Dalits seek prosecution of villagers of SRIPARRU

Andhra Pradesh Dalitha Mahasabha State executive member Nethala Ramesh Babu has demanded that the State government file a case under SC and ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act against 300 villagers of Sriparru of Eluru Mandal of West Godavari district for attacking them to vacate 300 acres of their cultivation land.

Akash missile’s Air Force version successfully test fired

India today successfully test fired its indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash missile of Air Force version from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near Balasore, the fifth trial of the anti-aircraft system in the last fortnight.

“The Air Force version of Akash missile was test-fired from the ITR. The trial was successful and met all the mission objectives,” a senior defence official said.

The anti-aircraft missile, with a strike range of 25 km and capable of carrying warhead of 60 kg, was test fired from a mobile launcher at launch complex-III of the ITR.

Newborn Baby Girl Abandoned At Bus Stop

Police in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh town are looking for parents of an infant girl who was found abandoned at a bus stand on Monday evening barely two days after her birth, officials said on Tuesday.

The child, who the police suspect was abandoned for being a girl, was on Tuesday handed over to a children’s home after she underwent treatment at a hospital.

The baby girl was found in a polythene bag near a sewerage line at Shastri Nagar junction in the town, some 250 km from here.

Floods hit Assam, over 15,000 affected

“Over 15,000 people across Assam were affected by floods triggered by incessant rains in the last two days”, officials said on Tuesday. “Water levels of major rivers, including Brahmaputra and Barak, are also rising”, they added.

At least 20 villages in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts of upper Assam have been affected by the surging waters of Pisola river, the officials said, adding that at least 10 villages were hit in Baksa and Udalguri districts of lower Assam.

Railways hike parcel rates by 25% with immediate effect

Two months after hiking the freight, railways have increased the parcel and luggage rates by 25 percent on all goods with immediate effect, in a move that is expected to add to the inflationary situation.

With the action, the railways aims to mop up Rs 370 crore as additional revenue in the current fiscal. Railways have earned Rs 1600 crore from parcel and luggage in 2011-12.

Mubarak’s health ‘severely deteriorating:’ prison sources ‎

An Egyptian security official says ousted president Hosni Mubarak’s health has deteriorated in the three days since a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in connection to the killing of protesters.

The official at Cairo’s Torah prison said that Mubarak collapsed several times today, and that he was placed on mechanical ventilation after having difficulty breathing. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to the press.

Woman killed, 200 huts gutted in fire

A 75-year-old woman was killed and around 200 huts devastated after a major fire broke out at Harbour Peta in East Godavari district, police said.

B Appayyama was charred and another woman, V Muthyalamma, was injured in the incident in Kakinada Port area when the blaze started around 2.30 PM today.

Both were taken to Kakinada Government General Hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire was not yet known, official sources said, adding that around 400 people were rendered homeless due to the fire.

Google buys Quickoffice

Google Tuesday announced that it has acquired mobile office software company Quickoffice.

“Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite,” said Google in its official blog.

Details of the acquisition were not disclosed, Xinhua reported.

Chinese firm to invest $3 bn in Russian resorts

A Chinese company will invest up to $3 billion to develop resorts in Russia’s North Caucasus region.

“Our counterparts visited the Dagestan republic and cities of Derbent, Sochi, and Arkhyz, and we have signed a nearly $3 billion investment agreement,” Akhmed Bilanov, head of Northern Caucasus Resorts which operates the tourist cluster, said Tuesday.

Bilanov added that China’s Dalian Wanda Group Corporation may also invest in projects in the Moscow and St. Petersburg regions.

ATM bombings continue unabated in South Africa

Attacks on Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have gone up rapidly in South Africa this year, with 18 cash machines being blown up in a single province, causing a loss of one million rand (about $125,000 dollars) in damages.

According to the South Africa Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), ATMs are being targetted in the Western Cape province partly due to poor policing, Xinhua reported.

Each cash machine blown up costs between 50,000 rand (around $6,250) and 300,000 rand (about $38,000) in damages, excluding any money looted, the centre said.

Waiting for evidence against Hafiz Saeed: Pakistani envoy

Even as India says that fresh evidence has been given against Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Pakistani High Commisioner Shahid Malik said Tuesday Islamabad was waiting for evidence that can be “presented in a court”.

“We need evidence (from India) against Hafiz Saeed which can be presented to a court,” Malik told reporters at the Indian Women’s Press Corps here.

He said he could say no more on the issue.
