Bandh in Ahmedabad locality over anti-Islam film

A bandh was observed in the predominantly Muslim Juhapura area of the city today to protest against the controversial anti-Islam film made in the USA.

“Retail shops, eateries, auto-rickshaws among others joined the bandh. Educational institutes, however, were kept out of it,” social activist Fazal Bahelim told PTI.

Local Muslim organisations had called the bandh.

There was no untoward incident, a police official said.

Hyderabad police arrest Vimalakka, others

The police on Friday arrested Telangana United Front Leader Vimalakka as a precautionary measure before the Telangana March.

The police on Friday morning went to her residence at Domalguda and took her into custody. Apart from Vimalakka, the police also arrested a few activists who opposed the arrest of Vimalakka. Meanwhile, tension prevailed at the Domalguda for some time when the police arrested Vimalakka.

A Delhi court today issued fresh non-bailable warrant against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray along with summonses against him and Shiv Sena leaders Bal Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray in a host of complaints for their alleged remarks against Bihar natives.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate ManishYaduvanshi issued NBWs against Raj Thackeray and ordered its
execution by November 17 after he failed to appear before him in response to the August 31 summons and sought exemption from personal appearance instead.

Over 200,000 British kids fail spelling test

Around 237,000 six-year-old children — 40 percent of the total from all over Britain — were unable to read 32 words correctly out of 40 in a spelling test.

The children struggled with words like “farm”, “goat” and “shine”, the Daily Mail reported.

Pupils were tested for the first time this year on how well they use the traditional phonics method of reading, where children learn the letter sounds of English.

Only nine percent scored full marks, and 21 percent failed to cross the halfway mark, according to results released by the Department for Education.

Pilot fakes plane crash, then proposes to girlfriend

A pilot of a private flight with his girlfriend tricked her into believing that they were about to crash. He asked her to read the emergency manual, where it was written “Will you marry me?”

Ryan Thompson from Chicago took his girlfriend, Carlie, on a private flight over the city, where he planned to propose, the Daily Mail reported.

Mid-flight, he tricked her into believing that the plane’s controls were malfunctioning. He asked the woman he needed her to read the emergency procedure to him.

“Honey, I need you to remain calm,” Thompson told her.

BJP attacks PM on corruption at national council meet

‘India will become open defecation free in a decade’

Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Jairam Ramesh Thursday said it was the objective of the union government to make India an open defecation free country in ten years.

“It is our objective to make the country open defecation free in the next 10 years. This is a very important issue which needs to be made a national as well as a political issue,” said Ramesh.

He was speaking at the pre-launch of ‘Nirmal Bharat Yatra’ which is a 55-day campaign for spreading awareness about sanitisation and cleanliness in five states of the country.

Kudankulam nuclear power plant is safe: NDMA

n the midst of ongoing protests against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, the National Disaster Management Authority on Friday said all nuclear installations in the country were safe and there was no need for any worry for the people living in the surrounding areas.

“There is no need for any concern for any of the plants,” NDMA vice-chairman M Shashidhar Reddy said at a press conference here.

Reddy said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, senior government officials and experts have repeatedly said there would be no compromise on the safety standard of any of nuclear plants.

In an attack this week a woman was home alone Saturday night when she woke to find a man at her screen door, the WAtoday.com reported.

The man was stark naked except for a covering over his face and head, leaving only his eyes uncovered and left after the woman shut the door and locked herself in her bedroom.

A 20-year-old Brazilian woman student is auctioning off her virginity to the highest bidder to raise cash to build homes for poverty-stricken families, the Daily Mail reported.

Catarina Migliorini, a physical education student of Italian descent, has till now been offered $155,000.

She hopes to pump in the money into a non-governmental organisation that will construct houses in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

The girl rejected claims that she was a prostitute, and said she still believed in love, the daily reported.

Thirty-one percent of young Australians admit to reading and writing on their Facebook page while taking a toilet break, according to a survey.

Facebook is overtaking the magazine rack in the toilet closet, the Herald Sun reported Thursday quoting the survey.

But it wasn’t the most popular place. Sixty-six percent of respondents admitted to checking their Facebook page after they head off to bed.

1 killed, 2 Assam Rifles jawans injured in blast in Manipur

A 60-year old man was killed and three others including two Assam Rifles jawans were injured on Friday when a powerful bomb exploded followed exchange of fire with insurgents in Manipur’s Chandel district.

Official sources said the bomb, allegedly planted by insurgents to target security personnel at a roadside at Kwatha Khunou. went off this afternoon at about 1.30pm, injuring two Assam Rifles jawans of 24th Assam Rifles battalion who were patrolling the area near Manipur-Myanmar border.

Three week delay for issue of new gas connections; no ban

The Govt said it has not banned issue of fresh cooking gas (LPG) connections and there was only a temporary three-week hiatus in new allotments pending elimination of duplicate connections.

State-owned oil firms are carrying out a massive nationwide exercise to eliminate users having multiple connections at the same addresses.

Pending this, new allotments are on hold, an official said.

BJP to protest government policies

The BJP on Friday said it would go to the people to expose the government on the issue of coal blocks allocation, foreign equity in multibrand retail and capping the supply of subsidised cooking gas.
