Obama discusses Iran, Syria with UAE crown prince

US President Barack Obama has discussed current volatile situation in Iran and Syria as well as global energy prices with UAE’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan, the White House said.

The two leaders discussed the ongoing negotiations with Iran on its nuclear programme and the three Gulf islands whose sovereignty is disputed between the UAE and Iran, said a joint statement issued after the meeting held at the White House yesterday.

Not invited to dinner, man kills neighbour

A man killed his neighbour in Uttar Pradesh early Thursday for not inviting him to a dinner party, police said.

Salim was killed by his neighbour Nizamuddin with a brick in Bhimnagar district, 470 km from here, police said.

Nizamuddin hit Salim with the brick until he collapsed, Superintendent of Police Tehsildar Singh told IANS. The accused is now on the run.

The assailant was angry that while all neighbours were invited by Salim to the dinner Wednesday, he did not get an invitation.

Salim had organised the dinner at his home on occasion of completion of a religious ritual.

AP HC reserves judgement on Jagan’s bail plea

The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday reserved its judgment on YSR Congress party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s bail petition for July 4.

Justice S Govinda Rajulu concluded the hearing on the petition today.

While noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani argued for Jagan, senior counsel Ashok Bhan represented the CBI.

The CBI counsel had argued that the case involved financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 43,000 crore and the CBI is investigating the fund flow to Jagan?s companies.

Petrol prices will be raised after presidential poll: Mamata

Refusing to attach much importance to the cut in petrol prices announced Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the rates have been lowered in view of the upcoming presidential poll and these would be raised later.

“The price has been reduced because of the presidential poll. They will increase it later,” said Banerjee at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings.

She also emphasised that crude prices have gone down by Rs.100 per barrel (159 litres). “So they should have reduced it by Rs.10 to Rs.30 per litre.”

Russian army to get first indigenous UAV in 2014

The first domestically-developed strike unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will be put in service with the Russian Armed Forces by the end of 2014, a defence industry official said.

In April, the defence ministry issued a technical specification for the development of the drone.

The new aircraft is expected to have a modular structure and be able to carry various types of equipment and armament.

Russian exorcist stabs wife to death

A man in Russia’s St. Petersburg city has been placed in a psychiatric ward after he attempted to exorcise the devil from his wife by stabbing her with knives and a screwdriver, prosecutors said.

The failed exorcism was triggered by a family argument, but was apparently anticipated because the suspect, Yury Simakov, prepared the knives beforehand, they said.

After getting into an argument with his wife in their apartment in St. Petersburg, Simakov stuck three knives into her vital organs.

Assange served extradition notice

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been served with an extradition notice by British police, BBC reported. He is wanted in Sweden on sex assault charges.

The 40-year-old Australian national, who took refuge at Ecuador’s embassy in London last week and asked for political asylum in the South American country, was requested to present himself at a police station Friday.

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled two weeks ago that the founder of the whistle-blowing website should be extradited to Sweden where he is wanted on sex assault charges, RIA Novosti reported.

Bail application of Sadhvi Pragya Singh rejected

The bail application filed by key accused in the Malegaon 2008 blast Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur on medical ground was today rejected by the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA)court today. “Sadhvi had filed for bail on the ground that she needs to be operated for her lumber spondylitis but it got rejected,” one of her lawyers Rameshwar Gite said. “The court rejected the bail after observing that the Sadhvi can undergo the operation even when she is in custody,” said another of her lawyer Ganesh Sovani.

Hyderabad Passport offices to work on weekend

With the surging demand for passports and glitches in online applications, the external affairs ministry Thursday announced that passport offices will remain open this weekend in various cities including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur and Goa.

The Regional Passport Offices (RPOs), including Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) under their jurisdiction, will remain open in Delhi and Bangalore Saturday and Sunday, it said.

Woman suicide bomber held in Russia

(IANS/RIA Novosti) A 19-year-old woman recruited by an extremist group to carry out a suicide bombing in Russia’s Dagestan republic has been arrested in neighbouring Chechnya, officials said.

The woman, a resident of Kabardino-Balkaria republic, was arrested in Chechen capital Grozny, said a spokesman for the Chechen interior ministry.

Police seized a “martyrdom letter” addressed to the woman’s relatives along with extremist literature, the spokesman said.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf today called for the projection of the soft image of Pakistan through public diplomacy by encouraging people-to-people contacts, cultural exchanges and promotion of business and trade. Baby boy stolen by co-passenger in train

A two-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly stolen from her mother’s custody by a co-passenger at Bandra terminus here, police said today. According to police, Puja Singh(20), a resident of Loni in UP, traveled from Delhi to Mumbai in a train and reached Bandra terminus railway station last evening. “During the journey, a woman who introduced herself as Niha (30) had befriended Puja Singh,” said a police officer at Nirmal Nagar police station.

Maoists set ablaze road construction machinery in Vizag

Suspected Maoists from Galikonda Area Committee set a hydraulic excavator (JCB Proclainer) on fire in Jamparlova area of GK Veedhi mandal in the Agency area of the Visakhapatnam district last night. Police said that about 40 armed rebels, including a few women, doused the hydraulic excavator with petrol and torched it. The ultras also asked the workers living in nearby shelters what was the purpose of laying the road, police said.

Police recovers Rs 2.05 lakh stolen cash, one held

Just four days after the crime, the city police arrested one person and recovered snatching cash of over Rs 2.05 lakh out of Rs 2,05,380 from him here today. In a release, police here said the accused Mohammed Rukhsan Khan (23) of Chaderghat snached the cash bag from Mr Dasari Mogulaiah, a temporary worker in APSRTC, Kachiguda bus Pass section when he was going to deposit it at the Central Bus Station. On credible information, the police apprehended the accused at Chaderghat in the city.

Maharashtra ATS to seek Jindal’s custody after DP finishes probe

Maharashtra ATS will seek the custody of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks handler Abu Jindal after Delhi Police finish their probe, sources in the ATS today confirmed and added that a designated court of the city has also issued warrant against him as he is an accused in the 2006 Aurangabad arms case. BMJRFT to open new dialysis centre in city

Elevated corridor only after Inner Ring Road: Minister

Secondary Education Minister K Parthasarthi and MP Lagadapati Rajgopal clarified an elevated corridor would be constructed on NH 9 near Kanakadurga Temple only after completion of work on Inner Ring Road. Addressing a joint press conference with Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajgopal and VGTUDA Vice-chairman GSRKR Vijay Kumar here today, the Minister explained the construction of elevated corridor would be started only after the completion of work on Inner Ring Road. He said Rs 130 crore was sanctioned for the construction of inner ring road and works worth Rs100 crore completed.

NIA moves court for Hamza’s custody

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Thursday moved a Delhi court seeking custody of Abu Jindal Hamza, alias Zabiuddin Ansari, a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

The NIA filed the application for custody of Hamza before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav, who would next take up the matter July 4.
