SI arrested for taking bribe

Haryana State Vigilance Bureau has caught Sub-Inspector Mahinder Singh of Hansi police station in Hisar district, red handed for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.

Singh was accepting bribe from one Manphool Singh, a resident of Mill Gate, Hisar, in lieu of giving relief to his nephew Manjit alias Kaka in a case. A spokesman for the Bureau today said a case has been registered against the accused under sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. UNI

Botcha hits out at Jagan

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Chief Botcha Satyanarayana today said YSR Congress Party President Y S Jaganmohan Reddy would have faced CBI inquiry even if he had remained in the Congress, in the disproporionate assets case. Speaking to mediapersons here, he said a Chief Minister was also not above law and should could be punished if he commits mistakes. He said in Congress’s view ‘Justice is Justice’ and the guilty will have to face punishment.

APCOST made arrangement to safe viewing of Venus Transit tomorrow

Department of Science & Technology, Government of India and Andhra Pradesh State Council of Science & Technology (APCOST) has made all necessary arrangements, through out the state, for safe viewing of the fabulous event of Venus Transit tomorrow. Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments, an official release said here today. Indeed, only seven such events occurred since the invention of the telescope and till the beginning of the 21st century (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and 2004).

CEO reviews poll arrangements with Collectors, SPs

Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal today said he had reviewed the poll arrangements, deployment of police force, execution of non-bailable warrants and enforcement of model code with collectors and superintendents of police of the 12 districts where the by-poll would be held on June 12 through video conference. Informing this at a press conference here, he said necessary instructions have also been given to take up the videography of the poll process and appointment of Micro Observers in all the polling stations.

South West Monsoon advances

The South West Monsoon has advanced and covered the entire Kerala state, some parts of Coastal Karnataka and South Tamil Nadu today. A bulletin from Cyclone Warning Centre Visakhapatnam said conditions are favourable for further advancement of South West Monsoon into remaining parts of Coastal Karnataka, Goa, and Parts of South Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra and some more parts of Tamil Nadu during the next 48 hours. CBI court rejects bail to Koneru Prasad

The Principal Special CBI Court rejected bail to Trimex Group Chief Founder and main accused in the APIIC-Emaar land scam case, Koneru Prasad here today. This was the fifth time that the court had rejected bail application of Mr Prasad. The Judge A Pullaiah, while declining to grant bail to Mr Prasad, said as the investigation is under progress to find out the final beneficiaries in the Emaar scam, it was not wise to give bail at this stage. Mr Prasad was arrested by the CBI on November 3, 2011 and was lodged in Chanchalguda Jail here.

BJP complains CEO on TV news, Newspaper

Bharatiya Janata Party today complained to Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bhanwar Lal against TV Channel T News and Namaste Telangana daily news paper for indulging in slander and defamatory writings against BJP every day in the name of articles, news reporting and columns. In a complaint to the ECO, copy of which was released to the media here, state General Secretary N Ramachander Rao said the Channel and news paper were giving an impression that the Parkala Assembly Constituency was only for TRS which had winning chances and the BJP did not have any chance.

4 women workers killed as mango shed caves in

Four women workers, including two minor girls, working in a mango processing unit, were killed and 13 others were injured, when the mango processing unit caved in at Chandrapatla village in Visannapet mandal of Krishna district today. Police said the mango unit, a thatched shed, caved in due to heavy winds accompanied by rain in the evening. Heavy wooden logs fell on the deceased while they were working.The deceased were identified as Kancharla Sujata (35) Kancharla Akhila (10) V Victoriyamma (30) and Vasam Sujata(12). The injured were shifted to GGH in Visannapet. UNI

Department of Posts Secretary Ms Manjula today said the Indian Postal Department has delivered Aadhar cards in a record time. Participating in the Dak Seva Awards function here, Mr Majula said the Department of Posts, in accordance with technological changes, has undertaken many initiatives like e-post and smart cards systems. Pak H Commissioner calls for resumption of cricket ties

Pakistan High Commissioner to India Shahid Malik today made a strong pitch for resumption of cricket ties with India. “This is the desire of the leaders of both the countries,” Mr Malik said in an interaction with Members of the India Women’s Press Corps. He pointed out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani discussed the matter when the latter visited Mohali to watch the India Pakistan World Cup Cricket Semi-final.

Honorarium to Imams not a populist move, says Mamata

Defending her decision to give honorarium to imams in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday said the move was guided by socio-economic conditions of the clergymen.

“The decision is not a populist measure but has been guided by the socio-economic conditions of the imams and the minority community,” she said at a cultural event here.

“The religious leaders are held in high esteem and their help can be taken to spread awareness on a number of social issues,” she said.

Strict action against 4 for attacking couple

5 women commit suicide in Pun 2 days

Five women have committed have suicide in Punjab in last two days.

These Four women had ended their lives due to harassment by their husbands. According to information received from Punjab police, Renu Bala of Machaki Mall Singh village committed suicide on June 3 due to alleged harassment by her husband and his family members. The Kotakpura police had registered a case against husband and other family members under sections 306 of the IPC.

I feel at times I am a Bengali, says Vidya Balan

Kahaani sensation Vidya Balan said she is happy that her love affair with Kolkata continues since she first starred in “Bhalo Theko”, her first Bengali film.
Half the reason she agreed to act in Kahaani was because the backdrop of the film was Kolkata, her “favourite city”, Vidya said.

“I was teling Sujoy (director Sujoy Ghosh) the other day that half the reason I did this movie was it had the backdrop of my favourite city and the characters looked so familiar,” Vidya said.

Sharman likes touchy, serious roles

Comic roles are okay, but people like serious roles which touches their hearts, actor Sharman Joshi today said here.

He was in the city to promote his upcoming film ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’, which is about father-son relationship.

“Comedy roles are okay but I like serious role which touches hearts of the people. People like such roles and I am comfortable in doing such roles with learning from theatre,” Joshi told reporters here.

Congress downplays Ramdev-Pawar meet

The Congress Tuesday downplayed yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s meeting with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ally and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar over the black money issue, saying there was nothing wrong in it.

“There is nothing wrong in it…Everybody is concerned about the black money issue,” Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi told NDTV channel.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh described it as a meeting between two businessmen.

“It was a meeting between two businessmen,” Singh told the same channel.

States NOT ready to join new IIT-JEE format

As the government moves ahead with its plan for a common engineering entrance test, a majority of states at a meeting of education ministers Tuesday refused to join the new IIT-JEE entrance format for institutions run by them.

A proposed new format for the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) merges it with All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) and states have been given freedom to decide on joining the common entrance exam.

Dust storm claims 15 in Pakistan

Strong dust storms lashed various parts of Pakistan Tuesday, killing at least 15 people, including five children, media reports said.

Dozens of people were injured in various incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan provinces, as rains also lashed the Punjab plains, Geo News reported.

The storms uprooted trees, signboards and electricity polls. Power supply also remained suspended in many areas.

According to Xinhua, at least seven people, including two women and a child, were killed in Peshawar and its adjoining areas.

Delhi judge refuses to summon John Abraham, says picture not obscene

Refusing to hold a nude picture of Bollywood actor John Abraham, published in a news daily as “obscene,” a Delhi court has dismissed a plea to summon him and the newspaper’s editor to answer charges of spreading vulgarity in society.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Rajneesh Kumar Gupta dismissed the plea saying that the actor’s alleged photographs were not likely to “corrupt the mind” of the readers and its purpose was merely to give the latest news about Bollywood.

US stocks UP on positive service data

US stocks gained Tuesday, with the Dow Jones industrial average snapping a four-day losing streak, as investors felt heartened after a better-than-expected service report.

When the market closed, the Dow Jones industrial average added 26.49 points, or 0.22 percent, to 12,127.95. The Standard & Poor’s 500 added 7.32 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,285.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 18.10 points, or 0.66 percent, to 2,778.11.

Oil edges up

Crude oil prices edged up after seesawing Tuesday as US service sector data came in supportive, but weak European data deepened demand concerns.

The Institute for Supply Management reported that US non-manufacturing index registered 53.7 percent in May, 0.2 percentage point higher than the 53.5 percent in April.

It was the 29th straight month of expansion, offering supports to crude markets, Xinhua reported.

Al Qaeda No 2 dead: US

Al Qaeda number two Abu Yahya al-Libi is dead, the White House said Tuesday.

The US intelligence community believe it is a “serious blow” to the Al Qaeda leadership after the death of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden over a year ago, it said.

“We have confirmation of his death,” said White House Spokesman Jay Carney during his daily press briefing, Xinhua reported.

Calling al-Libi the terror network’s “general manager”, Carney refused to confirm the location and specifics of al-Libi’s death, but said he had a range of experience that will be hard for Al Qaeda to replicate.
