BJP slams Uddhav Thackeray’s permit remark against Biharis

BJP on Tuesday hit out at Shiv Sena leader and NDA ally Uddhav Thackeray for his comments that Biharis living in Maharashtra should carry a permit, saying the party has fought since its inception for allowing all Indians to visit and live in any part of the country.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said Jan Sangh, the predecessor of the party, fought against the permit system in Jammu and Kashmir.

Uddhav Thackeray wants permit system for Biharis in Mumbai

Unfazed by strident criticism of his cousin Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray over his anti-Bihari remarks, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday sought a permit system to check influx of Bihari migrants into Mumbai.

Uddhav also declared that his party would not accept Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as NDA’s prime ministerial candidate if he continues to stick to his stand on supporting “traitors”.

2012 is not 1989: Chidambaram

Dismissing any comparison between coal block allocation issue and Bofors pay-offs controversy, Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday said “2012 is not 1989”.

“2012 is not 1989. Do not draw such comparisons”, Chidambaram said at the AICC media briefing when asked whether the Opposition was trying to re-enact a Bofors-like scenario.

The opposition had resigned en masse in 1989 following CAG report on the Bofors issue ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Chidambaram said the chief prosecutor in the Bofors case had finally said Rajiv Gandhi was not at all involved in it.

HC clears way for polls to Panchayat Raj Institutions

The Panchayat Raj Institutions in Andhra Pradesh will soon go for elections as the High Court here paved the way on Tuesday, asking the state government to fix the reservations at 50 per cent and submit a report to the State Election Commission in this connection.

The SEC will have to complete the election process within three months after receiving the report from the government, official sources here said.

CBI dictated my statement: Aarushi case witness

CBI witness and slain teenager Aarushi Talwar’s part-time maid told a special court here Tuesday that whatever was recorded in her statement was dictated to her by the probe agency.

Bharti Mandal, during her cross-examination before Special Judge S. Lal, said that she had never appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to get her statement recorded.

Following the witness’ remarks, the probe agency’s counsel took the maid outside the court for a few minutes.

The defence lodged a complaint over this and the court took a serious view on matter and reprimanded the CBI.

Sachin Tendulkar bowled thrice in a row in New Zealand series

Surprising as it may sound but senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s defence has been breached three times in a row in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.

After being bowled in the first innings of the first Test in Hyderabad and the first innings here, Tim Southee made it three in a row when he disturbed Tendulkar’s middle stump on the fourth day of the ongoing second Test.

Etala dismisses reports of TRS merger with Congress

Telangana Rashtra Samithi floor leader Etala Rajender on Tuesday dismissed the reports of possible merger of TRS with the Congress party.

Addressing a press conference at the TRS Legislature Party office, Etala Rajender described the merger reports as baseless and mere speculation. He said that the TRS would never merge with the Congress party and would continue its struggle till the formation of Telangana State.

HC grants bails to KA Paul in murder case

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to evangelist K A Paul, who is facing charges of his brother’s murder.

While granting conditional bail, the court asked Paul to submit a surety of Rs 1 lakh apart from surrendering his passport. The court also directed him to attend police station every week.

Paul was arrested on May 12, after a sting operation conducted by Ongole police in which he had offered Rs 5 crore bribe to a sub-inspector to eliminate the witness in his brother’s murder case.

Naidu held for protest on Fee Reimbursement issue

The police on Tuesday arrested Telugu Desam Party president Nara Chandrababu Naidu and other activists for staging dharna on the issue of reimbursement of fees at LB Nagar crossroads.

Addressing the dharna, Chandrababu Naidu said that the poor students were being distanced away from higher education in view of the confusion and chaos created by the Congress Government on the issue of reimbursement of fees. He alleged that the government lacked commitment over the implementation of reimbursement of fee to all the BCs, minorities and EBCs.

Dubai plans to scan inbound air passenger lists

The Dubai government is set to launch a new system in cooperation with many airlines to prevent blacklisted persons from entering the emirate by stopping them at their boarding points, a media report has said.

A database system will store information related to inbound travellers and the authorities will give permission to the passengers before they board a Dubai-bound plane.

Over 100,000 citizens fled Syria in Aug: UN

While the battle in Syria continues, United Nations on Tuesday said that over 100,000 people fled Syria in the month of August.

The fleeing Syrian citizens took refuge in the neighbouring countries, as per BBC report.

Headley was given fake currency notes to use in India

The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused David Coleman Headley was given counterfeit currency notes for use in India, the government said today.

“During investigation of the (26/11) case pertaining to the activities of David Coleman Headley and others it was revealed that fake Indian currency notes were given to him for using these in India,” Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh told Lok Sabha today in a written reply.

Rainfall batters Hyderabad city

Rainfall continued to batter city and threw road and rail traffic out of gear, turning key thoroughfares into cesspool. Low-lying areas of the city were inundated by incessant rainfall.

According to the Met department, 31. 4 mm rainfall was recorded till late evening. At least 17 trees were uprooted at different parts of the city. Major water logging was reported at Nampally, Chaderghat, Nadeem Colony, Talab Katta, Shaheen Nagar etc.

Nuclear power is actually as safe as air travel, even though people perceive it as dangerous, top nuclear scientist and ex-chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India (AECI) Anil Kakodkar said on Tuesday.
