Hajj and Umra training camp

Three of family shot dead

Three members of a family were shot dead by relatives over a land dispute in Jharkhand, police said Sunday.

Jaipal Yadav, his cousin Jagdish and mother-in-law Batti Devi were killed by four men Saturday night in Sehal Tetratoli village in Gumla, around 130 km from here.

Jaipal’s wife Sumitra Devi was injured in the shooting. The killers fled.

Quake hits India’s northeast

An earthquake of moderate intensity jolted India’s northeast Sunday morning. Officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The quake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale.

According to the Regional Seismological Centre here, the epicentre lay in Phek district of Nagaland.

Besides Meghalaya and Nagaland, the other states which felt the tremors include Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, an official added.

India’s northeast is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.

Terms of Indira-Abdullah 1975 accord were never fulfilled: Mustafa Kamal

UPA out to gag free opinion on Sonia, Rahul on the net: RSS

The RSS has alleged that the UPA government is out to gag people’s free opinion on the net, specially those regarding Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul, through requests to sites like Google to remove content and by seeking users’ data and account details.

“The government of India is seeking to gag the voice of the public, expressed most freely on the net. It has sent 96 requests to the Google site alone from June to December 2011 fo removal of content,” RSS mouthpiece Organiser said in the editorial of its latest edition.

Five arrested for converted Muslim MLA’s assault

Five people were arrested for allegedly beating up Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her Muslim husband.

“Five persons suspected to have been involved in the attack on the woman MLA have been arrested from here,” Superintendent of Police Pradip Pujari said.

Nath and her second husband were beaten up and injured when they were attacked on Friday night in a hotel by a group of people who were angry over her second marriage without divorcing her first husband.

The MLA and her husband who were escorted to Guwahati have received medical treatment and were reported to be out of danger.

Plastics factories in Shastripuram get notices

The efforts of Courageous local youths are getting fruitful. They were protesting against the pollution caused by nearby plastic factories in Shastripuram area.

Commissioner of Municipal Corporation Mr. Krishna Babu visited the area along with the officials and elicited information about the plastic factories. He expressed his surprise when he saw heaps of garbage. He enquired the officers about the number of plastic factories and the number of factories which were served notices.

Sharad Yadav hits out at Kalam over Sonia comments

JD(U) president Sharad Yadav on Sunday hit out at former president APJ Abdul Kalam for his comments that he was ready to appoint Sonia Gandhi as prime minister in 2004 despite intense lobbying against her.

Yadav, who is also the NDA convenor, said “his (Kalam’s) conscience has woken up late. It is for self-aggrandisement. We used to respect him a lot but now are very saddened after such comments”.

Pranab meets Cong MPs, MLAs in Hyderabad; fire breaks out at venue

UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee today met ruling Congress MPs, MLAs and MLCs as part of his campaign for the July 19 Presidential election.

Presidential candidate of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Pranab Mukherjee arrived here Sunday on a day-long visit to galvanize support for his candidature.

Protest by a small group of pro-Telangana supporters greeted Mukherjee outside the Begumpet airport. Raising slogans of ‘Jai Telangana’, the protesters tried to stop his convoy but police foiled their attempt.

The protesters belonging to various pro-Telangana groups wanted Mukherjee to spell out his stand on the demand for statehood to Telangana.

CVC mulls enquiry to check Railways’ Tatkal flaws

Amid widespread complaints of irregularities in the Tatkal scheme, the Central Vigilance Commission is considering launch of an enquiry to ascertain whether Railway officials are involved in malpractices.

Official sources said the CVC is likely to launch an enquiry either by its own officials or through the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Railways Ministry to verify reported instances of alleged irregularities in distribution of Tatkal tickets and collusion of some Railway officials with some private persons in misusing the facility.

Booking of Tatkal tickets to start at 1000 hrs from July 10

With a view to further improve the delivery of Tatkal tickets to passengers, the Raliways Ministry has decided that with effect from July 10 booking of Tatkal ticket will start at 1000 hrs on the previous day of journey from train originating station instead of 0800 hrs at present.

No authorised agents, including agents of IRCTC and RTSAs/RTAs will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets from 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs.

The existing restriction of not allowing these agents booking of general tickets on the opening day from 0800 hrs to 1000 hrs will also continue, an official statement said.

Spot-fixing: BCCI bans five cricketers

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has banned five players accused of spot-fixing in a sting operation during this year’s Indian Premier League, according to reports.

While TP Sudhindra (Deccan Chargers) has been banned for life, Shalabh Srivastava (Kings XI Punjab) has been banned from playing for a period of five years.

The other three – Mohnish Mishra (Pune Warriors) and Amit Yadav (Kings XI Punjab) and Abhinav Bali, a Delhi cricketer who now represents Himachal Pradesh in domestic cricket – have been handed a year’s ban each.

No disability pension if injured off-duty: SC

An Army personnel cannot claim disability pension if he or she gets hurt in an accident while on leave as it has no link with official discharge of duty, the Supreme Court has held.

A bench of justices B S Chauhan and J S Khehar said that in such cases, courts should not interfere with the findings of the medical board about the cause of accident and eligibility of the personnel to claim the benefit.

The destruction of the second holiest Muslim shrine of the Valley in a mysterious blaze on Monday threw Kashmiris into a state of shock and mourning, reminding one of a similar tragedy in 1995 when the shrine of the Valley’s patron saint, Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali, was destroyed in a blaze in central Kashmir’s Charar-e-Sharief town.

Man waves shoe at Pakistani minister

An angry activist of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) waved a shoe at a minister of Sindh province during his address to party workers in Hyderabad city, Geo News reported.

Provincial Law Minister Ayaz Soomro was addressing PPP workers at the Circuit House in Hyderabad, when a party activist named Imran waved a shoe at him, complaining that the PPP leaders and ministers did not provide jobs despite promises.

Imran said they also failed to help the flood victims in the province.

Other PPP activists present on the occasion later drove Imran out of the gathering, the report said.
