Pakistan media plays down Hamza arrest

In complete contrast to the Indian media, the Pakistani media Tuesday appeared to play down the dramatic arrest of a key mastermind of the Mumbai terror attack.

Most newspapers carried New Delhi-datelined stories by AFP on Sayyad Zabiuddin alias Abu Jindal Hamza, an Indian who was deported to India from Saudi Arabia despite carrying a Pakistani passport.

A Geo TV report quoted the Indian media as saying that the Special Cell of Delhi Police had made the arrest at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here.

An increasing number of women across India are keen to tie the knot before they turn 25, and states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat top the chart, a survey released here Tuesday has showed.

Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday resigned as the finance minister to contest the July 19 presidential election as the candidate of the ruling United Progressive Alliance.

“I am leaving behind my life as a political activist spanning over four decades,” Mukherjee told reporters after submitting his resignation.

Minister Fauzia Khan denies links with Abu Jundal, says ready to face inquiry

Maharashtra’s minister of state for education Fauzia Khan on Tuesday denied any links with arrested 26/11 terrorist Abu Jundal alias Zabiuddin Ansari.

Khan’s denial came after allegations that Jundal, an Indian mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, allegedly spent a day in a room belonging to Khan at the old legislators’ hostel near Mantralaya in 2009. Khan was then a member of legislative council.

“Many people stay at my government accommodation and it is not possible for me to be aware of the credentials of every one of them,” said Khan while reacting to the allegation.

Will submit my resignation around 4.30 pm: Pranab

Pranab Mukherjee, who has been selected as the UPA’s Presidential nominee, will resign late Tuesday afternoon as the Union Finance Minister.

“I will put in my papers around 4.30 (pm). I will be leaving office around 4.30 (pm) and after meeting PM, I will be leaving for home,” he told reporters outside his North Block office here.

Besides, 15 PML-Q lawmakers have been included in new Premier Raja Pervez Ashraf’s Council of Ministers taking its strength to 53.

66-year-old Elahi, who already holds the defence production and industries portfolios, has been appointed the Deputy Prime Minister with immediate effect and until further orders, a notification issued by the Cabinet Division said on Monday night.

Deshmukh appears before Adarsh panel

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday appeared before the two-member inquiry commission set up by the state government to probe into the Adarsh scam.

A day earlier, Union Minister of Power Sushil Kumar Shinde deposed before the panel and informed it that the decision to allot government land and grant of additional FSI to the housing society was taken during the tenure of Vilasrao Deshmukh as Chief Minister.

Coca Cola to to invest $5 billion in India by 2020

Coca Cola, the world’s largest beverage firm, plans to invest $5 billion in India over the next eight years on expanding its bottling and other business capacities, company chairman and chief executive officer Muhtar Kent said Tuesday.

“We plan to invest $5 billion in Indian business between now and 2020. This represents an increase of $3 billion beyond what we had previously committed to investing in this market,” Kent said at a media interaction here.

He said the company was “very bullish” on India and would invest heavily across the value chain to expand business.

Mir Chowk police arrested a cable TV channel operator of old city on the charges of telecasting blasphemous film. According to inspector Mir Chowk Mr. S Venkat Reddy, police yesterday evening arrested news editor of cable TV channel Syed Ismail, on the charges of hurting religious sentiments.

It must be noted that day before yesterday, the public had staged protest in front of the channel office and has caused damages to the office, in protest against telecasting film, based on two Prophets.

Water board denies water shortage

Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board today said that water is being supplied normally in the twin cites and to meet the requirement of citizens in areas of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation 340 to 345 million gallon is being supplied on daily basis.

Refuting the report from a section of media, regarding water shortage, water board officials told that a total of 340.34 MGD water is being supplied in the twin cities from Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar, Manjeera, Phase I II III & IV and Krishna Phase I & II.

They claimed that there is no shortage of water.

Restrictions imposed in Srinagar following tension

Undeclared curfew-like restrictions were imposed in the old city areas of Srinagar Tuesday following tension in the city over the gutting of the revered shrine of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani in the Khanyar area.
