Kerala engineer dies in Nigerian air crash

Rijo Eldos, a young computer engineer hailing from Neriamangalam in Idukki district of Kerala, was one of the 153 victims who was on the Nigerian airplane that crashed Sunday in the densely populated city of Lagos.

According to his family here, Eldos was travelling from Abuja to Lagos to take part in a company meeting. He was working with Reddington Nigeria.

The family is hoping that they will be able to get his body back soon. Eldos was supposed to come home for vacation in under two months, according to family sources.

Woman commits suicide at Delhi metro station

A 31-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping on the track at the Tilak Nagar Metro station here Monday, officials said.

“The incident took place around 9.58 a.m. when a woman jumped on the train track. The train was coming from Dwarka,” said an official from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The Hari Nagar resident from west Delhi was rushed to the nearest Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital, the official added.

There were four suicide cases reported last month month at various Delhi Metro stations.

Thackeray slams Pawar for criticising Congress

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Monday slammed Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for his recent criticism of the Maharashtra government.

Pawar had last week targeted the state Congress Party for what he termed as the collapse of the government’s “decision-making process”.

Israeli military admits to cyber-warfare

The Israeli military is using cyber-warfare to curb attacks on the country’s cyber space and to counter enemies on the net, the authorities say.

In a statement released on the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) website Sunday, the Israeli military admitted that this kind of war is seen in the same light as the other battlefields, and has been used in intelligence operations, Xinhua reported.

CBI questioning Jagan for second day

For the second consecutive day Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned jailed YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy for alleged corruption.

The CBI, given the MP’s custody for five days, took him from Chanchalguda Central Jail to its office at Koti, three kilometers away. The questioning took place in the presence of Jagan’s lawyers.

Jagan was questioned for over six hours Sunday at the office of the Director General of Prisons near the jail.

Shahi Imam lashes out at Uttar Pradesh government

Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, has come down heavily on the Samajwadi Party (SP) government in Uttar Pradesh for its “inability to ensure the safety of Muslims” during the communal riots at Mathura.

Prevented from going to the violence-hit area, the Imam was talking to mediapersons at the circuit house in Agra Sunday.

Targeting the SP, for whom he had sought support in the state assembly elections, Bukhari rued the fact that not a single statement had been issued by the government on the rioting.

Aarushi case: Hearing adjourned till June 8

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ghaziabad Monday adjourned the hearing in the Aarushi-Hemaraj double murder case till June 8.

The hearing was adjourned after the Bar Association of Ghaziabad decided to strike work following the death of a lawyer.

Aarushi’s parents, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, are being tried for the 2008 murders.

Bilawal says he can defuse US-Pakistan tension

Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that he can help defuse the tension between Pakistan and the US.

Bilawal said he can bridge the gap between Pakistan and the West and help defuse the current Islamabad-Washington tension, Associated Press of Pakistan reported, citing an interview with Newsweek.

Bilawal echoed Pakistan’s position on the various irritants that have strained relations between the US and Pakistan.

Four women killed for dancing at Pakistani wedding

Four women, who were sentenced to death by clerics in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for singing and dancing at a wedding, have been killed, a media report said. A minister, however, denied this.

Four women and two men had been sentenced to death in Kohistan for singing and dancing at a wedding.

Muhamamd Afzal, brother of one of the convicted men, said that four women have been done to death, Geo News reported.

Clerics ordered their killing following a mobile phone video that showed the six singing and dancing at a remote village in the mountainous district of Kohistan.

Dimple Yadav to launch second political innings Tuesday

Dimple Yadav, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, will file her nomination for the Kannauj Lok Sabha by-poll Tuesday, a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader said.

The by-poll was necessiated by Akhilesh Yadav’s election to the state legislative Council and Dimple was fielded following consultations and deliberations, the leader said.

This is the second innings of Dimple Yadav, the first being when she was fielded by the SP from Firozabad, a party bastion, in 2009.

Gay parade held in Mexico

Thousands of people and about 30 floats took part in Mexico’s 34th Gay Pride Parade in the capital, where a concert marked the end of the event.

The parade started at the Angel of Independence Monument and wound its way through Mexico City’s streets Saturday.

The Tourism Secretariat estimated that at least 10,000 people attended the event, while the Federal District’s Public Safety Secretariat released a preliminary estimate of more than 30,000 paradegoers.

The theme of this year’s parade was “¡Educacion formal de la sexualidad ya!” (Formal Teaching of Sexuality, Now!).
