to retire on September 28, recommended the name of Justice Kabir (64) recently.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to instruct JIPMER to revisit its decision to introduce new user charges as it would badly affect the poor people in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Over 12,000 acres of Defence land is under encroachment: Govt

About 12,364 acres of Defence land is under encroachment and the Defence Ministry has issued detailed instructions for ensuring vigilance, detection and prevention of such cases, the government said on Monday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Defence Minister AK Antony said, “About 12,364 acres of defence land is under illegal occupation or encroachment including by civilians.”

On the number of cases of alleged corruption relating to Defence land, he said, “Seven such cases of alleged corruption and irregularities regarding defence lands have been reported to the Ministry.”

Coal scam blackening country’s face: Narendra Modi

Attacking the Centre on the coal allocation controversy, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the scam was “blackening the country’s face”.

“On the lines of Gujarat, the Centre had decided to distribute soil health cards to farmers. I don’t know when they are going to do this. They are stuck in coal (scam),” Modi said addressing a national convention on agri-business here.

“The scam is blackening the country’s face as Delhi has got mired in coal.”
