Green tea boosts memory

Scientists now have an explanation for why green tea is good for the brain — it lies in the chemical properties that affect the production of brain cells, improving memory and spatial learning.

“Green tea is a popular beverage across the world,” said Yun Bai, professor from the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China.

“There has been plenty of scientific attention on its use in helping prevent cardiovascular diseases, but now there is emerging evidence that its chemical properties may impact cellular mechanisms in the brain.”

Chinese Defence Minister gives Rs 1 lakh as ‘gift’ to IAF pilots

It was an unusual gift from Chinese Defence Minister Gen Liang Guang Lie to two Indian Air Force pilots — Rs one lakh in cash.

The pilots were given cash in two envelopes after they flew the visiting minister by special IAF aircraft from Mumbai to Delhi on Monday, sources told PTI here on Wednesday.

They said after seeing off Liang, the pilots checked their ‘unusual gift’ in sealed envelopes and then realised it was Rs one lakh cash in Indian currency.

Cyber crime targets 5.4 mn Australians

About 5.4 million Australians were targeted by cyber crimes, which cost the country 1.65 billion Australian dollars ($1.68 billion) in the past 12 months, according to Norton’s Cybercrime report 2012 released Thursday.

Hackers and cyber criminals were diverting their attention to new platforms such as smart phones and social networking, the report by the anti-virus company revealed.

Globally, there were more than 556 million victims and the cost were $110 billion, reported Xinhua.

Pension scheme launched for contractual teachers

The state government on Wednesday launched a pension scheme for over 2.5 lakh contractual teachers in Bihar with prospective effect from January, 2013.

Under the pension scheme to be managed by the asset management company – Unit Trust of India (UTI), the contractual teachers will have to contribute Rs 200 per month with the state government chipping in with equal contribution in pension account of the beneficiary.

Cases filed against Raj, Udhav Thackeray

Two cases were filed against Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and his cousin Udhav Thackeray in Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur on Wednesday for their hate speech against Bihari migrants.

James Quadrez, a social activist filed a case against the two in the court of Bhagalpur district chief judicial magistrate SP Malviya under various provisions of the IPC.

He alleged that ‘Bihari bashing’ by the two Maharashtra leaders in a series of hate speech had hurt the sentiments of the people of the state and posed a threat to the unity and integrity of the country.

Costa Rica hit by 7.6 magnitude earthquake three killed

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale has has struck off in Costa Rican capital San Jose, the US Geological Survey said on Wednesday.

According to USGS, the major quake struck near the Pacific Coast at 8:42 am and the epicenter is reported to be in western Costa Rica about 141 kms from San Jose and 80kms from the south of the town of Liberia.

Constable rapes girl at New Delhi railway station

A 21-year-old woman was sexually harassed here by a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable who has been arrested, said police Wednesday.

The incident took place Tuesday in New Delhi Railway Station’s dormitory situated on the second floor.

Following the victim’s allegation, constable Pintu Kumar, 24, who joined RPF two years ago, was arrested from his residence Wednesday. A rape case has been registered against him, a police official said.

Two teenagers killed in Sri Lanka explosion

At least two teenagers were killed and three children injured today due to an accidental explosion in Sri Lanka’s North West town of Kalpitiya, police said.

The victims in the beach in Kandakuliya had played with an object which was washed ashore around 3 pm local time.

One of them was said to have slammed the object against a turtle shell when it exploded, they said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday expressed deep shock over the Sivakasi firecracker tragedy in Tamil Nadu and condoled the deaths in the accident.

“The Prime Minister has expressed deep shock over the Sivakasi fireworks tragedy in which many lives were lost in Tamil Nadu this (Wednesday) morning,” said a release from Prime Minister’s Office.

Manmohan Singh said he stood with the people of Tamil Nadu in the hour of grief and conveyed his “heartfelt condolences” to the members of the bereaved families.

Six arrested for Sivakasi fire tragedy

Six people have been arrested for the blaze in a firecracker unit in Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi town that killed 38 people, police said Thursday.

“Six people have been arrested in connection with the firecracker unit accident. The arrests include Paul Pandi who had taken the property on lease where he operated the cracker unit,” a police official told IANS from Virudhunagar district, around 500 km from here where the firecracker manufacturing hub of Sivakasi lies.
