Never claimed to be the Congress spokesman: Digvijay Singh

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, who was recently snubbed by the party for his remarks against Mamata Banerjee, today said he never claimed to be the party spokesperson and statements given by him so far were his “personal” views.

“I never claimed to be a spokesman of the party (Congress) and whatever statements I used to give on various issues were based on my personal opinion,” he told reporters.

Singh said he was not attending the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Delhi today due to prior engagements and had informed the party high-command in this regard.

Two Iranians sentenced to death over booze

A court in the Iranian province of Khorasan has sentenced two local men to death after they were caught drinking alcohol for the third time, according to Eurasiareview.com.

The men’s names were not released. It remained unclear whether they could still appeal the sentence, which a local judge said was “in process,” said the report citing Iran’s local ISNA news agency.

Alcohol consumption is banned in Iran in line with Islamic law, but is nevertheless reported to be on the rise due to a thriving black market, the report said.

Mrs. Zulekha Khan wife of Liyaqatullah Khan expired on 25th June 2012 at Medwin Hospital after long illness. She was working as the Head Mistress of Salamah (Al-Siddiq) High School, Bahadurpura. Sensex rises 17 points; oil, gas, power stocks up

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading flat in the afternoon session Tuesday led by weak Asian stock performances.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,873.09 points, was trading at 16,899.89 points around 12:15 p.m., up 0.11 percent or 17.73 points from its previous close at 16,882.16 points.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was trading 0.08 percent higher at 5,118.95 points.

Minister Suresh Kumar withdraws resignation

Karnataka Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar on Tuesday decided to withdraw his resignation after the advocate-general exonerated him of the charge that he had violated rules in securing allotment of a residential site.

“The advocate-general in his legal opinion has after reviewing the documents clearly said I have not done anything illegal; I have not given any false information to obtain the residential site”, he told reporters in Bangalore.

Civil Services training test by Hajj Committee

According to the statement made by the CEO of Central Hajj Committee Dr. Syed Shakir Husain an entrance test was conducted by it on 24th June, which was attended by 301 candidates. After the evaluation of the answer scripts of the students, it will be known as to how many of them qualified for admission into Civil Services coaching programme. The test was conducted at five places. According to CEO, the selected candidates will be provided free accommodation and free coaching for the said exam.

Sandberg first woman to be named to Facebook Board

Facebook has named its Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg as a member of its Board of Directors, making her the first woman director in the eight-year-old social network company.

Facebook announced Harvard alumna Sandberg’s promotion to the eight-member board yesterday.

42-year-old Sandberg joined the social network in 2008 and oversees Facebook’s business operations including sales, marketing, business development, legal, human resources, public policy and communications.

Virbhadra Singh resigns from cabinet

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Virbhadra Singh resigned Tuesday after a court in Shimla framed corruption charges against him and his wife.

“I have submitted my resignation to the prime minister,” the veteran Congress leader told IANS after calling on Manmohan Singh at his official residence here.

The prime minister has accepted the resignation, officials said.

Virbhandra Singh said he would return to Himachal Pradesh, his home state, “to strengthen my party ahead of the forthcoming (assembly) elections.

Indo-Pak Foreign Minister-level talks postponed

The Indo-Pak Foreign Ministers’ meeting, which was scheduled in July, has been postponed since the dates were clashing with the Presidential poll here.

According to official sources, Pakistan wanted to hold the meeting on July 19 which was not convenient to the Indian side in view of the Presidential poll on that date.

The new dates are being worked out at the convenience of both sides and the meeting is likely to happen in August, the sources said.

PM chaired body on land reforms to meet

Government is preparing ground for the first meeting of National Council for Land Reforms (NLRC), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, that was constituted four years ago.

Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh will hold a “preparatory meeting” with six non-official members of NLRC and secretaries of concerned Ministries on June 26, a source said.

The meeting is being held to prepare the ground for the first meeting of the PM-chaired 16-member body, which includes nine Chief Ministers.

“I will put in my papers around 4.30pm. I will be leaving office around 4.30pm and after meeting Prime Minister, I will be leaving for home,” he told reporters outside his North Block office here.

Separatist-sponsored strike disrupts normal life in Kashmir

Life across Kashmir was disrupted today due to a strike called by separatists over gutting of the 200-year-old Dastageer Sahib shrine in Khanyar area of the city.

Schools, colleges, offices, shops and other commercial establishments were closed due to the strike called by almost all separatist groups including both factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKLF.

Popular Front dole out educational kits to students

As part of the national level educational campaign ‘School Chalo’ launched by Popular Front of India, school kits were distributed among students at Bandlaguda, Chandrayangutta. In the programme school kits were distributed among nearly 250 students, mainly comprising of poor and deserving children.

President Front, Mufti Abdus Subhan kicked off the programme and revealed that under the campaign such programmes are being organised on national level. The objective behind conducting these programmes is to promote education and create awareness among public.

A new study says that weight loss can help obese, middle-aged, pre-diabetic males boost low testosterone levels by almost 50 percent.

“Doctors should first encourage overweight men with low testosterone levels to try to lose weight through diet and exercise before resorting to testosterone therapy to raise their hormone levels,” said study co-author Frances Hayes, professor at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin.
