‘Telangana will be our priority if voted to power’

Accusing the Government of indecision, BJP on Tuesday promised to accord “first priority” to creation of Telangana state if voted to power at the Centre, as its cadre tried to march towards the Prime Minister’s residence, forcing police to use tear gas shells against them.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley blamed “policy paralysis” of the UPA Government for its indecision on the separate state issue and accused it of “outsourcing” its job on the decision to a Committee headed by former judge.

Housewife attacked by drunken youths

A housewife was injured when she protested the verbal abuse of two drunken youth at Bijpur in North 24 Parganas district Tuesday, a day after a homoeopath was killed by eve teasers in the district.

Police said the home maker was slashed with a blade when she protested the abuse of the youth near a hooch den at Kanchrapara under Bijpur police station area.

The two, identified as Bhakto Debnath and Raj Chandra, were later arrested.

Yesterday, an elderly homeopath was beaten to death at Barasat for protesting against two drunken youths passing lewd comments on women.

Sunita Williams to undertake 6th space walk today

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams and her Japanese colleague, will again venture outside the International Space Station o Wednesday to complete the maintenance tasks they were unsuccessful in during their last outing.

In the wake of the unsuccessful attempt to install a replacement power-switching unit on the truss of the International Space Station, NASA’s Williams and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Engineer Akihiko Hoshide, will venture outside for a second time in six days to complete the work.

This unexpected spacewalk has been scheduled to take place today morning.

Suspected terrorist arrested

A suspected terrorist was arrested by National Investigation Agency here, police said on Tuesday.

The man, identified as Anis, was arrested yesterday from Banguspura locality by a joint team of NIA from Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh Police, they said.

Anis was working for terror outfits and was involved in a fake currency racket, police said.

The NIA team, which took Anis to Hyderabad on transit remand, made the arrest following his mobile surveillance.

Quota bill: 18 lakh UP employees on strike today

Lodging protest against Union Cabinet’s move of clearing reservation in promotions for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in government jobs, over 18 lakh employees will hold a state-wide strike on Wednesday.

All the employees of the Uttar Pradesh government, except those in emergency services, will be staging the protest strike.

Shailendra Dubey, president of ‘Sarvjan Hitai Sanrakshan Samiti’ said yesterday, that employees of all the departments under its banner, would stage protest meetings against the move at the district-level and also in the state capital.

Three Lucknow students die in accident

Three Lucknow university students were killed and three injured when their car turned turtle here late Tuesday, police said.

The accident took place after a tyre of the car burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle. Bumping into a divider, the car overturned.

Senior Superintendent of Police R.K. Chaturvedi told IANS that the Tata Safari SUV met with an accident in Krishnanagar near Murdhaiya village on Shaheed Path.

The injured were admitted to hospital and their condition is stated to be serious.

Italy ready to intervene militarily in Syria

Italy would be ready to send military forces to Syria if President Bashar al-Assad is toppled, Italian Defence Minister Giampaolo Di Paola has said.

“Italy has the ability to do it,” Di Paola said in an interview to Rai state television.

“I think that the international community would have to contribute,” he said, stressing that he was not endorsing intervention.

Di Paola’s comments followed a meeting of Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi and other government officials to make plans for what they dubbed the “post Assad” period.

Iran to get full control of Bushehr in December

Iran will be on its own with its first nuclear power plant after Russia officially hands Bushehr over at the end of December, a Russian project manager said.

The station began operating at full capacity Aug 31 as the reactor of Bushehr’s Unit 1 was brought up to 100 percent of its projected capacity.

“We believe that the unit will be transferred to the client in the last week of December,” Russian contractor Atomstroyexport’s Iran construction chief Igor Mezenin said.

Before that time, a number of trials are to be completed, he added.

Police guarding Lebanese envoy’s house in Syria killed

Armed men abducted and “brutally killed” two Syrian policemen guarding the residence of the Lebanese ambassador to Damascus, according to Lebanese newspaper As Safir.

The police officers guarding Michel al-Khoury’s residence were killed last week.

The envoy’s residence is located in Yaafor suburb of Damascus. Many diplomats have vacated the area amid sanctions against Syria.

According to As Safir, al-Khoury and Lebanese charge d’affaires Rami Murtada are currently in Beirut.

Amit Shah named in Tulsi Prajapati chargesheet

Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, a close aide of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was among 20 people named by the CBI in its charge sheet in the Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case for allegedly entering into criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.

Former state police chief PC Pande, IPS officers OP Mathur, DG Vanzara and Geetha Johri and Dy SP RK Patel were also also named in the charge sheet submitted in the court of judicial magistrate DR Joshi at Danta in Banaskantha district.

The three senior IPS officers named in the chargesheet included two who retired.

UN chief asks for help to end Syrian conflict

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on all outside parties, especially countries in the Middle East, “to do all they can” to help end the Syrian conflict, Xinhua reported.

Ban made the appeal in an address to the UN General Assembly, which met Tuesday to discuss the prolonged crisis that has plagued Syria since March 2011.

“The continuing militarization of the conflict is deeply tragic and highly dangerous. I appeal to all outside parties, especially the countries in the region, to do all they can to end this trend,” the UN chief was quoted as saying.

Hagman wins battle against cancer

Actor Larry Hagman says he has won his battle against throat cancer.

The 80-year-old was diagnosed with the illness just before his shooting schedule of the relaunch of TV drama “Dallas” in June.

However, he continued to work and is thankful to the show’s bosses who gave him time in the middle for his treatment.

“Yes, I got cancer while shooting ‘Dallas’. It was a true challenge and it wasn’t fun. I had to get chemotherapy and radiation treatment,” okmagazine.com quoted him as saying.

Cong promises free laptops to students in poll-bound Gujarat

Continuing with poll promises in the election-bound state, Congress on Tuesday announced it would provide free laptops to every student in Gujarat after class XII.

The party has also promised to “overhaul” the eduction sector in the state, saying that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had ruined the education system in the last 10 years.

Congress has also promised reservation in private schools for poor students and 30 per cent fee concession to them.

1812 war museum opens in Moscow

A museum has been built in Moscow to commemorate Russia’s victory in the 1812 Patriotic War against Napoleon, RIA Novosti reported.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev Tuesday attended a ceremony to open the museum, built as part of Russia’s celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of its victory.

The museum was due to open around 1912 to coincide with the 100th anniversary, but the building was never built. Most of its exhibits were handed over to the Historical Museum in Moscow.

Hezbollah denies having chemical weapons

Lebanon’s Shia group Hezbollah has no chemical weapons, but enough missiles to inflict a considerable damage on Israel in case of an assault, the group’s leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has said.

“We have no chemical weapons and we do not need it. But we are capable of hitting Israel targets. Israelis understand this and take it into account,” Nasrallah told a Lebanese TV channel.

Nasrallah reiterated that Hezbollah has a list of important targets in Israel and its missiles are aimed to hit them.

Russian gets compensated for train rush hour problems

A man in Russia’s Siberia region got 7,500 rubles ($230) in compensation for “moral damage” that he had suffered during a rush hour train ride, RIA Novosti reported.

The passenger in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk filed a lawsuit in February, saying that he bought a train ticket Oct 31, 2010 but had to spend more than two hours in the train’s crowded vestibule as he was unable to get inside a passenger car.

He said he was unable to breathe normally as well as suffered physically and morally, when other passengers were swearing, pushing and stepping on his feet.

Katrina Kaif turns down 1.65m dirham offer from Pakistan

Bollywood star Katrina Kaif recently turned down a 1.65 million dirham offer from a Karachi-based media house owner to become the guest for a one-night show as well as to endorse a brand.

This is not the first time Katrina has received offers for appearance or endorsement deals in Pakistan. In fact, Katrina keeps getting regular offers from Pakistan to make an appearance or do a show.

Katrina has said no to all such requests which might require her to cross the border into Pakistan.

Ileana D’Cruz in Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Bullet Raja’?

Actress Ileana D’Cruz, who makes her Bollywood debut with “Barfi”, will reportedly be seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s “Bullet Raja” opposite Saif Ali Khan.

“Nothing has been confirmed so far but yes they are considering Ileana D’ Cruz to play female lead opposite Saif in ‘Bullet Raja’,” a source told IANS.

The film’s narrative will be set against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh-based mafia, and it will deal with the underworld.

Ileana will also be seen with Shahid Kapoor in “Phata Poster Nikla Hero”. The film goes on the floors in November.

Actor Sonu Sood has been approached again for playing the iconic role of Sher Khan in the remake of Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Zanjeer’, after Arjun Rampal could not go ahead due to date issues.
Even though Sonu’s name was earlier considered for the role, the makers went ahead and finalised Arjun Rampal.

But later due to date issues when Arjun couldn’t be part of the project, the makers went to the ‘Dabangg’ baddie again.

Using cellphones, tablets before bedtime affects sleep

If you happen to be one of those who often find it difficult to fall asleep at night, the reason could be usage of cellphones or tablets at bedtime.

Researchers in the US have found using an electronic gadget for just two hours before the bedtime can cause sleep problems, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute believes the displays cause melatonin suppression.

Melatonin is the chemical that controls our body clock.

Researchers believe that the teenagers are particularly susceptible to the problem.

IMG to hear 25 out of 58 coal block allottees this week

A list of 25 coal block allottees has been firmed up for presentation before the Inter- Ministerial Group later this week, raising questions over the deadline of September 15 being met for submitting the final report with regard to the fate of 58 blocks.

Hindalco, Tata Power, Monnet Ispat, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd and Usha Martin are among the allottees which would be called by the IMG, a source said.

Sources said the 25 coal block allottees would make presentation during the three-day meeting of Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) from September 6.
