Amid expectations of a Cabinet reshuffle, external affairs minister S M Krishna on Wednesday strongly pitched for Rahul Gandhi’s entry into the government, saying it was “necessary” to help in solving the problems faced by the country.

Krishna noted that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had already asked Rahul Gandhi to join the government and his “invitation” stands.

He is the quintessential comic actor of Hindi films but now Riteish Deshmukh, whose sequel to “Masti” will soon go on the floors, says he plans to stop doing sequels and try to be part of drama and crime thrillers.

“My next film will be ‘Masti 2’. I will start shooting in the first week of August,” Riteish told IANS. He will team up with the original cast – Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani in part two.

“It is myself, Aftab and Vivek in the film. It’s my fourth film with Indra Kumar I feel like I am married to him,” Riteish, 33, said.

Odisha gang rape: Doctors protest action

Doctors in Odisha Tuesday protested police action against three medics for allegedly not taking care of a gangrape victim who died after more than six months of treatment at a hospital.

The Odisha Medical Services Association, an organisation of over 4,000 doctors, said the crime branch of the state police has filed charge sheet against the doctors, alleging that they violated the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocity) Act.

Bihar to bring IT to madrassas

The Bihar government plans soon to bring information technology (IT) to the state’s madrassas for modern education, Minority Welfare Minister Shahid Ali Khan has said.

“It’ll help madrassa students to learn about the benefits of IT in day-to-day life,” Khan said.

He said the government would spend Rs.28 crore on the project.

Though the union government began the process of modernising madrassas in 1994, the state government introduced the process in Bihar in 2002.

Infant dies by snake bite

(Siasat News): a one and half year old girl died when a snake in Pragi bit her. According to police that infant Pooja was the daughter of Srinivas who is a farmer.

Yesterday, when Pooja was playing near her house, a snake bit her. She was immediately shifted to Niloufer Hospital where she died during the treatment.

Police has registered a case.

Dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, facing trial for their alleged roles in the twin murders of their daughter Aarushi and domestic aide Hemraj, were today ordered by a special court here to be given over 200 photographs of the crime scene, besides the records of the fingerprints lifted from there.

Special Judge S Lal asked the CBI to hand over to Talwars the documents, demanded by them to defend themselves in the case.

IIM to award management degrees to students: Sibal

New Delhi, June 27: Keeping in view the difficulties faced by IIM passouts in pursuing further education in foreign countries due to the management diplomas awarded to them, IIMs would soon be awarding degrees to its students.

“IIMs will be awarding degrees to IIM students in place of diploma. The attempt will increase their acceptability all over the world”, Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after a meeting of IIM directors at IIM Lucknow.

AC, first class rail fares may rise from July

Railway passenger fares in all AC classes and first class may rise by 3.6 per cent from July 1 as there are little indications that Finance Ministry would extend service tax exemption to Railways beyond this month.

Highly placed sources in the Ministry conceded that the fare hike looks imminent as Railways could ill-afford to absorb the additional burden of Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000 crore given its financial condition.

Five Al Qaeda terrorists escape from Yemen jail

At least five terrorists of the Al Qaeda have escaped from a prison in Yemen, the country’s official news agency Saba reported.

The five members of the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) fled Tuesday from a prison in the country’s northwestern port city of al-Hodayda, Xinhua quoted an official as saying.

Several members of the Yemeni Al Qaeda wing were recently captured following a US-backed operation in the southern Abyan province.

Syria’s neighbours, including Iran, should be involved in the settlement of the conflict that has disturbed the country for over a year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“I believe that the more Syrian neighbours are involved in the resolution process, the better,” Putin told reporters in Jordan.

He said each neighbour has a certain influence on the forces inside the country.

Russian postal service among world’s worst: Study

The Russian Post is among the world’s worst postal services, outperformed even by counterparts in countries like Angola, Honduras and Mongolia, says a new study.

The study, titled “Letter Grading Government Efficiency”, saw its authors send two letters with wrong addresses and requests to “return to sender if undeliverable” to five biggest cities in 159 countries that have signed various international postal conventions, the Slon.ru website reported Tuesday.

The authors allowed more than 400 days for the letters to return.

Free Sarabjit, Krishna ‘requests’ Pakistan

India Wednesday welcomed the release of Surjeet Singh from a Pakistani jail and renewed its “request” to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to also free Sarabjit Singh and all Indian prisoners who had completed their sentences.

“I have seen media reports about release from imprisonment in Pakistan, of Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. I welcome this decision and further renew our request to the president of Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh who has been in custody for well over two decades and is serving a death sentence,” said External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna.

Abu Jindal’s arrest exposes Pakistani role: US expert

Noting that India’s arrest of terror suspect Abu Jindal has exposed Pakistan’s role in the 26/11 Mumbai attack, a US expert has asked Islamabad to take action against all those involved, including serving intelligence officials.

Jindal’s alleged confession that “Pakistani intelligence officials were present in the control room from which he directed the attackers is explosive,” wrote Lisa Curtis, senior research fellow for South Asia at the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation Tuesday.

India asks Pak to release Sarabjit Singh

India today requested Pakistan to release death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh after Islamabad in a midnight twist said it had taken steps for the release of another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh who has been jailed for three decades.

Hours after reports emerged yesterday that Pakistan was to free Sarabjit Singh, the presidential spokesman last night clarified that authorities were working on the release of Surjeet Singh.
