UAE to provide $136mn food aid for Yemen

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will provide food aid worth 500 million dirhams (about $136 million) to the Yemeni people.

This follows President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s order Sunday in line with UAE’s brotherly feelings towards the Yemeni people and out of his keenness to alleviate their sufferings.

President Sheikh Khalifa has assigned the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Humanitarian Foundation to buy the food items from the local markets in Yemen to stimulate that country’s economy and revive the local markets.

CBI questions Jagan in illegal wealth case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned jailed YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in the illegal wealth case Sunday, the first day of the five-day custody.

The questioning was on at the officer’s mess in the office of director general of prisons, adjoining Chanchalguda Central Jail, where Jagan is lodged since May 28.

The Kadapa MP, emerged from the jail gate around 10.30 a.m. With his trademark smile, he greeted mediapersons with folded hands before the CBI officials led him into the waiting vehicle. Clad in white shirt, he was clean shaven and looked fresh.

Security increased for CBI joint director

In view of the fast-changing developments in the high-profile YSR Congress chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy assets case, the Cyberabad police on Saturday stepped up security at the residence of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) joint director VV Lakshminarayana.

The Cyberabad police said that though there was no change in the personal security enjoyed by Lakshminarayana and CBI superintendent of police H Venkatesh, the security cover at CBI quarters, Madhapur, where the two officers stay, was beefed up by posting more personnel.

Corruption ruling the roost in Noida: MLA

Alleging that farmers fell prey to the “nexus” between officials and politicians, local BJP MLA Mahesh Sharma today said efforts should be made to solve the abadi land issues and farmers should be given the developed land.

Curfew relaxed for two-hour in Kosi Kalan town

Curfew was relaxed today for two hours in riot-hit Kosi Kalan town, where communal violence claimed four lives, as there was no untoward incident since Friday.

“No untoward incident has been reported since Friday mid- night. Further relaxation in curfew would be considered if the situation further improves,” District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar said.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced a relief of Rs five lakh to next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured.

Doctor held for carrying out abortion of minor girl

A local doctor was arrested for allegedly aborting a six-month-old female foetus of an unmarried minor girl here, police said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, two women have also been arrested in connection with the recovery of two female foetuses in Barshinaka area here on Saturday.

Police said they arrested Dr Shivaji Sanap, who ran a private maternity clinic on Jalna road here, for allegedly conducting the abortion of a 17-year-old unmarried girl here recently.

Pooja Bhatt to dub for Sunny Leone in ‘Jism 2’

Besides directing Jism 2, actress-turned-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt is all set to lend her voice to lead star Sunny Leone’s character in the film.

Jism 2 marks the Bollywood debut of the Indo-Canadian pornographic actress and Pooja says she is dubbing for Sunny’s role on the insistence of her father Mahesh Bhatt, who has scripted the film.

“My father and unit insists on not using a ‘dubbing artist’ with a generic voice but something distinct,” said the said the 40-year-old.

Accepting the plea of a medical student, who was not allowed to sit for his second year BDS examination, the Delhi High Court has directed the Jamia Milia Islamia to allow him to appear in the examination which commenced from June one.

The court, however, directed the university not to declare the result of Mohamed Asadullah till the final disposal of his petition in the court.

Plane with 153 people crashes into building in Nigeria

At least 153 people are feared to have died when a passenger plane carrying them crashed into a building in a residential area of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos today.

The aircraft belonging to Dana air caught fire immediately sending billows of thick black smoke into the air at the Iju neighbourhood where it went down.

Civil Aviation Authority officials believed there were little chances of finding any survivors.

An eyewitness told PTI he does not believe any of the passengers survived the crash that happened near a bus stop in the Ifako Local Government Area of Lagos state.

Dhoni wants to serve army after his cricketing career ends

n his maiden visit to the Kashmir Valley, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sunday visited the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district where he interacted with soldiers and local youth. He also expressed his desire to serve the force after his playing days are over.

Dhoni is an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army.

Mubarak verdict to be appealed against

Egypt’s prosecutor general will appeal against the verdicts delivered by a Cairo court in the trial of ex-president Hosni Mubarak, his two sons, the former interior minister and his six aides, state TV reported Sunday.

The report, however, did not clearly state which verdict the prosecutor general will appeal against, Xinhua reported.

On Saturday, the presiding judge Ahmed Refaat announced Mubarak and former interior minister Habib Adli had been sentenced to life terms for their role in the killing of protesters during the uprising against Mubarak’s rule.

Ramdev snubs Kejriwal disapproving his comments against PM

Virtually snubbing Arvind Kejriwal, yoga guru Ramdev today disapproved of the Team Anna member’s comments against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other politicians during his fast along with Anna Hazare saying he was against personal criticism.

Soon after Kejriwal, who was on fast along with Anna Hazare and the yoga guru, finished his speech, Ramdev took the microphone and said “today, we thought that we will not take any body’s name. But Arvind took the names”.

Explosives recovered in Assam

A huge quantity of explosives and bomb making material were recovered from two houses in Tinsukia district of upper Assam.

The police and army launched a joint operation and seized the explosives and bomb making material from the
two houses at Majgaon in Tinsukai district today, the police said.

Owners of both the houses were taken into custody, the police added.

Hazare makes strong pitch for right to reject

Stepping up his anti-graft offensive, Anna Hazare today made a strong pitch for ‘right to reject’ and said people with criminal cases pending against them should be kept out of Parliament using the clause.

“Arvind (Kejriwal) has just said people with cases against them are sitting in Parliament…to stop this, we must
use right to reject,” Hazare said addressing the gathering at Jantar Mantar during the joint one-day fast with yoga guru Ramdev.

When a voter feels that none of the candidates contesting is good, he should use the right to reject, he said.

In an episode similar to the Chand-Fiza love saga, a Congress MLA has sparked controversy by entering into a second marriage after converting to Islam without divorcing her first husband.

Dr Rumi Nath, 33, surfaced in the state capital yesterday after a month’s absence and admitted that she had married the second time without divorcing her husband and has now changed her name to Rabia Sultana.

An umbrella body of advocates in Assam’s Barak Valley has denounced her marriage terming it as “illegal” and

Assad: Syria massacre carried out by ‘monsters’

Syrian President Bashar Assad today denied that his government had anything to do with last week’s gruesome Houla massacre, saying not even “monsters” would carry out such an ugly crime.

In a televised speech to parliament, Assad said his country is facing a “real war” and blamed foreign-backed
terrorists and extremists for the bloodshed. He pledged to press ahead with his military crackdown.

Naquee Ahmed, one of the jailed 13/7 blasts accused, who had claimed to be an informer of Delhi police, was in contact with Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) elusive chief operative Yasin Bhatkal through a popular social networking site since 2008, Maharashtra ATS claimed today.

Naquee, who hails from Darbhanga district of Bihar, was initially arrested on January 10 this year on charges of
forgery for allegedly procuring mobile phone SIM cards using fake documents.

Unhappy with American plans to shift a bulk of its naval fleet to Asia Pacific by 2020, China today warned the US to refrain from muddying the waters in South China Sea, saying the move will raise tensions in the region.

While there was no official reaction from Beijing yet to US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta’s announcement at Singapore yesterday about increasing American presence in Asia Pacific, a commentary by China’s official news agency Xinhua said the move will increase tensions in the region.

Jagan deserves no mercy, says Azad

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy deserves no mercy as he indulged in corruption.

Addressing an by-elections meeting at Municipal Grounds here, Azad said that the on-going CBI probe against Jaganmohan Reddy was initiated by the judiciary and therefore, it was wrong to blame the Congress party or the government for the same. “We have great respect for the departed soul (YSR) and Mrs YSR (Vijayamma). But their son does not deserve any mercy,” Azad said.
