Omar Abdullah orders immediate restoration of gutted shrine

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has ordered immediate restoration of gutted Dastageer Sahib Shrine at Khanyar strictly as per its heritage characteristics.

“The restoration of the revered Shrine should be strictly based on its heritage characteristics,” Omar told the Waqaf Board at a high-level meeting convened to discuss measures for restoration of Shrine last evening.

The Head of the INTACH, J and K Chapter, Mohammad Saleem Beg presented the images, photographs and digital documentation of the heritage structure of the 200-year-old Shrine.

‘Don’t teach maths or physics to kids on Thursdays’

Schools should not teach difficult subjects like mathematics and physics to children on Thursdays because it was “the hardest day of the week”, Russia’s chief sanitary doctor has said in a recommendation.

“Children have their own bio-rhythms and Thursday is the hardest day of the week,” RIA Novosti quoted Gennady Onishchenko as telling the Ekho Moskvy radio station in an interview.

“Therefore, it is not recommended to teach difficult subjects like mathematics and physics on Thursdays because those subjects require a heavier load on the brain,” he said.

22% of Pakistanis having a favourable view of India is actually a slight improvement from 14% in 2011.

Monsoon to be a week late in Delhi

Delhi would continue to reel under the searing heat for at least another week as the monsoon would be missing its annual scheduled date of reaching capital – June 29, the weather office said on Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), till June 28 rains were 71 per cent below average in the city as the monsoon winds had not advanced from Uttar Pradesh over Delhi and its neighbouring areas.

“The winds have reached Uttar Pradesh but it will take around a week for them to reach Delhi,” said an IMD official.

Arvind Netam suspended from Congress

Cracking the whip, Congress on Thursday suspended tribal leader Arvind Netam from the party with immediate effect hours after he backed P A Sangma in the Presidential race.

“Arvind Netam has been suspended from the party with immediate effect”, Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

The announcement came close on the heels of 70-year-old Netam, a former Union Minister, who jointly addressed a press conference with Sangma today and made a strong plea for support to the BJP-backed opposition candidate.

No foreigners at Egypt president’s inauguration

Egyptian president-elect Mohamed Morsi has said there will be no foreign guests at his inauguration ceremony.

Morsi will be inaugurated Saturday in Cairo.

“I was categorically against the presence of any foreigner at the president’s swearing-in ceremony,” he said during a meeting with editors of national media outlets.

Only Egyptian citizens should be able to attend such an event, he added.

Morsi said US diplomats had requested his meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday.

24-year-old woman killed by family

A 24-year-old teacher was allegedly killed by her mother and brother in Kanjhawla, near the capital, after she refused to stay with her husband and wanted to marry another person from a different caste.

The victim, identified as Deepti Chikara, was allegedly pressurised into a marriage in January after her family rejected her relationship with an engineer who was from a different caste. She returned home soon after her marriage and got in touch with her boyfriend again, much to the rage of her family.

Teacher strips girl in class

A girl was allegedly stripped in class by a woman teacher in West Bengal after she ignored the latter’s diktat on dress code, police officials said on Thursday.

The Class 7 student of the Beri Gopalpur Adarsha Uccha Vidyalaya in Gaighata area of North 24-Parganas district faced the humiliation after she did not follow instructions on wearing a specific uniform on Thursdays.

“As I didn’t wear a particular dress I am supposed to wear on Thursday according to school rules, the teacher stripped me off my skirt in front of the whole class,” said the student.

India not to share info on Jundal with Pakistan

India will not share with Pakistan any information related to Syed Zabiuddin alias Abu Jundal who was arrested by the Delhi Police for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai carnage, sources in the Home Ministry said on Thursday.

Zabiuddin is being interrogated by law enforcement agencies and the ministry does not want its investigations hampered in any manner by sharing such information with Pakistan.

The sources said that Zabiuddin, an Indian national, holds a Pakistani passport and two Pakistani identity cards. “This indicates Pakistan’s complicity,” a source said.

17 Naxals killed in encounter

Seventeen suspected Naxals have been killed in an encounter with CRPF in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada area. Six CRPF personnel have also been critically injured. The 6-hour Naxal-CRPF encounter ended on Friday morning at the Basuguda police station in Bijapur in Chhattisgarh. Two jawans who were seriously injured have been shifted to Raipur.

17 naxals killed, 6 CRPF jawans injured in encounter

Sixteen naxalites were killed and six CRPF jawans injured after a fierce overnight encounter in the jungles of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh.

The encounter, which took place in the jungles of Silger, a “liberated” Maoist zone between the naxal hotbed of Jagargunda and Basaguda in Dantewada, was launched last night by the CRPF from three directions. Two Maoists have also been arrested after the encounter.

Uma Bharti gets death threats on phone

Firebrand BJP leader Uma Bharti has received death threat on phone, reports said on Friday.

Bharti, who is an MLA from Uttar Pradesh, received as many as six phone calls warning her of dire consequences.

The caller identified himself as Anuj Shrivastava, but his identity is yet unknown.

As per reports, the first call on Bharti’s mobile number came on June 26 while she was on her way from Bhopal to Delhi on Bhopal Express.

But as the calls continued, her security officer Pradip Tomar lodged an FIR at the Shyamala Hills police station in Bhopal.

20 killed in Pakistan blast

A roadside bomb ripped through a bus in Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 20 Shia passengers and wounding 25 others, local media reported.

The blast took place around 6.00 p.m. in Hazarganji area of Balochistan province, Xinhua quoted the Urdu channel AAJ TV as saying.

About 50 Shia Muslims were aboard the Quetta-bound bus from Iran. They were returning from a pilgrimage. The vehicle was destroyed.

Authorities said about 50 kg of explosives were used for the blast.

New PM calls for projection of soft image of Pak

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Thursday called for the projection of the soft image of Pakistan through public diplomacy by encouraging people-to-people contacts, cultural exchanges and promotion of business and trade.

Ashraf, who assumed office last week after his predecessor Yousuf Raza Gilani was disqualified by the Supreme Court, made the remarks during a visit to the Foreign Ministry this afternoon.

He was given a briefing by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jillani and senior officials on the country’s foreign policy.
