14 gamblers arrested

(Siasat News): Musheerabad police has raided a house at Bholakpur and arrested 14 persons involved in gambling.

Additional inspector Musheerabd Mr. Mohd. Riyazuddin said that as soon as he got the information, he immediately conducted a raid on a residential premises and arrested 14 persons present there and seized Rs. 43000 cash from their possession.

Later, they were produced in the court and handed over to judicial custody.

Krishna leaves for SCO summit

With India increasingly looking to Central Asia for its energy security needs, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna left Tuesday for Beijing, where he will pitch for a bigger role for New Delhi in the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Krishna will also hold bilateral talks Wednesday with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi during which they are expected to review the progress of some of key initiatives like firming up the contours of a maritime dialogue.

Zardari wants a greener Pakistan

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has called for concerted efforts to turn the country green by planting the maximum number of saplings.

He also wants active engagement with international community to address environmental issues, Asssociated Press of Pakistan reported Tuesday.

In a message to the nation on the World Environment Day, Zardari said greenery and forests were critical for addressing environmental problems.

HC advocate petitions NHRC against CBI in Jagan’s case

An advocate of Andhra Pradesh High Court has petitioned National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for violating all constitutional rights and also discretionary power conferred by CrPC by arresting YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in the disproportionate assets case against him, here on May 27.

I was always confident of defending 123: Mohammad Hafeez

After an easy 23-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second and final T20 international and levelling the series 1-1, Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez said he was always confident his bowlers would be able to defend any target on a Hambantota pitch. Pakistan had managed only 122 after winning the toss but squared the two-match series by keeping the hosts to 99 here yesterday.

‘I don’t think the toss had decided the game. The innings Shahid Afridi played was the difference,’ Hafeez said after his first victory as captain.

Rehman Malik suspended from Pak Senate

In a jolt to Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik, the country’s Supreme Court today suspended him from the membership of Parliament on the ground that he had failed to provide proof of renouncing his British citizenship.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry issued the interim order while hearing a petition challenging the dual nationality of several members of the two Houses of Parliament.

Special Lok Adalat Bench for senior citizens in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority on Monday constituted a Lok Adalat Bench exclusively for settlement of cases pertaining to senior citizens.

District and Sessions Judge and Member Secretary of the Authority S Ravi Kumar said the Lok Adalat Bench formed under Section 19 of Legal Services Authorities Act would consist of Justice B Subhashan Reddy, Chief Justice (retired) as Presiding Judge and retired High Court Judges including Justice SV Maruthi and Justice Motilal B Naik as members.

Colombian rebels kill three

Colombian rebels have ambushed a police convoy and killed at least three people, authorities said.

They were attacked Monday by the guerrillas of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) when they were taking a pregnant woman to a hospital, Xinhua reported.

Three others were injured in the attack in southern Caqueta department.

Minor girl gangraped, set ablaze

A minor girl was today allegedly gangraped by four youths and later set ablaze by them when she told her family about the incident, police said.

The 15-year-old went to a nearby forest in Khajda Harchand village when she was overpowered by the accused, who took turns to rape her.

The victim somehow reached her house and narrated the crime to her family, who rushed to the forest in search of the youths.

When the accused came to know that she had informed her parents about the incident, they reached the girl’s house and set her on fire by pouring kerosene.

Heat wave kills 16 in WB

The blistering heat sweeping West Bengal claimed five more lives on Monday taking the death toll to 16 in the state during the past three days with the average temperature hovering at 45 degrees Celsius.

While nine died in Burdwan district, three each in Kolkata and Purulia and one in West Midnapore districts.

In Burdwan district, five died in different places of Asansole sub-division, its Sub-Divisional Officer Surojit Dutta Sharma said. Four others died in Durgapur, hospital sources said.

Monsoon set to arrive in next 48 hours: IMD

Conditions are favourable for the onset of the South West monsoon over Kerala in the next 48 hours, according to the IMD station in Thiruvananthapuram.

Rain occurred at a few places in Kerala and Isolated places in lakshadweep. The chief amounts of rainfall reported in cm are: Enamakkal, Vadakara 3 cm each; Kottayam, Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda 2 cm each; Kochi, Piravom, Kodungallur 1 cm each.

Maximum temperature was above normal in Kozhikode and Piravom district. It was also above normal in Ernakulam, Kannur, Kollam, Kottayam district and changed little in the remaining district.

VH raps Vijayamma’s tirade

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao has lashed out at YSRCP honorary president Y S Vijayamma for criticizing the Congress party.

Speaking to the media here on Monday, VH said that thinking of Vijayamma was not good as she was stating that they would fight in the people’s court in spite of engaging legal luminaries and spending crores of rupees for arguments on behalf of YSRCP Chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. He asked Vijayamma as to why she was spending crores of rupees on engaging costly lawyers when she wanted to fight it out in the people’s court.

22 sunstroke deaths reported in AP’s Krishna district ‎

Intense heat wave has taken a heavy toll in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, where 22 people have died due to sunstroke since late last month, officials said on Monday. Most of the victims were agricultural labourers.

Twenty-two people have succumbed to sunstroke in various Mandals of the district between May 24 and June 1, Collector S A M Rizvee said, quoting reports reaching the district headquarter here, about 350km from Hyderabad.

National interests to determine ties with US:Gilani

Pakistan’s relations with the US are “multi-dimensional and important” but the ties will be determined on the basis of Islamabad’s national interests, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Monday against the backdrop of growing strains between the two countries.

“We are trying to have an open, transparent, and mutually beneficial relationship with the US based on our national interests,” he said.

Mubarak refuses food, medicine in prison

Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has declined food and medicine since being taken to a prison after a court sentenced him to life behind bars for his role in the death of protestors last year.

In Cairo’s Tora prison, Mubarak’s mood has been bad “to the point of not even responding to those who greet him”, said the el-Fagr newspaper.

Ever since the trial began in August, the 84-year-old Mubarak was detained in the International Medical Center, a facility run by the military near Cairo.

Anna casts doubt on PM over coal scam ‎

Rejecting Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s defence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Anna Hazare on Monday said suspected whether Singh is clean after going through CAG report on coal allocation and the file prepared by his team.

“I have seen the papers, I have suspicion, I have doubts. I had always thought that he was a clean Prime Minister but after reading the files… There is something wrong,” Hazare told reporters.

US Defence Secretary Panetta in India today

The situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan and strengthening of military cooperation between India and the US are expected to come up in the discussions with American Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, who arrives here today for a two-day visit, will have with Indian leaders.

During the delegation-level discussions between Defence Minister AK Antony and Mr Panetta on June 6, China is also expected to figure in talks between the two sides, officials said in Delhi on Monday.

Dimple Yadav to file nomination from Kannauj

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav to file nomination today from Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency which goes for a by poll on June 24.

The notification for the bypoll would be issued on May 30. The last date for filing nominations is June 06 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations has been fixed on June 09.

The Kannauj seat fell vacant after its three-time member of Parliament Akhilesh Yadav was elected as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, forcing a bypoll.

Complaint against Prashant Bhushan over Kashmir remarks

A complaint was on Monday filed in a Delhi court against key Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan for his comments on Kashmir.

The complaint has been filed by Vibhor Anand, a law student, seeking directions to the police for registration of FIR against Prashant Bhushan for his alleged remarks on status of Kashmir and withdrawal of Army from the region.

The complainant said Bhushan made the comments with “a malafide intention and sole motive to create panic among the masses and to disturb the Constitutional set up.”
