RS Elections begins in Kerala

The elections for three Rajya Saha seats from Kerala began at 0900 hrs at the Assembly Conference Hall here today. Four candidates are contesting the elections, Prof PJ Kurian of Congress, Joy Abraham of Kerala Congress (M), CP Narayanan of CPI(M), and CN Chandran of CPI. However, the LDF has announced Narayanan as its first choice. As per the strengths in the Assembly, the Congress-led UDF could win two seats and the CPI(M)-led LDF one seat on the basis of single transferable vote system. The voting would end at 1600 hrs and counting start at 1700 hrs.

14 die in bus accident in UP

At least 14 people were killed and 14 others injured when a private bus dashed against a roadside tree under Didoli police station area of Jyoti-ba-Phule Nagar district here today. Police sources here said the ill-fated bus was going towards Bhimnagar from Haridwar when the driver lost control over his steering wheels.

Most of the deceased passengers died on the spot while rest on way to the hospital.

The injured have been rushed to the hospital at Moradabad.

CWC to bid farewell to Pranab today

Congress party’s highest decision making body-Congress Working Committee (CWC)- will meet on Monday to discuss the forthcoming Presidential polls.

As per reports, outgoing Finance Minister and veteran party leader Pranab Mukherjee will be given a farewell during the CWC meeting today. Pranab, who is the UPA candidate for the President’s post, is the longest serving members of the CWC.

The committee is also expected to pass a resolution acknowledging Pranab Mukherjee’s contribution and four decades of service to the party.

Digvijay asks Mamata to back Pranab

Digvijay Singh, who was recently snubbed by Congress for his remarks against Mamata Banerjee, on Sunday, asked the West Bengal Chief Minister to back UPA’s Presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee as there was no nominee of her choice in the fray.

“Since there is no candidate of Mamata’s choice, she should now openly support Pranab Mukherjee for the post of president as an ally in the UPA government,” Digvijay told reporters in Kota where he is currently on a personal visit.

YSRCP asks for inquiry to probe conspiracy against its chief

Reiterating that an inquiry should be ordered by a sitting Supreme Court judge to probe into the conspiracy to physically harm Party Chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, the YSR Congress has said some vested interests and a section of media has been actively involved in diverting the issue through malicious propaganda.

BJP dares Cong to name PM candidate

BJP on Sunday dared Congress to announce its Prime Ministerial candidate ahead of the next general elections.

To a query from a reporter here as to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s chances of becoming the BJP candidate for the PM’s post, the party’s general secretary Ananth Kumar said: “BJP has several persons who can become PM. What does Congress have? Congress has no names. It should first announce its candidate, BJP would announce its candidate at the time of the general elections.”

ACB arrets 2 VROs in bribe case

The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials arrested two Revenue Officers in bribe case at Karminagar and Medak districts respectively in the late hours of yesterday. A 51-yea-old M V Narasimha Rao , working as Village Revenue Officer at Chinnakodur mandal in Medak district, was caught red handed in late hours of yesterday when he demanded and accepted Rs 28,000 as bribe from the complainant for mutating the agricultural land, ACB said in a release here today. He was arrested after recovering tainted bribe amount from the accused.

Sahana Kumari qualifies for London Olympics

Karnataka high jumper Sahana Kumari became the 14th Indian athlete to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games when she cleared 1.92m to achieve this distinction on the first day of Senior National Athletic Championship in GMC. Balayogi Stadium here last evening. In that process she erased the previous national meet record of 1.91m held by Bobby Aloysius of Kerala since 2004. Vijayawada tense as Babu and Lagadapati plan dharnas

Vijayawada city turned tense as TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal planned dharnas against each other on Monday.

State JD (U) men stage dharna over farmers’ problems

Charging the Kiran Kumar Reddy government with neglecting problems of the farmers, the Janata Dal (United) State unit leaders and activists staged a dharna at Indira Park on Sunday.

The protestors demanded that the Congress government initiate immediate steps to lower the prices of fertilizers and implement the recommendations of the Dr Swaminathan Commission. They also demanded that the government pay loans to the tenant farmers directly.

26/11 accused held at IGI Airport

Key Mumbai terror attack suspect and Indian Mujahideen terrorist Abu Hamza was today arrested from the IGI Airport here.

Hamza alias Sayeed Zabi ud Deen alias Zabi Ansari alias Riyasat Ali was one of the Pakistani handlers who was giving instructions to the 26/11 terrorists, according to Delhi Police sources.

They said Hamza was in Pakistan when the 26/11 attack took place.

He was also wanted in connection with some cases in Gujarat, they said.

Congress meeting turns battle field in Warangal

A Congress workers’ meeting called for reviewing Parakala bye-election result turned into a battlefield.

The meeting was held on Sunday at Warangal DCC Office. Tension prevailed when Government Chief Whip Gandra Venkataramana Reddy’s followers and their critics came face to face and clashed. Earlier, Gandra’s followers launched a protest in the meeting hall. The fight occurred in the presence of ministers Ponnala Laxmaiah and Basavaraju Saraiah.

Ponguleti urges all parties to back Mukherjee for presidency

AICC secretary and MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy today appealed to all political parties to announce their support for Pranab Mukherjee, who was in fray for President post.

Speaking to the media at the CLP office here on Sunday, Ponguleti said that all political parties except a couple of them were in a dilemma on extending support to Pranab. He said that Pranab was an extraordinary person and intellectual, who is fully aware of the Constitution. (NSS)

Good response to Passport Adalat on second day: RPO

‘Passport Adalat’ was held for second day on Sunday at the Regional Passport Office at Secunderabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Regional Passport officer Srikar Reddy said that response was poor on the first day as people did not know about the ‘Passport Adalat’; but the response was good on the second day. The RPO received some 2,000 applications. Several applicants said that they were happy with the ‘Passport Adalat’ as it proved to be useful. (NSS)

Senior Congress MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao has said that the condition of the party in the State was far from satisfactory.

ED officials quizzing OMC accused in jail

Authorities of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday visited the Chanchalguda jail to question the accused in the OMC, Emaar Properties and Jagan assets’ cases.

It may be mentioned here that the CBI Special Judge’s Court granted permission to the ED to interrogate the accused in the jail.

It is learnt that the ED authorities, who were given only 15 days for interrogation, have started questioning B V Srinivasa Reddy of the OMC and former IAS officer Srilakshmi and former Mining Department director Raja Gopal on Sunday. The interrogation continued till 5 pm.

Two held for abducting boy

Two miscreants, who allegedly abducted a 12-year old boy in Karmanghat area here, were given a sound thrashing by local residents before handing him over to the police.

According to the information, three unidentified persons kidnapped Srikant while he was playing before his house and confined him in a room.

When the trio was moving under suspicious circumstances, the local residents felt something wrong and caught the miscreants and questioned about their behaviour.

Two injured as container hits RTC bus in Hitec city

Two persons were grievously injured when a speeding container dashed against an RTC bus in the hitec city at Wipro Circle at Gachibowli here on Sunday morning. The impact of collision was so severe that the bus turned into a ball of iron.

The RTC bus belonging to Barkhatpura Bus depot was proceeding towards Koti. Only six persons, including driver and conductor, were in the ill-fated bus. The injured were rushed to nearest hospital immediately.

Sabita to cooperate with CBI in Jagan’s case

Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy today made it clear that she would cooperate with the CBI investigating officers in the Jagan disproportionate assets case.

Speaking to the media here, the Home Minister reminded that the CBI had already given her a clean chit in the OMC case. She said that she would cooperate with the CBI sleuths in the Jagan assets case.
